It's been six months since our stay at the Salt Marsh Studio, and we're still talking about it! We have used VRBO several times with great success, but our stay at the Salt Marsh Studio exceeded our expectations. The studio, the serene location, and our lovely hosts, Bob and Ilsa, were all perfect. Ilsa has thought of everything. The home is well stocked, comfortable and inviting. The only downside was the day we had to leave! Looking forward to another stay.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

In all of our years renting through VRBO, we have not run across hosts as gracious as Bob and Ilsa. Their attention to detail--ground coffee , milk in the refrigerator, maps, and suggestions for places to eat or see--made our stay that much more enjoyable. The house is lovely and unique. If you are looking for quiet, you can just relax on the dock looking out at the river. If you want activity, the location is very central---convenient to beaches, museums, historical sites, shopping, hiking--much more than we could see in one week. Simply put--a great place!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had the opportunity to spend a week at Ilsa and Bob's chic studio. The studio was spacious, comfortable, and had many of the ammenties of home such as: fully stocked kitchen, computer with internet access, and cable tv. Also, the studio was located on the scenic Patchogue River with a lovely dock for guests to enjoy nature. In addition, the location was perfect for traveling to tourist attractions in Southeastern Connecticut and New York. Illsa and Bob was gracious hosts. They offered suggestions for dining, shopping, and touring the area. We would highly recommend this studio for individuals wanting privacy in a cozy studio.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had a great stay at this property. This house is a carriage house adjacent to your hosts home on a large property that is really a small compound of sorts. It is surrounded by beautiful stone work and adorned with the owners own sculpture work, truly a whimsical setting for this bight, calming and airy house. To call it a studio is an understatement. We took day trips in and out every day, cycled a bit (great riding in the area) and did some surfcasting for striped bass. Each night ended the same, with great local meals and a late night glass of wine on the private dock by the salt marsh. If we had more time we definitely would have stayed in one night and cooked some seafood from any of the numerous local markets.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The term "guest house" doesn't do justice to this stunning, fully loaded and airy house. Gorgeous setting and views and design elements that you've never seen before. Bob and Ilsa are lovely hosts & knowledgeable about the area (which features, BTW, the justifiably famous Lobster Landing lobster shack in nearby Clinton). Strongly recommend!! PS, this is definitely for grownups; don't really recommend for kids.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Salt Marsh House this past May. Bob and Ilsa were the perfect hosts, supplying us with plenty of details and info (easy to follow directions, restaurant suggestions, etc) to make our stay perfect. They couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. And the house is a real wonder - architecturally amazing and full of great art, perfectly appointed for travelers, and in an amazing setting. The property is beautiful and the river dock is a perfectly relaxing place to hang out, take in the wildlife (Ospreys, Mallards, Egrets, etc.), read or just enjoy the sun & views. And Westbrook and its immediate surrounds offered us plenty to do, see and eat during our visit when we actually felt like leaving the house…. Which I will admit took some motivation. Enjoy!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

About the owner: Bob and I lived in Chelsea and worked in Manhattan when we became weekenders in Westbrook. Bob, an architect and sculptor, designed and built an artist's studio for himself which was completed in 2003. Since retiring and moving to Westbrook year round, we rebuilt the main house while we lived in the studio. It was such a unique experience that we decided to share the studio with guests during the warmer months of the year (May - November). It's been great fun for us, and we have enjoyed sharing it with visitors from all over the world. Our visitors have enriched our lives as well as theirs!
Why the Owner Chose Westbrook:
We were looking for a location on a salt marsh where 'life begins'. The five acres provided a place where Bob could pursue his passion for sculpting outdoors and Ilsa, an avid cook, could pursue her passion and grow our own produce. The site provided space for almost everything that we could dream of. We built a 75' by 5' raised bed vegetable garden and an artist's studio. An open meadow is the home of sculptures and wildflowers. This is truly a place to live with nature...but we do miss Manhattan!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
'It's just one of a kind'!
