Named 'Ultimate Beach' in Feb. '08 Travel Magazine
- Minimum stay:3 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Stay on the only Bahamas strand picked as an 'Ultimate Walk-Forever Beach' in the Feb. '08 Caribbean Travel & Life magazine. Poponi Beach Cottage is on the historic two-acre Poponi property, where gently rolling grounds -- filled with coconut palms, bougainvillea, hibiscus and jasmine -- slope to the sparkling turquoise Atlantic. No steep stairs or rocky entrance at this pink-sand beach. Read or nap in the waterside hammock, lounges or shady cabana. Snorkel above the coral heads right off the beach. Or shed your shoes and meander for miles at low tide.
Lodging is a spacious 2nd floor efficiency above a garage. It has an open floor plan, with sleeping, dining and sitting areas, nicely outfitted kitchen and full bath. Queen-sized bed with designer linens. Flat-screen TV with broadband cable. Internet access. Air conditioning plus a ceiling fan. Large deck with lounges, table and gas grill. 2nd enclosed shower outdoors.
Ideal getaway spot: If you want to spend your vacation gambling in casinos, shopping at outlet malls or jet-skiing, Eleuthera is not the island for you. But if you enjoy reading, napping on a beachside lounge underneath a whispering Casuarina tree, walking miles on a pink-sand beach (often without seeing another soul), this is paradise. The island is safe, the Bahamian people are friendly and the island's beaches are unsurpassed. Poponi's beach was only one of two in the Bahamas -- and one of only 20 in the Caribbean -- picked as an 'ultimate' beach in the February 2008 cover story of Caribbean Travel & Life magazine. It was one of five in the Caribbean named as an 'ultimate walk-forever beach.' Come see for yourself! The grounds and water views are so lovely that Poponi is often used as the site for wedding photos.

My wife and I met Dave in 2005 during our first trip to Eleuthera. After two weeks on the island, we visited his house to say goodbye as were heading home. He said he was going to build a cottage and we should contact him if we came back. So we did. We arranged in advance for a car at GHB airport, a Chevy Tracker 'jeep'. We think a car like this is a must for getting around on the island. We stopped for groceries and beer then drove to Poponi. Dave heard us drive up, greeted us and got us situated. We didn't see him again for a few days. We were feeling a little guilty, like we were ignoring him, but he was just staying out of the way, giving us privacy, attending to his own activities. He was right there, though, when I knocked on his door. He knew we had been to the island before and already knew a lot of the places to go. We did spend one night catching up at Tippy's. We spent several days revisiting favorite beaches and exploring a few new ones. The old navy base, Club Med, Rock Sound Club and Cotton Bay Club properties are fun to explore if you're into imagining what they might have been like in their heyday. I mentioned to Dave that this trip we found ourselves, while out on excursions saying, let's go back to 'our' beach. There are many great beaches on Eleuthera and we wanted to see them again, but Poponi Beach is one of them too, and it has a hammock, lounges, refrigerator, beer, etc. Poponi Beach itself is a great beach. We did see some people who came for the day but if you see 4 other people on a mile of pink sand beach, is that crowded? The cottage was very comfortable. There is plenty of room, the kitchen is well equipped, cable TV (we never used), and high speed Internet. I admit I did bring the iPad and the Internet really is fast (fiber to the house). I did not read work email, though; you have to draw a line. The patio is situated to the East, so it is shaded in the afternoon -- a great place to sit out and watch the ocean. One of my favorite places in the afternoon was the cabana. A nice shady place down by the water with a steady breeze to take a break from the sun and read a book or listen to the iPod. The cottage is not on the water but it is only a short walk (a couple hundred feet). As I look at the photos in the listing I see that they are accurate and I miss the place. We're glad we reconnected with Dave and stayed at the cottage. We'd do it again. Rich and Barb Seattle, WADid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Upon arrival to Eleuthera airport, our host Dave picked us up and took us on a tour of the town pointing out the highlights, but also taking us grocery shopping and to the liquor store so we were fully stocked for our 4 days. The cottage was bright and inviting, very clean and had all the amenities you needed for your stay. On the beach it was very hot when the sun shone done but we had our breezy days as well. During our days there, we probably saw about 6 or 7 people on the beach - if you want privacy, this is it! The water is also completely clear and sandy, absolutely perfect for swimming. If the sun is too hot on the beach, there is a cabana with shade - a great spot to share a bottle of wine at night and have a gorgeous view of the stars and moon. Highlights of our time in Eleuthera: * The glass bridge - it is a great spot to pull over and see where the two oceans meet *Harbour island - I think this is an absolute must! Drive to the north point of