Four of us headed to the Carson River House for a long weekend. We had a fabulous time. The house is well appointed, expecially the living room with nice chairs and a gas fireplace. Although the guest house is near the main house you would never know it. The Merrills are the perfect hosts. Lots of information but no intrusion. We were really close to lots of great hikes and some fun flyfishing on the East Fork of the Carson. The house also sits on the West Fork, which is pretty and sounds nice from the house. Our two dogs came with us and had an absolute blast! There is so much to do there, rain or shine that you can't go wrong. We even made some great meals in the minimalist kitchen. The only draw back of the house is that the kitchen has very little counter space so you end up using the table and then have to eat in the livingroom, but we managed just fine.(it wasn't warm enough to eat outside when we were there, but there is a nice table by the river). Also the BBQ is big and nice. Over all a great choice when in the area.

My husband, small dog and I had such a terrific time at Kathy and Jack's cottage. We were in search of fall foliage and we weren't disappointed! All of the Carson river canyon and Hope Valley have amazing Aspens. Their cottage is cozy and very comfortable. We loved sitting in front of the gas fireplace. The location is excellent as you feel away from it all but can still get in to Markleeville in 10 minutes. We loved our meal at Stone Fly there- what a lovely restaurant for such a small town! We were so glad we could bring our dog with us too! We all enjoyed walking by the river and the high sierra hikes were amazing. We will definitely be back!! Thanks again-WEndy & Ivan (San Francisco)

Our stay at the Robins Nest was a delightful experience. The house was welcoming and comfortable; the location on the river was relaxing. We could walk to some great fishing! Our host was more than hospitable-he shared tales of his family, his dog, local history, and more. The scenery was breathtaking, and the location was ideal. It is tucked back from the highway, so you are surrounded by nature. All in all, a great place to stay that I would recommend highly.

The Guest House is perfectly situated alongside the river and surrounded by stunning views of the Carson Pass. It's a very peaceful location which, combined with the comfortable amenities, made for a wonderfully relaxing stay. Jack and Kathy were extremely helpful but never intrusive and their thoughtful gift of fresh trout from the river one afternoon was one of the highlights of our vacation. We grilled outside every night under the spectacular canopy of stars, cozying up to the wood fire and listening to the river burbling past. It doesn't get much better than that!

This could not have been better! The Merills have put together a beautiful guest house on an amazing piece of property. The views from the front and backyard are breath taking. The Carson River runs directly in the back of the property and you can here it flow all day long. We woke up each morning, made breakfast and sat in the back to watch the sun glow on the mountain right in front of us with the sound of the Carson the background. The guest house has all the comforts of home. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need. The main room is very comfortable with a fireplace. it is the perfect place to relax after the day. We spent one evening eating out and went into Markleeville and ate at Stonefly. If you get the chance make sure you check it out. As far as activities are concerned there are many. Hiking, biking, and fishing are at your fingertips. If you are a fisherman ask Jack, the owner, to take you out to his favorite fishing spot. You will not be disappointed! We had are fill of lake trout after we got back! Last but not least make sure you get a chance to meet Willie, the Merrill's dog! We can't wait to make it back!

My husband and I celebrated our 8th anniversary here and it was lovely. We appreciated coming home to a hot shower and a comfortable bed after long day hikes and time spent in the beautiful mountains. It rained the second afternoon we were there, so we were grateful for a dry place to stay (and not being in a tent!) The only thing preventing me from giving it 5 stars is that the kitchen was a bit sparse. I had wished there was a way to boil water for tea (an electric kettle would have solved the problem), though we ended up just using the coffee pot (without coffee in it). It was functional for cooking a couple of meals but quite minimal. We love to cook, so maybe our standards for kitchens are higher than for others. I'm not complaining. The hosts were lovely and unobtrusive. A fantastic get-away location! I would definitely recommend it to others.

This cottage is well-designed, tastefully furnished and very clean. The kitchen is well equipped, and the outdoor areas are superb. We particularly enjoyed the big gas grill on the back terrace by the river. The owners were very helpful and accommodating. We went for hiking in the Sierras, and the area did not disappoint. We hope to make it back, maybe in the winter this time?

My parents were visiting from out of town, and I wanted to get my dad somewhere where he could fish. I couldn't have asked for a better spot. It is beautiful, ideally located, and the owners are incredibly hospitable. There are some awesome bike rides and hiking cose by. We will go back!

You can hear the west Carson river which runs right next to the guest house. Need I say more? The guest house is beautiful. It's right next to main house but the Merrill's are seriously the nicest, relaxed folks, made us feel so at home and welcome...Even thought we had four dogs (one a St Bernard) which got along great with their cute dog. We will definitely return.

We had a wonderful time spending Memorial Weekend at the Merrill's guest house. The house fit our family of 5 perfectly. The kids (10,13,14) climbed the mountain behind the house 5x, played in the river and rode bikes around the property. My husband, a fly fisherman, spent every morning and evening fishing nearby hot spots and I spent 3 days sitting by the river reading a book. It was a wonderful, much needed break from our crazy life. The cabin is beautifully decorated and well appointed with all necessities and many extras. The washer and dryer and dishwasher were an added bonus. Though the days were warm, the evenings had a little chill and we spent our nights in front of the gas fireplace playing cards. There was an abundance of towels and linens and even a hair dryer, (great bonus since I forgot mine.) The kids loved seeing all the wild life and beautiful birds. There are many reservoirs and lakes near by, as well as hiking and hot springs. It was also convenient to several small restaurants and market. We had a wonderful time and look forward to our next stay. Maybe when there's snow on the ground and we can try the sledding hill.

About the owner: We are both semi-retired. Moved up to Woodfords in December 2008. You will enjoy the serenity of our Guest House on the river.

Why the Owner Chose Hope Valley:
We have been coming up here for 35 years. We love the peacefulness and tranquility of the area. The property has been in the Merrill Family for over 150 years.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Woodfords has everything or very close to everything in sporting. We are within 30 minutes of Kirkwood and Heavenly Valley, California and Nevada. River, stream and lake fishing is every direction you turn. Golfing & Disc Golfing a short drive away. World class rock climbing, cycling and hiking is right in your backyard. Extremely dark nights provide great stargazing. You name it, it's here.
