About this property

PEACE, PRIVACY AND HISTORY—ALL WRAPPED UP IN A MAGICAL SETTING

Set amidst the magical forest of 'Brocéliande' in Brittany, France, home to King Arthur, Merlin and the noble knights and ladies of Medieval times, this enchanting Chateau is situated on a hilltop that overlooks 181 lush, private, and peaceful acres of tranquil woods and verdant fields.

Located within the extensive property is a Manoir that dates from the 13th to 15th centuries with four fully furnished ‘themed’ self-catering apartments and a medieval Dining Room/Hunter's Lodge. Other medieval structures hold the 'Knight's Room', an 'Assembly Room' with stage, cinema, and fully equipped kitchen for catering, an ancient outdoor bread oven, an artist studio, a working dairy farm that provides our guests with fresh milk, and of course, the 19th century Gothic Chateau.

Le Mur' (The wall) is a privately owned estate situated on the highest peak in the surrounding countryside, and is a historic site recognized by the French Government. What was at one time a Medieval hamlet (and still exist today as the Manoir and adjacent out-buildings), was sat along-side the ancient 'Roman Road'.

Historic ruins on the site include a Roman earth berm (wall) built for observation and protection for the Roman soldiers whom utilized the site as a military camp, foundations of a Roman Temple, and a chariot drive. The remains of two medieval forts and moats have also been discovered on the property. Guests can stay at either the ancient Manoir or the 19th Century Chateau.

Located in the bucolic countryside, Le Mur is central to everything Brittany has to offer, from large Medieval towns on both the Channel and Atlantic Coasts, to lovely touristic villages just minutes away. The property can also be rented in its entirety, and can hold up to 50+ guests making it a comfortable place for corporate and family retreats. As guests of Le Mur, enjoy an afternoon picnic under the shade of the ancient Roman Arch (at one time the entry to the hamlet), hike along the numerous wooded paths, romp through fields of wild flowers to feed and play with the miniature pony and Ouessant sheep (the smallest breed of sheep in the world), read a book or simply nap under a canopy of trees in the apple, peach and pear orchards.

Ernie and Terry Monaco, the American owners of Le Mur, will be on-site to assist you with any questions on the area and to make your holiday a carefree, peaceful stay.

Chateau Le Mur sits at the top of a hill with breathtaking views from the back patio as well as the tower deck. The ground floor of the Chateau consists of a Clive Christian kitchen, a formal living room and dining room with hand painted ceilings, a formal den/office and 1/2 bath. The 1st floor has 3 en-suite bedrooms, 1 bedroom with a 1/2 bath and laundry facilities. The 2nd floor has a large office space, 3 bedrooms and a shared bath that consists of a very large bathroom with sunken double bathtub, double vanity sink and shower. The tower has one bedroom and a private terrace with astounding views of the countryside. The 'Cave' (basement) has a large wine room, a comfortable cinema room, and additional laundry facilities.
The estate consists of a Chateau and 15th Century Manoir (includes 4 furnished apartments), two orchards, fields, gardens, forest, trails, a Medieval Assembly/multi-purpose room (holds 50), an English library, additional medieval kitchen, a medieval dining room, and a 'knights' room. Additionally it is a working dairy farm with cows, small Ouessant sheep and a pony.

About the host

Host profile image
Ernie and Terry Monaco, the American owners of Chateau Le Mur, have a had a long history together of joining a romantic, theatric, and creative Spirit.
Married for thirty some odd years, (they have now lost count) they have lived a life of adventure traveling the world collecting interesting artifacts and experiences.
Having met in Chicago while Ernie was studying Urban Planning, and Terry Graphic Design, they set out to conquer the world. After settling war refugees in Chicago, feeding the homeless in Philadelphia, renovating tumble down houses in California, they finally set out with their two kids to the tiny but wealthy nation of Qatar. While there, Ernie helped design and manage a city on water, and Terry taught at an American University, wrote and directed comedic, musical plays while at the same time together managing a Christian youth group and underground church.
They have had the opportunity to travel the world and have met many precious people from all walks of life, learning along the way that life can be extremely wonderful—and at the same time very, very challenging.
Therefore they have created Chateau Le Mur to be a magical, peaceful haven from the world, and invite you to come share in what they have created here. From a fairy-like castle filled with treasures collected from all over the globe to the whimsical ‘Rapunzel's Tower’, ‘The Knight’s Chambre’, ‘The Fairy Room’ and ‘The Dark Enchanted Forest’ to the fabled personages who ‘at one time lived in the manoir’ they've created a place that calls to the child in all of us.
Ernie and Terry are fortunate at present to have their daughter, Arianna, and grandson, Tristan, living with them, along with two fluffy cats, one timid scruff of a dog, a gentle miniature pony, and some teeny-tiny sheep.

Why they chose this property

The Monaco's originally purchased this property because it allowed them host various activities and large numbers of guests during holidays. The 181 acre estate includes the Chateau as well as a 15th century Manoir that has 4 individual furnished apartments with matching Medieval furniture and decor. It is a fascinating historical property, inhabited in prehistoric times evidenced by government protected 'Menhirs' (pre-historic standing stones) located on the property, remains of a Roman Military camp, chariot drive, and temple, medieval arch, and remains of moats and lookout areas. 'Le Mur' in French means 'the wall' (berm) that the Romans built to overlook the area. Rich in history, with legends of knights, an evil Lord, his princess daughter, a Saint with the ability to perform miracles, and wars between clans and villages (all chronicled by local village historians) It is a fascinating place to live and visit. The 'Le Mur' estate includes two orchards, a 'dark enchanted forest', walking trails, and a working dairy farm.

What makes this property unique

Situated on the highest hill in the surrounding countryside (a great military advantage when under Roman rule) the views are extraordinary. There is complete and total privacy, and yet the property is located at the center of everything wonderful Brittany has to offer. The Monaco's like to think of Chateau Le Mur and Manoir du Mur as a piece of history that they are temporary caretakers of. They have been fortunate to have spent a lot of time traveling the globe purchasing items with the Chateau and Manoir always in mind. They have literally sent crate-fulls of furniture and artifacts to France from various places they have visited, that have a medieval yet whimsical feel, and in keeping with the themes of the romantic Chateau Le Mur and the medieval Manoir du Mur.
