Unique Handmade Log Cabin, Lots of Amenities, Quiet Lake
- Minimum stay:2-7 nights

Buckhorn Lake Cabin is a beautiful, new log cabin built by my husband, and surrounded by pine trees and large wrap-around deck with view of Buckhorn Lake, a quiet, no-wake lake. The cabin is officially designated a no-stress zone. So grab some floats and tubes and jump into the lake, sunbathe, read on the deck, play music and board games in front of the stone fireplace, relax by the fire pit and roast some marshmallows, ice fish, or take a walk and look at the stars or the wildlife. We are located on Doe Lane for a reason! Deer, turkeys, cute chipmunks and red squirrels, blue herons, eagles and many other birds and animals visit.
There are loads of recreational activities available during all four seasons without ever having to get into your car. Just walk out the front door. Buckhorn Lake is connected to a canal, linked to other lakes and the Black River. You can canoe, kayak, swim, fish, bike and cross country ski or snowshoe for hours without ever having to get in your car. So throw your car keys away for a while and technology (if you can) and get to know your spouse, family and/or friends or even yourself better.
If you want to venture out, one mile away is Lake Arbutus, an 839-acre lake with boat and jet-ski rentals, boat ramps, picnic areas, beaches and playgrounds and an old-fashion roller skating ring. Discover some special treasures at a fun flea market, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend plus the first weekend in August. Local wineries and antique stores.
We are close to thousands of acres of public land known for great whitetail deer and turkey hunting. Outstanding mountain bike, cross-country ski, snow shoeing and hiking trails are approximately 5 miles away at Levis Trow Mound. There’s also Bruce Mound Winter Recreation Area which offers snow tubing, snow-boarding and downhill skiing only 15 minutes away.
The Black River is an excellent river for leisure and white water canoing , kayaking, tubing, and fishing. Wazee Lake, is 20 minutes away. It’s a spring fed lake with the clearest water you can imagine and is Wisconsin's deepest inland lake, and a prime location for scuba diving, trout fishing, and swimming.
There are plenty of indoor activities as well. Majestic Pines Casino is nearby, as is a movie theater and antiquing in Black River Falls along with many other local attractions, fairs restaurants and shopping. Three Bears indoor and outdoor water park is only a half hour away.
Buckhorn Lake cabin is perfect for a romantic weekend, family get-togethers, reunions and women retreats and male-get-a-ways. Or come for a solo retreat and stoke-up your batteries while you unplug.
Come relax, play, sleep and enjoy!

We had a truly wonderful 5 day vacation here. Everyone had their own room to sleep in and lots of private space for my college aged son and his friend who came on the train from Minneapolis. We picked them up in Tomah, just 45 minutes from the cabin. We cross country skied from the cabin on 10 inches of fresh snow. A REALLY nice kitchen. Every aspect of the cabin was as described in the website. Beds very comfortable. The cabin was well stocked with board games and books and I loved that there was no TV! Leah was incredibly helpful will all of my questions before and during our stay. We will go back again for spring break and bring more friends next time!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.

I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a location for a small family party. Our group was made up of three couples and a 6 year old, and there was plenty of space for all. There is plenty of cookware and appliances in the kitchen for those who prefer cooking to dining out - but the local community is within walking distance, and offers many restaurants as well. There is great access to outdoor activities like hiking and fishing, and plenty options if the weather doesn't cooperate.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The cabin was as described, very pleasant and quaint. We had a great time in spite of the late spring snow. Although frozen when we were there, the pond across the street was very niceOwner response: We are glad you and your family had a great time. It is too bad you were not able to explore more of Buckhorn Lake. It is actually thirty acres, larger than a pond. The lake is shaped like a buck's horn. Our cabin is at one end of the "horn." Our lake is also connected to a long canal which is connected to another lake. The Black River is parallel to the canal too. It's nice to be able to explore this extensive water system from the cabin. Leah

