About the property

This house offers maximum flexibility for travelers visiting Washington DC, whether you are on vacation or here for business.

Let's start with location. You can walk to the U.S. Capitol -- just two blocks away! -- the Capitol Mall, the Supreme Court, and all major Smithsonian museums. Two metro stops, historic Union Station and Capitol South, are each a 7-minute walk away, giving you rail access to the entire city. For professionals, all Congressional buildings are an easy walk, or you can metro (or taxi or Uber) into downtown.

If you are coming to DC for the cherry blossoms in March and April, the National Book Festival in September, or the Marine Corps Marathon in October, this house puts you in the center of the action. You can walk to all the festivities and easily retreat for a bathroom break and a snack.

Indeed, the house itself also offers a great deal. Cook in a fully-appointed chef's kitchen, complete with Viking six-burner range (with griddle) and a kitchen counter bar that seats four. Grill in the backyard and eat on the patio, when weather allows.

A king bed, queen bed, a single bed with trundle and a modern sofa sleeper allow eight people to sleep comfortably. A roll-away cot is available to sleep a ninth person.

The house is also extremely spacious and is great for entertaining. On many occasions, it has hosted 50+ people for parties, author appearances, fundraisers -- even a wedding!

The house is pet-friendly, with an enclosed side-yard dog run available when weather permits. The house has wifi throughout and a 46-inch television with access to Netflix and Amazon in the livingroom. There is no cable and no land-line telephone.

INTERACTION

We are available by phone and email to answer questions or help you however we can. We can be at the house if needed. But otherwise, we try to stay out of you way.

Also, our family has no political alignment, so guests can stay here without fear that they are supporting something they disagree with or creating questionable optics.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Three U.S. Senators live on this block when they are in Washington, and it's easy to see why.

Strolling here is safe, with four overlapping police jurisdictions keeping watch (Metropolitan, Capitol Police, Park Police and the Supreme Court police).

Starbucks and a myriad of restaurants are just three blocks away. You can walk to the historic Hawk 'n Dove bar, and locally famous eateries like Good Stuff burgers and We The Pizza. Stanton Park, a lovely green facility with a kiddie playground and dog park, is two blocks away.

Union Station, with a bevy of shops, can be accessed on foot. So can historic Eastern Market, which is about eight blocks away. There, you can find cheese, meat and fresh pasta vendors daily, and a farmers market with fresh produce and a boutique flea market on weekends.

Night life is close by in two separate locations, on H Street and 8th Street. You can walk to 8th Street and H Street is a short cab or Uber ride away.

GETTING AROUND

The walkability and metro access that this home offers largely eliminates the need to rent a vehicle. But if you do have a car, street parking is widely available and a large and well-lit backyard alley make loading and unloading simple (though the back gate sticks a bit). Of course, we are happy to GET YOU A PARKING PASS at no charge.

OTHER ITEMS

This house offers a unique asset to advocates and professionals who are in town for government meetings or advocacy gatherings.

It is a perfect headquarters for a fly-in or lobby day, allowing you and your staff to walk to Congressional offices. It is close enough to the Capitol to serve as a hospitality or training center. The boardroom-style dining room table can facilitate comfortable meetings, and there is a private office upstairs.

Larger entertaining such as receptions or fundraisers is also extremely comfortable in this house, with space for dozens of guests. The dining room table can be moved to become a buffet and the house is furnished with a bar. Also, the kitchen is separate from the living and dining rooms, so guests do not have to see food preparation.

Caterers will love the fully-appointed chef's kitchen, and the rear entrance to the large back alley, which will allow then to easily load in and access their trucks.

And, of course, the house sleeps eight people, so your core staff can stay in the facility.

Almost everything you want to see is walkable. Also, if you are a large family that requires two hotel rooms, this house offers huge savings. You can save on hotel bills, cook your own food and walk or train to see the city!

If you like to walk and tour, this is your place. This is an 1875 historic home, a block from the U.S. Supreme Court and two blocks from the U.S. Capitol dome. It is walkable to Union Station, Capitol South metro stop, the National Mall, many Smithsonian museums, and a great deal more.

Spacious

We stayed 6 days and found the house spacious and lovely. It was a rainy week and unfortunately, the roof leaked in the master bedroom and hallway. That was problematic and annoying and took a lot of towel use which led me to have to wash towels twice. We also had ants in the bathroom and kitchen because of the rain, all of which I'm sure the owner took care of since he had a roofer there the morning we were leaving. We needed a coffee grinder and the owner kindly dropped one off. It was

very nice kitchen and we especially enjoyed it the day we had friends over and cooked steaks out the back.

It did take a lot longer than we expected, though, to walk to most areas. While it was only a few minutes to the Supreme Court and about 10 to the Capitol, it was considerably longer to get to the museums or monuments. If you spend the money for the Hop on Hop off, that would be helpful, but with a large family it can be quite pricey. We walked 12 miles one day and couldn't figure out what bus to take to alleviate some of the walking. Parking in the city was $22-25 per day when we did it.

Although the beds were comfortable, I probably would not rent this again unless I had more people to share the cost as it ended up being $100 extra per day for taxes and fees. If you go, be sure you have checked with the owner about setting up the TV if you want to watch anything. We played games most nights .Also, if light bothers you, you may want to bring a sleeping mask for the queen bedroom as there is a lot of light coming through the window.

All in all the kids enjoyed the roominess and atmosphere of the house, especially compared to the hotel rooms we stayed in on the way home. The only thing they really missed was a pool, even though it rained most of the time we were there.The owner was very pleasant and kind and easy to communicate with.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, the severe rains caused some embarrassing problems during your stay. Again, my sincere apology -- that kind of thing is always a drag. My contractor tells me the gutters were overwhelmed by the amount of rain, water was pooling on the roof and it leaked in. Obviously, we made all necessary repairs. I did not even wait for the insurance check. We just did it. The TV is very new (maybe six weeks old?) and the instructions were in the house guide. Not sure what happened there. Next time, ask me and I'll walk you through things. The same goes for the light. There are full blinds in the queen bedroom. As for taxes, fees and parking, there's no doubt Washington is expensive and I'm afraid none of us control that. Renting a house helps. As you know, it is half the price of a hotel for a big family that needs two rooms. I will only politely disagree with one point you made: this house is about as close to the monuments, the museums and the mall as you can get in a rental home. DC is a lot of walking, no doubt. But I promise this house cut your walking down substantially over other options. Thank you for staying!

Great Host, Great Location, and Great Home

Glen was a great host - he answered all our questions in a timely fashion. Before check-in Glen emailed us a guide of instructions and a list of area things to do and eateries. This was very helpful! The house itself is as described - it's very old, but it has a lot of charm and my family really enjoyed this aspect. It's close to everything! We stayed here for a few days, some days we walked to the national mall, and other days we took Uber and the Uber prices were extremely reasonable because of the location. There are a couple things that I would like to point out: the in-house wifi is very slow so we ended up using our cellular data instead (AT&T and Verizon cell-reception in the area was very good). Also, one of bedroom doors don't close all the way (middle room with the twin-sized bed). This wasn't a problem since we left the door open anyways. There's no lock (or we couldn't figure out how to work it) in the upstairs hallway bathroom. Besides the points above, this was a great stay and I would stay here again if I was visiting. A very painless and pleasant stay.

Property is nice and within 2 blocks of the Capitol building. Quaint street with row houses but lots of room. The owner is helpful and responds quickly. Highly recommend this property.
