The upstairs comprises the master bedroom area including a sitting room and large, tiled, master bath. The master bedroom opens to the living room below from a charming balcony, closed off with French doors, and overlooking the fireplace below.

The large, private yard backs onto pines and stunning sunsets. Our own acreage connects to the cottage property and provides enjoyable sunsets and gentle wildlife. A doe has twins every year - watch them cavort. A fabulous red fox is often spotted sleeping on the road into the acreage, or cutting thru the back yard. And, watch for the eagles!

Heron Cottage - Charming Gothic Cottage in Quaint Northport

Why the Owner Chose Northport

We have owned vacation rentals on the Leelanau for over 30 years, however, we have focused on Northport for the following reasons: It is just a short drive to several beaches, Grand Traverse Lighthouse and Leelanau State Park and Dunes; equal distance to Leland, Suttons Bay, Omena; close to the Casino and many great wineries. Because it is at the northern tip of the peninsula it has less tourist traffic noise. The village is a quaint reminder of how small villages were like a century ago, yet includes a modern health and fitness center and great shops, restaurants, beaches and marina.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage

Oh, the porch in summer, reading books and sipping Leelanau wine. And, on cool nights the lovely fireplace! On the north-west side of the village, the house is quiet and private.

Great place to get away

We loved our stay at Heron Cottage! We brought our young family of 4 over Spring Break just this week. Although much of the area was still closed, as it was low season, there was still plenty to keep our family busy. We hiked in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, which was our family favorite. It was so fun to emerge from the woods and stumble onto the dunes with a fantastic view of Lake Michigan. And our kids climbed the dunes for hours! Also a favorite was Black Star Farms. The cottage provided glasses, so we were able to have a complimentary tasting. The farm was so much fun for our kids, and we loved the wine and cheese tasting. Really neat place. Overall, we were SO pleased with our stay. The house was well-furnished, the master suite was spacious and comfy, the towels were fresh and fluffy, laundry supplies were available ... we really enjoyed the fireplace. My only complaint would have been that we were a little surprised by the location. It mentioned that is was on 6 acres, but when we arrived, we were in a neighborhood. I don't know WHERE the acreage would have been. But we are social people, so we didn't mind that we weren't isolated. Northport is a really cute, friendly little village. And the walk to the beach was brief and enjoyable. Well-maintained, fantastic little place at a really great price, and close to lots of activities. Perfect. :) Thank-you for making the process and the stay so effortless.

Owner response:We're thrilled our guests enjoyed Heron Cottage and appreciate their time to give us a review. I apologize for any misunderstandings about our acreage. Because of the misunderstanding, we have better explained the house location. However our copy used to read, "House overlooks our, private 6 acres for beautiful sunsets and wildlife viewing, peaceful, secluded." The house sits on its own lot, to the front of and adjacent to the open six acres, which are to the west of the house and has its own landscaped drive; with an additional open 60 acres to the west of these that used to be a cherry orchard. A wood fence does separate the two areas. The sunsets are fabulous: weather permitting. The 6 acres used to be the site of an old original farm house which unfortunately no longer remains; only the crab apple trees, blackberries and lilacs are still there. The living room and the breezeway, face this land to the west. Our heartfelt thank you to our Heron Cottage Extended Family!

Wonderful stay!

Date of Stay: 06/27/10 Review Submitted: 07/05/10

The Heron Cottage is definitely as beautiful and as fine a place to stay as the pictures demonstrate! We had a wonderful week there while touring the beautiful sites (and wineries!) of the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas. The house was spotless when we arrived, and it's evident it has been excellently maintained! It is beautifully decorated--silk flower arrangements everywhere!--and yet very comfortable as well. The master bedroom suite was great, and the walk-in shower was huge! Until we arrived, we were skeptical because the price was so reasonable but, as soon as we opened the door, we knew we had located an excellent vacation home! They added wi-fi just before our arrival which was a bonus. It's an easy bike ride into town for breakfast at the Treasure Chest--it's evident that's where the town folk gather and the owner was a delight. It's also an easy drive to all of the towns and villages of the Leelanau Peninsula as well as to Traverse City. Nancy, the owner, was great to work with as we planned our trip, as she answered all of our questions promptly and helpfully. And when we encountered a brief problem with the wi-fi connection our first evening, Nancy and Terry were on top of it immediately and, within the hour, they had contacted Charter and it was resolved. Can't speak highly enough about the Heron Cottage--it's so lovely and so comfortable--and Nancy and Terry are wonderful hosts!
