Little Gasparilla Island cottage description
Newly available in March 2012! This immaculate 2 bedroom/2 bath beachfront cottage boasts the most secluded spot on Little Gasparilla Island --- along with first-class amenities, wireless internet, kayaks for exploring the bay's quiet coves and keys, docks, beach gear, recreational gear, and more.
360 degrees of porches and sun decks overlook 360 degrees of un-interrupted beach, waves, dunes, lagoons, island flora and fauna!
Little Gasparilla has miles of beautiful white sand beach, but this cottage is the only house that borders the protected state park, beach and lagoons --- over a mile of completely undeveloped natural beach, without any houses, lies right outside the door.
Our cottage is available for weekly or long-term rental (please contact owners directly for discounts on stays of two weeks or longer.)
The cottage is part of 'Osprey Point', a private bay-to-beach retreat, surrounded by the Gulf and lagoon to the west, Lemon Bay state aquatic preserve to the east, Don Pedro state nature preserve to the north, and undeveloped privately-held land to the south. It is the only house on the island that overlooks the beach and a natural lagoon (part of the pass that once connected Little Gasparilla Sound to the Gulf of Mexico). Almost an island unto itself, the cottage can only be accessed by the private boardwalks that stretch from the dock on the bay to the dunes on the beach, winding through picturesque mangroves along the way.
There is a king bed in the master bedroom and two single beds in the second bedroom. A loft is suitable for an older child or teen who is capable of negotiating its tricky ‘ship’s ladder’ access (air mattress provided). The cottage is ideal for 1 or 2 couples, 1 to 4 single adults, or a couple with 1 or 2 children.
Originally built as a guest accommodation for the main residence (a larger house that stands on the bay) the cottage was sold separately years ago but has recently been re-acquired, renovated, re-furnished, and now for the first time is offered for short or long-term rental.
Mirroring the classic “Old Florida” style of the main house, the cottage is built of cedar with hardwood floors, a wrap-around screened porch, and deep overhanging eaves to shade the sun. Eight sets of French doors (two sets in each bedroom, two in the living area and two in the kitchen/dining area) open onto the screen porch to take full advantage of the ocean’s sights, sounds, and breezes. Cathedral ceilings and ceiling fans in each room (complemented by central heat/air conditioning) provide year-round comfort.
In addition to the wrap-around screened porch there is a large sundeck off the kitchen and main living area, and another sundeck off the master bedroom. These decks and porches offer many comfortable options for ‘al fresco’ seating, grilling and dining, or for simply enjoying the Florida sunshine.
The spacious and fully-screened ground level provides a covered, shady space for hammocks and chairs, plus a second bathroom, laundry facilities, and a second refrigerator/freezer.
Another sundeck, located at ground-level just behind the dunes, offers a convenient place to stash beach gear. (All gear must be removed from the beach after sundown in order to protect the nesting and hatchling sea turtles.) Showerheads and foot washing stations are also conveniently located along the boardwalk.
Little Gasparilla is a barrier island, one of the glistening white ‘string of pearls’ that stretch almost 100 miles along Florida’s southwest coast from Tampa to Sanibel. While not far from Disney, it’s a world away from the crowds, high-rise condos, and T-shirt shops of the east coast. In fact, Little Gasparilla Island can be accessed only by boat (either water taxi or private boat ). There is no bridge or car ferry --- and therefore there are no roads or cars, no commercial services or shopping, and very few people. You’ll quickly notice that the osprey, eagles, pelicans and shore birds far outnumber humans. In fact, there are many days when you’ll see more dolphins in the bay than people on the beach.
Cell phone reception is quite good, and wireless internet (wi-fi), so you can stay in touch with the office if you really want to. While there is no cable or satellite television service, there is a TV and a “family-friendly” VHS movie library, along with traditional board games and an iPod/MP3/CD audio system.
As is common in the coastal and Caribbean islands, water is provided from a cistern system which captures, filters, and treats rainwater. While this means remembering to conserve water, especially during the dry season, such systems provide water even more pure than is generally found in large municipal systems.
The cottage is elevated and not handicapped-accessible. All guests must be physically capable of negotiating stairs, climbing in and out of boats, and getting on and off of docks.

Like Two Kids On Summer Vacation
Like Two Kids On Summer Vacation
My husband and I LOVE this house! It is professionally decorated and comfortably furnished with touches of whimsy thrown in for fun. The master bed is luxurious and cozy. The kitchen is not huge but just perfect for two or three people to whip up wonderful meals to eat out on the deck and afterward enjoy beautiful views of the water. What makes this house so perfect is that it is surrounded by some of the most spectacular flora and fauna I have ever seen. Wild creatures are everywhere and the mangroves, flowers, and sand dunes are amazing to look at. We saw turtles, armadillos, birds of all kinds, manatees and dolphins. My husband and I were like kids at summer camp. We did a lot of exploring the nearby park. We looked for shells. We kayaked around the bay side of the Island. We stayed up late and watched the unbelievably huge night sky twinkling with stars. Our souls were refreshed by the sheer purity of the natural surroundings here. The owner is so kind and caring. We thank her for sharing this lovely house with vacationers like us. We felt welcome right from the start and we look forward to our next visit.

