Overview

About the property

4 Bedroom, 4.5 Bathroom, Sleeps 10

For those desiring a true Caribbean getaway vacation with easy access to the beach and exceptional privacy Smugglers Lookout should be on your short list. The villa is roomy yet intimate, has 180 degree panoramic ocean vistas but is only a few minute stroll to the beach, is luxurious for adults yet offers some of the best amenities (like our 3 story tree house) for children.

Surrounded by acres of privately held land and abutting what is slated to become Belmont National Park, Smugglers Lookout provides privacy and serenity where guests enjoy spectacular and uninterrupted panoramic sea views in a quiet surrounding where often no man-made noises can be heard.

Families with children will love our 3 story tree house complete with suspension bridge, wrap around deck, trap door, and an assortment of ropes, pulleys, and enough adventure to keep kids entertained for hours on end. Visit our “Turtle Pen” featuring our 3 red footed tortoises.

When not at the villa to find some of the BVI’s finest recreational activities and dining you won’t have to go far. The villa is situated directly across from what is slated to become Belmont National Park, is a short walk to Smugglers Cove, about ½ mile to Long Bay (great for boogie boarding and long beach walks), and about 1 mile to Cappoons Bay (Apple Bay) one of the area’s premier surf locales. Some of the finest restaurants are also among these areas with Sopers Hole just over the hill featuring a marina, shopping, and more dining.

Your villa also includes use of our “toys” including kayaks, paddle board, surfboards, boogie boards, mountain bikes and others that may not only save you a lot of money, but add to your vacation by having immediate and unlimited use of these benefits. Remember, this is also our home so we have a number of items available for use that are not listed that may not be found in a traditional rental. Make sure to call or email and we can address any specific vacation goals you might have.

This is not a high volume rental property and we are looking for families wishing to experience this magical area of the BVI who will look out after our place. No party'ers please.

About Owner/Manager

The photo shows our boys hauling in a monster lobster they spotted on a family snorkel. With no equipment on them, they engineered a snare on the beach, held their breath and dove down to catch dinner. With the exception of Dave - Carolina, John and Derek were born and raised on Tortola and we have spent time exploring the BVI with a passion. Whether discovering our secret lobster and fishing spots, to surfing little known breaks, to exploring islands and hideaway beaches, we have certainly made the most of our time in the BVI. As winners of the "How well do you know the BVI?" contest it is safe to say that we are true "locals."

We are a very active outdoorsy family and all of us have an abundant appreciation for the beauty and the activities that surround us. We have been regular participants in the local sporting scene. Among our family is a BVI national champion triathlete, a 2 time Junior National 5k champion as well as winners of local Judo, cycling, fishing, tennis, paddle boarding, and swimming events.

We have recently moved from Tortola to further our children's educational opportunities and are pleased to open our home to others who share the same appreciation for the area. We would be delighted to host you and share our decades of experience living in the BVI to help you maximize your vacation!

Owner/Manager purchased this villa in 2000

Why Owner/Manager chose Tortola

We were fortunate enough to pick our parcel of land and then construct a home to our liking. Having grown up in the BVI, we were very familiar with some of the challenges of living on an island. We wanted easy access to the beach, but did not want to be right on the beach due to hurricane surges, sand flies, and the fact that beaches are open to the public 24 hours a day. We desired a view but did not wish to have to drive to the beach. Further, we wanted to build in a high end community with great privacy that was close to some of the islands best sporting opportunities. The areas finest swimming/snorkeling, mountain biking, paddle boarding/kayaking, hiking and surfing are immediately accessible from our villa.

What makes this villa unique

This is our family's home. In fact it is the only home our children have known and now that it is available as a short term rental, there are many unique benefits.

All bedrooms have their own private balcony and bathroom. Our downstairs suite is accessed through its own entrance, has a kitchenette, living area, desk, outdoor shower and can sleep 2-5 making it ideal for a multiple family vacation.

With your rental we offer a number of our personal "toys" which could result in saving you hundreds of even thousands of dollars. Paddleboard, boogie boards, mountain bikes, surfboards, kayaks, etc. come with your stay. Perhaps better than the cost savings is simply the convenience of having these options ready to use at any time.

For kids, our three story tree house complete with suspension bridge, hatch door, covered wrap around deck, ropes, pulleys, and toys is unmatched in the BVI.

Power cuts are frequent and we have a standby generator. If power goes the generator goes on automatically so you don't have to do anything.

