For beaches, boats, and beautiful times, Bequia beckons
A haven for saints, there was never a lovelier place in all of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The largest island in the Grenadines, Bequia, pronounced "bekway," is a lush, S-shaped island which lies 9 miles south of Saint Vincent. Book a centrally located Bequia vacation rental and spend lazy days pottering around Port Elizabeth, the colorful village-like capital, rent a yacht and sail across Admiralty Bay, or learn the art of doing nothing on the white, white sands of Princess Margaret Beach—it's what vacation memories are made of.
Have a turtle-y brilliant time on Bequia
On the northeastern shores of the island is the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary. Run by Brother King, a fisherman and wildlife lover, this charming little sanctuary has already rescued and released 2,000 hawksbill turtles into the Caribbean Sea. It's also home to the island's red-foot tortoises. Bequia also has a long tradition of hand-carved model boats. Visit the Sargeant Brothers Model Boat Shop, where locals carve beautifully intricate wooden vessels. Although it won't take you long to explore, the Bequia Maritime Museum in the main town is as charming as they come.
Bequia's beaches are oh-so becoming
If life on Bequia was any more laid-back, it would be horizontal. Book a centrally located Bequia vacation rental and have access to all the island's main attractions. Many come to visit the markets in Port Elizabeth, or rent a boat and go dolphin-spotting over the harbor. But if it's beaches you want, then look no further than Princess Margaret Beach, a popular bathing and snorkeling spot with a distinctly Caribbean vibe. After dark, why not sample some of Bequia's friendly hospitality with a local beer or 3 in a beach shack bar.
Feeling hot, hot, hot? Going balmy on Bequia
Like many Caribbean islands, Bequia benefits from a beautiful, balmy climate all year round. Most days see the mercury rise to 80 or 90 degrees, cooling down slightly in the evening. But not much! Peak season is usually December through to May, when the snowbirds flock in search of winter sun and Bequia vacation rentals often get snapped up quickly. The wet season is between May and December, yet showers are brief, and the sun always comes out to play again. The island's more southerly location means that hurricanes are rare, even during peak storm season.