Eleuthera and take a water taxi across. Be sure to rent a golf cart to explore the island. The beaches are absolutely pristine and it is so much fun driving around on the golf cart!!! *Tippy's - everyone says that you must go here. I thought how great could it actually be? It must have been one of the BEST meals I have had in my life! The drinks are strong, the menu is delicious and they take credit cards (which is rare on the island)!!! This was our splurge on the last night and was well worth it. *Spending time at Poponi beach - my boyfriend and I mapped out different beaches to go to. Aside from Harbour island, none of the other beaches we went to compared to Poponi - don't waste your time trying to find other beaches when the best one is right at your doorstep. I have to be honest that we were hesitant to chose Poponi since there were few recent reviews and didn't know what to expect. What we found far exceeded any of my expectations and I can assure you that no one cares more about you having a good time than your hosts Dave and Kay! Their hospitality and generosity was very genuine and they ensured you you had everything you needed. I would say that this is the perfect spot for couples who want to relax and get away from the busy city, it is very laid back. Dave and Kay - thanks for sharing your little piece of heaven! We hope to return in the near future. Many thanks, Meghan & Ryan Toronto, CanadaDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My boyfriend and I stayed at Poponi for 4 nights in March 2013. It is a truly wonderful place-- the grounds are beautifully landscaped, with native plants and green grass that leads right up to one of the best beaches on the island. It's secluded with plenty of privacy, so you really feel like you are away from it all. Dave and Kay are the best hosts-- always very helpful and accommodating. Dave even helped me find a flight from Nassau to Eleuthera when I thought we were stuck! The property is conveniently located within a half hour drive of Governor's Habor airport, and a 10-15 minute drive from some of the best restaurants on the island (Tippy's and The Beach house)-- which is very useful because good food is pretty hard to come by in Eleuthera. The cottage itself is very clean and comfortable-- fully equipped kitchen, sitting and dining area, cable television and wifi, porch with lounge chairs and grill. It's adorably decorated and, even though it's one room, I found it to be spacious, open, and airy. They even have plenty of snorkling equipment for you to borrow and a cooler to bring some cold drinks to the beach. I highly recommend Poponi to anyone interested in visiting Eleuthera!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My husband and I stayed at Poponi cottage in April 2010. We spent 8 days there and it was picture-perfect! The cottage is well equipped, with all the dishes, pots, pans, towels, and beach stuff we could ever need. Poponi beach is magnficent - with gorgeous pink sand and a wonderful breeze. It was great for snorkeling, swimming, walking, or just laying around on the beach chairs conveniently located seaside. Dave was a charming, informative and gracious host. He gave us good tips of fishing sites, restaurants and things to do. The funny thing was, we hardly ever saw him, but he was always there if we needed him. North palmetto point is very central, and we had many 1/2 day trips to various spots on the island. Dave has provided a wonderful collection of tips/maps, and we highly recommend the Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera book - as we would never have found some incredible spots without the book. The people of Eleuthera were very friendly, and we will recommend this wonderful island (and Poponi cottage) to anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable vacation.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2002
About the owner: We're retired U.S. journalists who fell in love with Eleuthera after visiting Provo, Grand Turk, Dominica, Granada, Belize, Tortola , Cat Island and Andros. We vacationed here only once before knowing this was where we wanted to retire. We bought 2.5 acres of Atlantic beachfront property and renovated the main house over 7 years. We built the guest cottage in 2007. We now divide our time between Eleuthera and Charleston, S.C., but Eleuthera warms our souls. We value our guests' privacy while being available for advice or help.
Why the Owner Chose North Palmetto Point:
Poponi is an historic property, on one of Eleuthera's most beautiful beaches, with easy access to the turquoise Atlantic -- no cliffs, steps or ladders. The beach provides sun and valuable shade, with no rocky entry. The quiet, lushly landscaped property is centrally located, near airports, groceries and restaurants. Only one house visible for a half-mile, and most often you'll have the beach to yourselves.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Poponi, and its guest cottage, sit on one of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches, with miles-long stretches of white and pink sand and few beachgoers. On July 4th, we were in the ocean and could not see another human, in any direction. Compare that to July 4th on most U.S. beaches! The property is quiet and secluded, while providing cable TV and free wi-fi.