My family and I decided to get away for the weekend and found this cabin on flipkey. Leah, the owner, was very accommodating to our request on such a short notice. She even called us on our way up there to let us know that there was a lot of snow and we may want to purchase boots at the local Walmart if we hadn't brought any. It was so nice of her to inform us so we could be prepared. The cabin had everything we needed. We played many board games, enjoyed the beautiful fireplace, went hiking and walked on the iced covered lake. My family and I had a wonderful bonding mini-vacation. Even though it was cold and rainy when we went, we still had an amazing time. I would definately recommend staying in this cabin. Not only is the cabin beautifully maintained, but the owner is extremely nice.Owner response: We were so impressed with how conscientiousness you were. You even told us about a broken corn cob holder and ping pong paddle. When guests let us know if anything is not working or broken, it really helps us. We can more quickly replace broken items and my husband can bring up the correct tools to fix something, next time we come up to the cabin.Thank-you. We hope you can come back for a longer stay next time. Leah

My family had a great weekend at the Buckhorn Lake Cabin to celebrate my dad's retirement. The cabin itself was beautiful and very comfortable, and we especially enjoyed the wood fireplace. It was a great weekend to get away and have some time to enjoy the outdoors, talk as a family, and have fun together. We also took the opportunity to go cross-country skiing at the nearby Levis Mound Ski Trails. These trails were extremely well-maintained and a beautiful place to ski. The only drawback to the cabin that we could see was the smell of the water, which other people have also noted. With that exception, this was a fantastic place to stay, and we had a great weekend.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

the cabin was nice, the sleeping accomadations were not. there were not 4 bedrooms. there were 3 with an open loft which had a trundle bed that we had to put on the floor. 1 bedroom had a bunk bed with a full on bottom and a twin on top that had to be brought down to the floor to sleep on. this cabin is perfect for a family with young kids who do not care where they sleep. as we get older in our years beds are very important to us and to have to sleep on the floor is not what we expected. the only other thing is the well water was very stinky, rotten egg smell.Recommended for: Families with young children.
Owner response: Oh my… 36 wonderful reviews and hundreds more outstanding reviews in our guest book; positive feedback that made our heart swell, and now your surprising comments. We were confused as to why you had to sleep on the floor. As we have written in our description, we have a master bedroom with a queen sized bed, and a futon in the living room that folds out into another queen sized bed on the first floor, a trundle bed which is a single sized bed and a roll out single bed in the loft. The lower floor has another master bedroom with another queen sized bed, and another bedroom which has a bunk bed which has a full sized bed on the lower, and a single in the upper. That makes a total of 3 queen sized, 1 full, and 3 single beds, allowing up to 11 people to sleep comfortably. People have told us many times that they slept so well in our home, and left so rested. The water is also mentioned in our listing, and in our instructions to people we stress that it has been tested and is healthy. There is a sulfur odor, but we supply some drinking water, and encourage our guests to bring extra drinking water. Despite the sulfur smell, bathing in our water is a plus because it makes your skin so soft. Vacationers spend loads of money staying at sulfur springs resorts because sulfur water is so good for your skin. We like to think that the water is an added value :) Staying in a log cabin is perhaps not for everyone, but it makes my wife’s and my blood pressure go down just being up there, and looking at the 10” log posts, beams and purlins, and the beautiful cathedral ceiling and woodwork. Good luck in your future vacations. For those of you considering staying at our cabin, we have supplied photographs of every bed in every room in the cabin. We have also described the beds in each room. Meeting and hopefully exceeding your expectations are two important goals of ours. If any information in our listing is not clear, please give us a call. Leah and Tim

This cabin is great - lots of supplies available in the kitchen. With the basement and the pingpong table, it gave the great a way to split up so we all were not crammed into one room for the weekend. A disadvantage was that our group all went to bed at different times and the cabin didn't offer much sound proofing so those who went to bed early didn't get as much sleep as they wanted. We struggled with wet wood so I recommend bringing a starter log for the fireplace. We had a hard time finding starter logs as we checked at local shops.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway.
Owner response: We are glad you had a great time. You had six adults and a 16, 15, 14 and two twelve year olds staying at the cabin. I'm not surprised bedtime was a little chaotic. The ten inch logs does an amazing job of insulating sound from the outside. We have insulation in the walls and ceilings, but the open and airy floor plan can carry noice. Starter wood is in a basket next to the fireplace, and kindling and dry wood is also next to the fireplace, with more dry wood in the shed to the right of the cabin facing the lake. The wood on the deck can get wet from the snow. Leah The cabin is so much fun in the winter for people of all ages with ice fishing, ice skating, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing right out your front door, and down hill skiing, and tubing a few minutes away.

