Accommodations:  House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 3)

We are located just outside of Cortez, Co on 34 acres with spectacular views of the Sleeping Ute Mountain to the west and a large mesa leading to Mesa Verde immediately behind us. The canal behind our property is a great place for long walks with views of Lone Cone Peak and the La Plata Mountains.

The guest house was finished in 2006 and is very bright with large windows, walnut floors and a gas fireplace. Unique items from our travels are found throughout as well as colorful textiles and local art. The kitchen is set up especially well for those who enjoy cooking and the area has very good grocery stores and a summer farmer's market. The courtyard is filled with flowers and herbs and is a wonderful place to watch sunsets and hummingbirds. We see rufous, broad tail, and black chin hummers and during the high season there are dozens around each feeder with many others swarming in the trees. Fresh fruit (apples, nectarines, apricots, cherries and plums) berries and produce are also available from our gardens in season.

This home is perfect for those who are looking for a home base while exploring the Four Corners. Wonderful day trips can be made to Telluride and on the "Million Dollar Highway" which has spectacular and unforgetable views. Durango, Canyonlands and Arches National parks are also great day trips. It is very well stocked with local guide books, brochures and maps. We have lived in the area for over 10 years and are happy to go into more depth when needed. We hope you come for a visit!

Owner's Map of Cortez

We have lived in Cortez for 13 years and have always enjoyed the amazing views and light patterns on the mesa behind us and the Sleeping Ute Mountain to the west. We finished the guest house in 2006, doing some of the work ourselves including the tiling, copper fireplace surround, fencing and landscaping (an ongoing creation!) We love to garden and the courtyard and surrounding gardens are filled with bloom from April through October. We are originally from Virginia and have traveled and/or worked in a variety of countries including Korea and China, The Central African Republic and Haiti so you will find an eclectic and interesting assortment of items from these areas. The Four Corners is an amazing home base location for exploration of ancient Anasazi Indian ruins, hiking, Canyonlands and Moab as well as Durango and Telluride. We are more than happy to answer questions about things to do and travel times and think the house is a great way to share the beauty of our area. Come and see it for yourself! • Dates stayed: 9/26/09 to 10/06/09 Highly Recommended! We have been home a little over a week, and are still rhapsodizing about our stay in Cortez! The Brunk Guest House is perfect for one or two people. There are lots of windows and the view from each is special (provide lots of photo ops, too). We sat in the garden several evenings, enjoying a glass of wine, music (we took an iPod with speakers), the hummingbirds and cats. We were only able to cook on the grill one evening, as either the winds were too strong or it was, wonder of wonders, raining. The Guest House is also perfect in its location. Just the right jumping-off point for Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, the Anasizi Heritage Center, Lowry Pueblo, Ute Mountain Tribal Park and Telluride. We enjoyed outings to each of these, and also went to the Salmon Museum in Bloomfield, met with a guide and toured the Chaco Canyon ruins. This was an overnight trip, but the Guest House was a welcome sight upon our return. The Brunks are wonderful hosts, providing information and assistance whenever needed. Cortez is a lovely town and all the people we met were also helpful and welcoming. We hope to spend more time in the Brunk Guest House – and we hope you do, too.

    • After two visits, we are beginning to think of the Brunk Guest House as our home away from home. Becky and Don are great folks and wonderful hosts, and they have thought of everything to make their guests' stay a memorable experience. The decor, views, flowers, and hummingbirds all make this place special. Plus the one thing no other guesthouse could have...Kanga (the dog)to take you for a walk along the canal. So much fun! Highly recommended.

    • It has been almost two months since we stayed at the Brunk Guest House and it still remains ever present in my mind. The house couldn't have been more perfect with all of the personal touches thru out, could have stayed a week and not made a dent in the wonderful library. I may even steal a decorating idea or two from the house. Our hosts were utterly delightful and gracious; they went above and beyond to enhance our stay in anyway possible. Would love to come back - don't miss the opportunity if you are visiting in the area. Lisbeth

    • My husband and I have sampled furnished rentals in many different places, and the Brunk Guesthouse is our best experience ever! The house is light, spacious and luxuriously furnished. We stayed a week and enjoyed ample activities in the Cortez area. I would definitely recommend this property!

    • What a wonderful stay I had in the Brunk Guest House, in a luxurious, cozy place, great kitchen, and surrounded by 100 hummingbirds it the garden. Becky and Don were very friendly and helpful. The location is great, both near desert and mountain places. I am a singer-songwriter, and am now working on a song about hummingbirds!

    • This is an enchanting place to stay! Becky and Don (as well as the kids and even the animals!) are delightful, and have thought of everything to make this a lovely and welcoming place, down to the tiniest details. We truly hated to leave, but we definitely plan to come back here! Thanks again!

    • We could not have been happier with our stay at the Brunk guesthouse. Becky and Don have thought of everything to make their guests feel welcome and taken care of, while still offering them as much privacy as they desire. The cozy cottage is beautifully decorated and the thoughtful touches, such as home made jam and a bookshelf full of reading materials, made us feel comfortable and pampered immediately. We loved the gorgeous views from every window, the locally made art objects, the secluded garden, the hummingbirds and the great movie collection. There is so much to see and do in this area, we only wish we could have stayed much longer. We are so grateful that the Brunks created such a lovely guest house to share with us.

    • The pictures do not do justice to this place. From the dogs greeting you at arrival,to the hummingbirds, the flowers, the scenary, the decorating, the ambiance -- incredible. All with home made jelly! And a most comfortable bed. We have highly recommended this place to all our friends. Outstanding and cheaper than a motel. The Brunks and children are wonderful hosts who make you feel special and right at home. And with all there is to do here, what could be better. Be sure to ask Don or Becky about John Sutton's wines! Another plus.

The Brunk Guest House is an exquisite, well thought out place to stay; ideal for a couple who want to rest, enjoy cooking dinner in the well equipped galley kitchen, and possibly visit, as we did, the Mesa Verde National Park. Everything that could be needed has been thought of; there's a secluded garden to sit out in and a comfortable living area from whence to sit and watch the sunset on the Ute Mountain or watch TV.
