Saints, sands, and sun in Patmos
If you like your Johns saintly and your beaches sandy, then you've come to the right place. This tiny island in the Aegean is where St. John The Theologian is said to have written the Book of Revalations nearly 2,000 years ago, and it's drawn Christian pilgrims to its shores for centuties. But Patmos is more than that just a pilgrimage site. Its sandy beaches, clears blue waters, and vibrant bars and restaurants make it an ideal summer destination, especially if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the larger Greek Islands.
Don't worry, it's not really the end of the world
It's hard to miss the Monastery of St. John. Built in the 11th century, the fortress sits atop the historic village of Chora, and contains many relics—it's an absolute must. While you're there, you should check out Chora itself. Its charming streets and Cycladic-style buildings are easy on the eye, and there are lots of interesting galleries, museums, and restaurants serving up local fare, as well as a few places to grab a cold drink. Staying with the subject of St. John, why not check out the ominously named Cave of the Apocalypse, where the saint is believed to have experienced divine visions.
Soak it up, hop it up, and rev it up in Patmos
While it may be small, Patmos has plenty of beaches where you can soak up some serious vitamin D. Psili Amos and Agrio Livadi are among the island's most scenic and popular. If you fancy doing some island hopping while you're in Patmos, you can take a boat tour from the harbor that drops you off at jaw-dropping beaches on nearby islands. Away from the beach there's still plenty to do. One of the best ways to see Patmos is to rent a scooter or a quad bike, which are the perfect vehicles for the island's small winding roads.