My friends and I wanted a weekend outside the hustle and bustle of Chicago and this log cabin was the perfect retreat! Comfortably fit a large group. The house was stocked with everything we needed and the table games were a big added plus! Throughout the entire booking, Leah was very helpful from everything from directions to making sure everything was in order for our arrival. Checking in and out were super easy and stress free. A reminder to bring your own drinking water if you don't like the taste of minerals in your water. Also, loved the local bar nearby called The Mug with a fun bar and grill with tons of bar games (pool, shuffleboard, darts, etc). Will surely hope to come back in the summer. Thanks again!!!Owner response: Brendan, I heard the mug has great pizza too. Hope you can come back during the summer. Every season is amazing up at the cabin. Leah

I recently visited this beautiful Cabin with a family, we had a lovely time! The cabin is very spacious and cozy! We baked and cooked great meals, enjoyed drinks by the fireplace and played games. The lake across the street was so beautiful! We enjoyed it all to ourselves while we kayaked and canoed across the quiet peaceful lake. There was plenty of firewood and we all enjoyed s'mores and laughs by the campfire! I would recommend it for a long weekend getaway and for people of all ages! The cabin was just as we had seen it in the photos and it was very well kept and clean. Leah was very helpful, answered all my questions, and worked with me on all of my issues! She really went above and beyond! Thank you Leah for really thinking of everything and sharing your great cabin with us!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Every fall my sister and her husband, my husband and his brother along with his wife and their children gather for what we simply call "Sister's and Brother's Weekend". It started 4 years ago and each year we search for just the right cabin that will suit our growing family and offer plenty of activity for us to enjoy. We always hope that we find a place that we can return to year after year and FINALLY, I think we have found it! This cabin has a lot to offer that others do not--indoor game options (ping pong, etc.), a well stocked wood pile for indoor or outdoor cozy fires, optional canoe and kayak rentals and more. The cabin was exceptionally clean and there was not a long list of chores to do when we left. With the great outdoors beckoning there is no need for TV/internet distractions. We enjoyed paddling our way up and down the flowage, hiked on local trails, and found a county park near by to let our toddler expel his energy! The owners, Leah and Tim, have taken great pride in building a retreat for themselves and have willfully shared it with the public through rentals....Leah was a great communicator prior to our arrival to make sure our stay would be as perfect as possible. The only reason why I listed 4/5 for "Comfort" is because we had 6 adults in the cabin and there was not enough "Comfortable" places for us all to sit in one room (living room) to just relax and have conversation. Also, the dining table inside was small for the capacity of the cabin (4 chairs)--BUT, there are plenty of other spaces to sit and eat...just would have been great to have a larger table. If we were there in the summer there is a GREAT outdoor eating area/deck with ample seating. We plan to return in 2013 for the 5th annual Sister's and Brother's Weekend!Owner response: What a great family tradition. We are sorry you didn't see the extra folding table and chairs for 11 guests for the dining room. And as you pointed out later, your sister took the rocking chair from the living room and brought it downstairs to the bedroom to rock her baby to sleep. The living room and the fireplace is the heart of the cabin, and we make sure there's lot's of comfy places to relax. Hope you can come back soon. Leah

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: My husband, with a little help from me, my son and some friends, built our log cabin over a two- year period. We bought the ten-inch logs from a local man who builds log cabins and owns a lumberyard. The logs were harvested from this man’s sustainable forest. We tried to incorporate recycled and reused materials as well as new green products, such as radiant-heat bamboo flooring. We are just starting to rent the cabin. We hope to find vacationers that will respect and appreciate all the hard work that went into creating the log cabin. We are told by family and friends that the place has wonderful karma. I am a writer and over a one-month period, I wrote a book at the cabin, which will be published shortly. My husband renovates old properties and sells or rents them and is an energy auditor.
Why the Owner Chose Black River Falls:
We bought land here because we wanted a place that we can get to for the weekend that wasn't a long drive, but looked like the North Woods. We have had a camper on the property for a number of years, and have spent wonderful times in the region. We can share information about great hiking trails, where to eat and shop etc. The Black River region is not as well-known as the “North Woods,” but it is closer, less congested and beautiful. My husband loves to come up just to smell the pines and watch the wildlife. We hope you will love the region too!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
There are so many choices of activities to do without getting in your car. It's so nice to drive-up and stay put. We try to keep the place a no electronic zone, although it is not easy. When we do however, we end-up reading more, playing cards and enjoy quiet thinking time, which is often elusive in our busy lives.