WOW! This is an amazing place to get away from it all. It exceeded our hopes and expectations for a restful, relaxing vacation in a quiet place of scenic beauty. The photographs accurately capture how truly delightful this well-appointed beach house is. The owners, Andy and Rebecca, have gone to great lengths to make your stay a memorable one that you will want to repeat; they truly have the gift of hospitality! We were delighted to discover how easy it is to grocery shop on the mainland and take the water taxi to the island for a restful uninterrupted week of vacation characterized by walks on the beach, beautiful sunsets, and delicious seafood. The opportunity to gather for worship in the quaint island chapel was a pleasant way to begin our week. We would recommend this property to anyone hoping to retreat from the routine of life and truly rest in a tranquil setting. We hope to make this an annual retreat for our family!

Great Vacation spot
Great Vacation spot
This cottage is beautifully furnished, clean and very comfortable. We especially liked the French doors in every room that opened to screened porches...really brought the outside in. The beach is beautiful and uncrowded...a novelty for Florida. It is particularly nice that it is bounded by the Don Pedro State Park, which has kept out any additional development. We had hoped for lots of birding opportunities, but due to the ongoing red tide problem, there were very few shorebirds. The owner had been very candid with us about this, so we were forewarned. There is no tv, or DVD player; however there is a collection of very dated VCR's...bring a good book or two!!

Our stay on Little Gasparilla Island was near perfect. We wondered if the listing was accurate. Well, the property and trip exceeded our expectations. The owners may have undersold! They thought of everything to make our stay a relaxing delight. The cottage is pretty, clean, and comfortable. We felt right at home. We loved the screened in porches and all the little seating areas. But our favorite part had to be the beach. Cleanest beach we have ever seen. Great shelling and birding and dolphin watching. We took many walks up and down. Rarely passed another person. It was like having our own private island. Didn’t really want to leave the island but did go to Boca Grande for ice cream at the Loose Caboose which was great. While on the mainland we rented a stand up paddleboard for a few days. What a great way to enjoy the gulf. Even had a couple of dolphin swim within inches of us. We weren’t sure about cooking for ourselves but it worked out great. The Publix that Rebecca sent us to had prepared foods and we grilled a couple of times. We hope to return soon.

My husband and I spent four wonderful days at your beautiful beach house. It was the most relaxing vacations we ever had. We loved the idea of arriving at the island and not leaving, shopping, or dining out. We had our breakfasts in one eating area on the screened porch and had happy hour each afternoon lounging in another section of the screened porch. We loved the fact that when you wanted a break from the beach or the sun, the screened porch area gave many options of sun, shade and sites (ocean views or different island views) since it wrapped 3/4 of the way around the house. Our daily walks on the beach were also a highlight of our stay. Everyday we would find new treasures and see new wildlife. We even had the opportunity to watch dolphins swimming just off shore one morning. Every night we enjoyed the most beautiful sunsets on the beach. It was too short of a stay for both of us and we would love to return and share your beach house and island with our children. Thank you for a well needed break from reality with your little slice of heaven. (Rebecca, the owner, was extremely helpful and kind. Since this island has no stores to buy anything, including food, Rebecca made sure that we were able to arrive with any necessary supplies. We were so happy to meet her in person before we left. After our phone calls arranging the trip, I felt like we were long lost friends.)

Super Fantastic Vacation Spot!
Super Fantastic Vacation Spot!
My wife, two kids and I just left one of the best vacation spots we have ever been. The secluded house was quite, beautiful and clean! We enjoyed the easy boat access AND the beach! We caught enough fish to cook on the grill on the back deck. The decks were completely screened in and we enjoyed the boardwalks from the beach to the bay. My wife enjoyed kayaking off the beach and we enjoyed launching the 23 ft fishing boat we rented from the Gasparilla Marina. We also rented a golf cart to explore the island a little. Rebecca and Andy, the home owners, we're great to work with. They made us feel comfortable, gave us advice on what to bring and provided instructions for everything. We truly relaxed and can't wait until the next time we get to visit! I highly recommend rented this property! Thank you Rebecca and Andy!

Year Purchased: 2011
About the owner: For the past 25 years we have resided in Virginia, most of that in Arlington, a suburb of Washington, DC. Rebecca grew up vacationing on Little Gasparilla Island and we began bringing our own family here many years ago. Now, with the kids grown and 'work from anywhere' technology, we are beginning to transition to full-time residence in our bay home on Little Gasparilla at Osprey Point. Heck, why not?
Why the Owner Chose Little Gasparilla Island:
Little Gasparilla is a unique and beautiful island, a delightful bit of the 'Old Florida' that is so hard to find these days. It's off the beaten path, very quiet, yet always very interesting. Sunrises, sunsets, and everything in between. Nature just seems to know how to put on a show. We really appreciate the fact that you need to take a boat to get here. It's part of the adventure. There's something about that boat ride that just makes everyday stress and the 'busyness of life' quickly fade away . This beach cottage is the most recent addition to 'Osprey Point', a private enclave at the north end of Little Gasparilla Island. With lots of open space, mangrove lagoons, palm trees, boardwalks and two docks to complement the beautiful beach (all bordered by protected nature preserves), Osprey Point is simply a wonderful place to be.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
This house stands by itself. . .literally. A mile of completely natural beach (no houses) and 6 additional miles of nearly natural beach lie right outside the door. Because of our uniquely natural setting we enjoy an abundance of wildlife, native palms and plants, and open spaces not generally found on the island. And this cottage has lots of porches and decks from which to enjoy the view and Florida sunshine in near-total seclusion, surrounded by nature. Yet it's really not that far from the mainland attractions and services.