Rain squalls can make outdoor dining problematic, but not in our villa. Our outdoor dining patio is in the lee of the wind and under a massive covered deck allowing dining in such conditions.

With the combination of a stellar location, great accommodation, and personal touches not found elsewhere this villa is ideal for families or even multi families looking for a true Caribbean vacation experience.

Tropical Oasis overlooking Smuggler's Cove

  • 4 of 5

We just got back from staying at this beautiful house. There were seven of us – four adults and three kids. As others have said this house is incredibly well stocked with a paddleboard, kayaks, kitchen tools, etc. Marilyn- the property manager was kind and took her time to show us all around the house the first night and the owners seemed great and were fast to respond to questions. The location was fantastic and was a short walk to the best beach on Tortola. Being close to the west end it was also easy to pick up ferries to other islands.

One great thing about the house is that you can see both breathtaking sunrises and beautiful sunsets. Every morning I woke up at 5 AM and sat on the master bedroom balcony looking at the beautiful red tree right outside and listening to the birds, frogs, and roosters.

There is an iguana and turtles that live outside in a cage, and every time you turn your head you see a lizard. The owners also have two outdoor cats that live at the house. One is shy and stays away from people but the other one was absolutely awesome. My kids brought the cat inside every opportunity possible and the cat would walk us down to the beach, wait for us, and walk us back. We seriously wanted to take this cat home with us. Also, you can't see any other houses from this house so it feels very secluded and relaxing.

We really had a wonderful time in the house. The only reason I gave the house four stars instead of five was that the house does not have central air and although we could keep the bedrooms cool with window air conditioners, in August the living room and kitchen felt like it was about 95° so it could get uncomfortable. If the owners had a window AC unit in the living room it would be absolutely perfect. Again, we went in August so if you go more in high season that shouldn't be an issue.

Our favorite things we did in Tortola:

(1)Aristocats sailing/ snorkeling trip- Took us snorkeling to four different locations and The crew was amazing and it was easily the best snorkeling of my life.

(2) snorkeling and drinking at Soggy Dollar Bar (Jost Van Dyke)

(3) The baths at Virgin Gorda

(4) dinner and watching the sunset at Bananakeet

Overall, If you go to the BVI's I think you'll love this house.

Smuggler's Lookout

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a great 10 days at Smuggler's Lookout. Our family of 6, 2 adults and 4 kids ages 13, 12, 8, 6, enjoyed every minute of our stay. The views are amazing and the house had everything we needed. The kitchen is well stocked, there was a good amount of surf boards/boogie boards, kayak, and paddle board, and the kids had many adventures in the tree house! Smugglers Cove beach was great. The snorkeling right at Smugglers cove was enjoyed by all. We also enjoyed having Long Bay beach practically to ourselves. Plenty of restaurants near by, but we probably enjoyed grilling out and enjoying the deck views from the house more. We ventured out for a day sail to Norman Island and the Indians on Day Dream. The crew on Day Dream was great, the food was good, and the snorkeling was great! Dave and Carolina went out of their way to accommodate us, and we are grateful for their sharing a piece of paradise with our family.

Best villa we stayed in yet!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We’ve been to the BVI many times but this villa is BY FAR our favorite. The location is one of the best in the area as you have incredible views, privacy, yet you are only a short walk to Smugglers Cove. Not only was the villa and location fantastic, but the price was the best we found as well. With the best villa, best location, and best price we have experienced, we won’t be looking elsewhere for our future visits.

We will definitely come back to Smuggler's Lookout!

Best Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5

Everything was wonderful. The house, its unbelievable views (from every room), Smuggler's Cove...all fantastic. We loved having use of the bikes and other toys that come with the rental. The nearby beach...the most beautiful we've ever seen. Our family's goal was to disconnect from the outside world and that's exactly what we did. We didn't do much exploring (other than surfing Josiah's bay - fabulous), because our normal lives are over-regimented - and there was lots to do near the house. Outstanding. Owner Dave had lots of great tips for local dining, activities and house manager Jon was super helpful as well - he met our family at the ferry and drove us to our car rental (Jerry's) & then to the house. Even made a dinner reservation for us on our first night - nice touch! If you're looking for a true escape, look no further. Hope to return again!

While the Belmont Estate area is known for the incredible views and close proximity to some of the best beaches imaginable, very few people are aware that the area around our villa is slated to become a national park. Our villa abuts this land where there are historic ruins, an archeological dig, the largest coconut grove on Tortola, and nature hikes that are virtually unknown. Make sure to inquire about "local" secrets that reside within a quarter of a mile of our villa!
