  • Tortuga Azul - Why Are You Reading This, Just Go

"From the moment I began researching a solo trip for my wife and I, I wanted something romantic, different, and outside the comfort zone of a resort in the Caribbean. After seeing a house hunters international episode, and consulting with a well travelled friend, San Juan Del Sur was the front runner. And upon researching on VRBO and HomeAway, I found Tortuga Azul. From the moment I paid the deposit I knew I had made the right call. The owners were extremely engaged the moment we agreed to the dates and I paid the deposit. They send you a boatload of extremely useful information about the town, the area, the food and how to get around. So how was our experience? We are that annoying couple who want to tell you about our vacation. Tortuga Azul is as beautiful as depicted in the pictures. Its absolutely perfect. The house is beautiful, the pool and its views are amazing, and the groundskeeper is extremely nice and unintrusive. When we were at the house, we wanted to swim and be alone. The doors of the house all open and the ceiling fans circulate the Pacific air and breezes throughout the house. Just as good as the house is the support you receive from the owners. The property manager is extremely helpful if you have questions and even gave us a ride into town when she dropped off the keys and rental cell phone (a huge bonus if you need to give a number to someone in the states to reach you while in Nicaragua). Finally, the owners recommend a driver and tour guide named Elie. Elie was amazing. He had someone pick us up at the airport, (his car had broken down) and was always available to send us drivers when we wanted to go somewhere. In addition, he took us on two tours, one to watch the turtles come ashore and lay eggs, and the other for a surf lesson at the most gorgeous beach I have ever seen. If we needed information, he had it. He was the nicest most engaging person, and he made our vacation the best one we have taken since our honeymoon 10 years ago. In all, the owners of this house have a beautiful vacation home, they provide you with a boatload of information, and provide you with the support once in Nicaragua to make your trip a once in a lifetime event. I cannot recommend this house, the town, the owners or the support people they provide once you arrive in Nicaragua enough. I wish there were more stars to give this property and the owners. A superlative trip. Thank you both and we are telling our friends."

"My friend and I stayed here for a week and it could not have been more perfect for us. We felt safe with the 24/7 security guards and loved being so close to town. The property is tucked away into its own little private and quiet oasis - removed from the nightlife of downtown San Juan. The space easily accommodated us. It is clean and very well maintained. Although we ate all our meals out, the kitchen is fully stocked with equipment. We both took full advantage of the hammock right outside our apartment sneaking in little naps in between activities. Enrico was super informative in offering ideas for "must do" while in San Juan and was able to organize a driver, Allen, to take us from and to the airport. Allen was great he gave was so much information on the country and was able to organize a horse back riding adventure for us. I would go back in a heartbeat it's that good!"

  • Garden Cafe property an oasis

"I stayed in the VRBO room for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The room is spacious and ceilings amazing. The three fans and thick walls made it comfortable. Breakfast, included, was a real treat. I can still taste the coconut French toast and the passion fruit smoothies!! The restaurant is in a beautiful setting and i loved the music. The lounge room was very comfortable and inviting, especially on hot days. All the staff was warm and welcoming and the early morning taxi driver to the airport was nice and early and conveyed me safely to the airport. I would definitely stay there again."

  • We had a great stay at Mar Y Sol!

"PROS: -House was perfect for two couples. -Loved the kitchen and open living/dining room design. -On-site property managers were pleasant and attentive. -We regularly purchased cokes-in-bottles from Flor. -Very short walk to a nice beach that we enjoyed. -Beautiful sunsets from the bar/restaurants steps from the house. -Very short drive to SJDS and grocery store. -Fun day trip to Playa Coco (45 minute drive on very rough road) CONS: (Keep in mind that you are visiting Nicaragua, not Hawaii, so certain aspects (e.g. the smell of burning trash) are unavoidable.) -Air conditioning unit was in one bedroom, the other bedroom got pretty hot even though we turned the A/C unit on around 4PM and left both bedroom doors open. -Barbed-wire fence gate leading to property was a bit of hassle to open and close, and slightly dangerous. But you see this kind of gate/fence all over Nicaragua. -Also, the directions for getting to the house were a little unclear once we got to the driveway, since the "gate" just looks like a normal fence. -They're building a house next door so construction noise was very audible. -Two mice in the kitchen, one found in a cupboard (dead) and one seen running around (alive). All of these "CONS" didn't really detract from the wonderful time we had a Mar y Sol, but I thought they deserved mentioning. I will also say that I was a bit nervous about crime in the area after reading different reports online, however we didn't have a single problem during our week-long stay at Mar y Sol. Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did!"
