About this property

Karkalla Historic Terrace - walk to city, cafes

Summary:
Karkalla Terrace is at the centre of all the best Hobart has to offer - walk through the laneways of historic Battery point right into the city centre, wharf, and Salamanca. It's a short stroll to Sandy Bay beach and yacht club, as well as the vibrant shopping strip and University.

Come home to a warm and welcoming terrace house with two / three bedrooms, private courtyard and sunny native gardens. Karkalla terrace is a comfortable and convenient base for couples, families or small groups

The Space:
Living spaces. The ground floor features a broad veranda with views to Kunanyi (Mt Wellington), opening into a living room with smart TV, electric fireplace and plenty of games, books and toys. The couch folds out to a comfy double bed, creating a private third bedroom if needed.

Kitchen and dining spaces. The open plan kitchen and dining includes everything you need to prepare cosy meals, including electric stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, tea & coffee and vintage and handmade ceramics and glassware.
The kitchen opens to a rear courtyard which has a striking historic hand-built sandstone wall, creating a unique private space. There is an outdoor BBQ with full gas bottle, hand crafted wooden and iron dining table as well as coffee table. Outdoor cushions and blankets are available for use in the storage container.

Sleeping space. The upper level of the terrace has the master bedroom with a handmade celery pine four-post bed, with luxurious mattress and views to the gardens. The second bedroom has a Tasmanian oak double bed with additional fold out futon, and views to the elm trees and neighbourhood. The large bathroom has a shower over a bath, washing machine and dryer, and the house hosts plenty of the extras you need like ironing board, porta-cot, highchair and child safe gates for stairways.

Working spaces. The master bedroom has a study nook with desk, chair and lamp. There is unlimited Wi-Fi, Bluetooth speaker and plenty of USB A and C charging points throughout the house.

Relaxing spaces. The grounds of Karkalla are designed for relaxation and retreat. The courtyard is growing edible, flowing and water plants. Take the iron staircase above the courtyard to a large native garden with a covered deck area, perfect for cups of tea in nature.

Karkalla is named after a local flowing native plant, also known as Pigface, that has been used by Aboriginal Australians for many centuries as a food and medicine. The plant can be found across the grounds and represents the rich history of the house and the area.
We look forward to welcoming you to Karkalla Terrace for your stay in Hobart.

The Neighborhood:
Neighbourhood highlights

Karkalla Terrace is located in a quiet, tree-lined street right on the edge of the historic Battery Point. The area is known for beautiful architecture and stonework, cottage gardens, laneways and water views.

What to do nearby:
• Walk. It's a pleasant walk to Sandy Bay shops, beaches and yacht club and casino and through Battery Point into Salamanca and Hobart City Centre.
• History. Stroll into the historic Battery point (via the roads or challenge yourself with a stair climb up Nanny goat or Billy goat lanes), transporting you back in time with beautiful architecture, churches, gardens and water views.
• Eat. There are so many incredible bakeries within a short walk – we recommend Jackman & McRoss in Battery Point, Sisterhood or Daci & Daci in Sandy Bay.
Walk into the world-famous Salamanca entertainment precinct for restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and the very popular Saturday morning markets.
• Play. A few steps more will take you to the Hobart marina where you can enjoy festivals like Taste, Winter MOFO or the finishing line of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The marina is also where you can grab delicious fish and chips (sometimes with cheeky seals) or catch a boat up the river or across the bay including over to MONA.
• Beach. Head down to the Sandy Bay beach, dog park, playground and yacht club where you can swim (if you're brave!) or walk along the harbour to Wrest Point Casio.
Visit the university of Tasmania's huge campus with water views
• Shop. Woolworths, Coles and Scoop are all located in the Sandy Bay shopping strip, as well as local bakers, butchers, salons and boutique shopping. Hill Street Grocer in Sandy Bay is also worth a visit for their free samples of local products.
• Local trips. Head up to Kunanyi (Mt Wellington) for rainforest bush walks, mountain biking, spectacular views and sometimes snow! Be sure to stop in for a rainforest hike and hot drinks at Lost Freight, at the springs, as well as the Fern Tree nature playground, mountain bike tracks, pipeline walking paths and the Fern tree tavern. MONA and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) are a great visit.
• Longer trips. Drive out of town for day trips to beautiful places like the Huon Valley, Bruny Island, Richmond or Port Arthur.

Getting Around:
• By car: Car parking is available along Quayle Street. The spots out the front and across the road of Karkalla are free and unlimited time. To the east some parking spots have a 2-hour limit during the day. Please check signs. There are many car hire companies located in Hobart or from the Airport.
• By public transport: Buses run frequently along the nearby Sandy Bay Road into Hobart, and further afield. The nearest Skybus drop off point is Brooke Street Pier. We recommend Google Maps for transport planning and live updates. Scooters for rent (Beam and Nuron) are often found in local streets. Uber and taxis also readily available
• Walking: It's a pleasant walk to Sandy Bay shops, beaches and yacht club and casino and through Battery Point into Salamanca and Hobart City Centre.
