Le Grindoux is a three hundred-year-old farmhouse that has been completely renovated into a cozy, four-bedroom, two-bath family home.
Sitting on top of a hill on the department road just outside of town, it has expansive views over the surrounding countryside while being quite convenient for your morning croissant and newspaper run.
Have your morning coffee on the patio and watch the sun rise over the fields (which might be filled with sunflowers!)
Pick up lunch at a village farmer’s market: locally-made aperitifs and wines, foie gras, truffles, fraises des bois, tomates de Marmande, or charcuterie from one of the very good butchers in town.
You'll see why the French have a saying about the region: “on mange bien là bas,” ("one eats well there.")
Explore the sights of the Dordogne and the Lot-et-Garonne: chateaux of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Edward the Black Prince, Henry IV of France, and Josephine Baker and the prehistoric caves of Font De Gaume and Lascaux.
Enjoy the beautiful countryside: ride bikes on the country roads (if you’re lucky, the Tour de France will swing nearby), take walks on the randonnées (pilgrim paths) that criss-cross the area, visit family farms and sit down to a meal with the farmer’s family at a ferme auberge, swim at the Castillonnès pool, or play tennis at the town courts. There are also river boat rides, ornamental gardens, horseback riding, golf–lots of outdoor activities to keep you busy.
Return to the patio for your evening meal and watch the sun set over the village while you sip a locally-made Armagnac. Then spend the rest of the evening in front of a fire in the original fireplace.
You will sleep well at Le Grindoux: all of the bedrooms have American queen-sized beds.
One bedroom is quite large and also contains two twin beds, and downstairs off the salon is the smallest–perfect for one, but possible for a couple. There are skylights in the upstairs bedrooms.
There is a split bath (WC and shower room) on each floor (total of 2). It is ideal for families with school-age children, or couples sharing a vacation.
The pleasures of country life in southwest France await you!

Our family of 10, 6 adults and 4 children, stayed at Le Grindoux in June, 2011. We couldn't recommend it more. Ideally located in the heart of the Dordogne, there is a range of nearby sites and activities for all ages: chateaux, farms, lakes, wineries and wonderful village markets where one can find an array of gourmet foods to take home for the evening meal. You can rely on the accurate description of the property; it is as ever pleasant and comfortible as it appears in the pictures, and the owners and the their local representative couldn't be more helpful in providing suggestions, information, and even a stocked kitchen upon request.

Charming house, comfortable, clean and well-appointed - good beds and good bathrooms! - lovely patio w/beautiful view & easily workable bbq - very close to the town of Castillones which has 3 excellent restaurants at which we ate, Le Marechalerie, Les Remparts Hotel restaurant and Le Gourmet - also good grocery store and wonderful market day on Tuesdays in Casti - easy drive to many other bastide towns in area and several chateaux - only minor problem was that washer/dryer needs better instructions to go with it - otherwise a marvelous rental and would & have recommended it to friends

We loved our time at Le Grindoux. We are a family of 4 with 2 very active boys aged 11 and 8 and arrived at Le Grindoux after a 27 hour flight from Australia to the UK, a night in each of London and Bordeaux and a drive from Bordeaux getting used to driving on the RHS of the road! Needless to say we were over the moon when we arrived and saw that the house was just as the photos depicted (without the use of wide angle lenses etc..) and just as described. The house was immaculate and the welcome pack of wines, fresh bread, foie gras, jam, cheeses, fresh fruit, ham was perfect. The information pack provided us with many great leads on where to go and what to do. We tried out the local restaurants, Casti Pizza (great thin based wood fired pizzas), made friends with the locals at the Bar where we had our morning coffee and evening aperitif, went to the local markets and cooked BBQs at the house, ate copius amounts of bread, cheeses, fresh salads dressed with walnut oil, fresh fruits (the cherries in particular) all washed down with local wines. The boys loved the space in the yard and kicked footballs around. We rode the bikes along the quiet roads nearby, walked in the early mornings, swam at the local pool, raided the boookshelves for the many books on France and soaked up the sun in the courtyard which seems perfectly positioned to capture morning and afternoon (and evening at that time of year) sun. This is a truly beautiful part of France. The owners were very helpful answering all of our questions before the trip making sure we were looked after during our stay. We have no hesitation in recommending the house to family and friends and are already planning ways in which we may return to Castillones and stay again at Le Grindoux.

My husband and I, along with 3 friends, had the most enjoyable stay at Le Grindoux mid-April. This charming, rustic and very clean farmhouse is in a superb location for exploring the French countryside. Each day brought a new adventure as we explored the area visiting wineries, the “beaux villages”, chateaus, prehistoric cave paintings, and the daily farmers markets of the neighboring villages. The rates were so affordable too! Whether you want to explore by car or cycling (all the roads are paved) I highly recommend Le Grindoux for a vacation that is both full of delights and relaxing at the same time. We can’t wait to go back.

We were lucky enough to stay at Le Grindoux in June of 2008, and had a wonderful time. My husband and I were travelling with 2 older teenagers, so you never know how your accommodation decisions are going to be received. The house is done with particular style, while allowing for every comfort. The area is beautiful, with caves and a winery nearby. Needless to say, everyone was very well pleased, and we are anticipating our next stay! Liz and Matt Howitt San Francisco, California
