About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-9)

Turning Creek is a custom executive home in the historic community of McCloud, CA, set on 2.3 acres with Squaw Creek running through the property. The western portion is beautifully landscaped with Colorado Blue Spruce, huge lawn, Rhododendrons, and Sun Azaleas. Large decks and patios and built-in lavarock barbecue invites one to the backyard. The bridge from the back yard crosses the creek to the natural woods.

This 2000-foot (approximately) home features the Creek View bedroom with a California King sleigh bed and a sleigh daybed. A window seat looks out to Squaw Creek. Just before the bathroom is a huge walk-in closet. The master bath features a luxurious whirlpool tub.

The Shasta View bedroom contains a queen bed and an extra long twin with a spectacular view of Mt. Shasta, with an attached 1/2 bath. Both the California King and Queen beds feature Tempurpedic mattresses. Two rollaway twin beds are stored in a closet, for guests up to 200 lbs. Complete privacy for 4 people, we are licensed for up to 9. The bedrooms are at opposite sides of the house, perfect for 2 couples or a couple with children.

A large sunken Living Room with mountain views and a wood-burning stove, games, puzzles, a library and cable TV (35') and a DVD player help you enjoy your stay. A fabulous dining room and kitchen (with a 1920's Wedgewood stove, decorative use only) complete the charm of the home. Additionally there is large entry hall with a desk for your laptop, laundry room and two car garage. A full bath is accessible from the hall. There is now a WiFi modem onsite so there should be no problems connecting. There is a small TV with built in DVD player and cable in the Shasta View bedroom

The house has recently been remodeled with new carpeting, new hardwood sanding and finish, new wallpaper in the Master Suite and new tile in the baths. A few bugs are still being worked out. We are no longer accepting dogs because of some damage to the house and all the new finishes and carpeting. There is a boarding kennel in Mt. Shasta if you'd like your pet close. Some dogs that have been previous guests are exceptions.

Take a taste of McCloud home with you, be sure to bring empty jugs to fill with the famous McCloud spring water from the tap.

Your stay at our home offers some wonderful options included in the package:

Wine Exchange...

We had to eliminate this because of our insurance rules for Vacation Rentals.

Photographs and Fine Art...

The photographs and fine art used to decorate Turning Creek are by local artists.

Paperback Exchange...

A section of our library offers paperback novels we have already enjoyed. Feel free to start a new novel from our library and take it with you to finish at your leisure. If you have one you have finished, feel free to leave it on the shelf.

We also have a library of books to enjoy but not take, including books about the area, fishing musings and children's books, and other eclectic choices.

* Anyone with young children please take note. Squaw Creek is beautiful and shallow but very cold and fast-running. Attendance to small children is imperative. There are flip-locks on the doors leading to the back, please use them and make sure an adult watches them at all times near the creek.

About Anne

We fell in love with McCloud after my husband worked in this area as a land surveyor. After a vacation at Old Station we were driving to a college friend's house in Lake Shastina when Ian drove me around McCloud. I looked around and said, "I could live here". A month later I called him and in 2005 we bought our house, the one next door upstream. In 2006, Turning Creek came up for sale and we figured we would never get two houses side by side on the creek. I made the offer without my husband even seeing the place with his go-ahead. It closed on his birthday and we use it for family reunions and when our kids come up, or down or across. They are well spread out so that leaves plenty of times for guests at Turning Creek. I spend most of my time in McCloud while Ian still works in the Bay Area until I can get him to retire.

Anne purchased this house in 2006

Why Anne chose Shasta Cascade

Turning Creek is a beautiful blend of space and comfort with the feeling of living in the woods. A friend named it "Turning Creek" as she was thinking what the Native Americans would call it. The creek twists and turns on the property, from the Master Bedroom bay window the creek comes straight at you and then turns and continues straight for awhile.

What makes this house unique

The Creek. Gazebo. Tall older growth forest. Convenience of being in town yet feeling like you are miles away. On a private drive. Tempurpedic beds. 2.3 acres to spread out on. Landscaped on one side of the creek, wild on the other. Wildlife, including deer, squirrels, our bear who likes garbage and an occasional ottter going after the native trout in the creek. Large rooms. 2 ovens. Small TVs.(not kidding the largest is 30 something inches.) Cable, electricity and internet, though on site can sometimes go out in storms or accidents. Sitting in the Bay window seat looking at the creek. Standing on the bridge across the creek letting my cares wash away and go downstream. Fresh, cold spring water without any treatment straight from the tap. Nearness to so many naturals wonders and when you visit no one is there! I could go on. Winter power outages can occur and there is no cable or wifi (can set up you phone as a portable hotspot) during the winter season. Travelers will shovel their own snow but the private drive is plowed as well as the lower driveway if your car is not in it.

Spacious, perfect creek side setting and modern home close to town.

  • 5 of 5

We were two couples who stayed for 4 nights for the Burning Tango event and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The house has two bedrooms at opposite ends ensuring privacy and a quiet environment. It's modern, spacious with a large kitchen with hardwood floors (useful for practicing our tango moves) and then, just relaxing. Although we were only 12 minute walk from the town, it was so hot during our stay (90+) that we drove. The good news is that the house stayed naturally cool even under hot conditions and it was never a problem. The house was very well stocked and had everything we needed. The back yard deck and babbling creek made for an idyllic and relaxing setting.

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We spent 7 nights in this lovely, comfortable house. Everything was perfectly set up for maximum comfort and convenience, very functional kitchen for me, the kind of person who brings along my own knives and definitely cooks. But the best is the location with the creek right off the back deck and the forest all around, just happens to be full of blooming rhododendrons right now. Beautiful. Looking forward to coming back in the future.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you had a great time! A few notes about the property: The kitchen is very usable and has 2 ovens, though it does not have the latest subway tile, everything works except the ice maker because running the tiny lines to it is not prudent in a place where we are frozen most the winter. We do provide ice trays and the artesian spring water comes out of the tap at around 38 degrees years round. The hardwood floors in the kitchen and dining area have been recently refinished. The master bath has a jetted tub and the hallway bath has a shower, attached to the other bedroom is a half bath. For a 2 bedroom home, it has more bathrooms than most. As for the working code, I'm not sure if she is referring to the key box code or the internet code, I gave both working ones. I went over and opened the door for them because they had not gone to the driveway in the instructions. It is a little confusing as Turning Creek has two driveways and two garages, although only the one attached to the house is available for guest parking. We hope you come back in a warmer time, when the acreage can be enjoyed more.

Beautiful warm and welcoming home in a peaceful setting.

Anne puts the perfect touch on a wonderful, relaxing stay at Turning Creek. We have stayed a number of times and have never been disappointed.

The hardest part of the stay at Turning Creek, is having to leave.

Magical Solace

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks. The home is perfect in every way. The mornings were spent on the back deck watching the little insects darting in and out of the warm sun rays like faeries welcoming the new day. The antics of the woodland birds was also fun to watch, especially the arguments they had with the resident squirrel. The sound of the creek was soothing to hear throughout the day - and if you closed your eyes, your problems would be carried away with each ripple. The home is large and warm, the bed is more than comfortable and we easily drifted off to sleep each night. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals - which we of course ate outside.

The owner - Anne - only adds to the magic of the home. My husband and I have been vacationing in North State for over 20 years, and never have I met such a warm and caring owner. She made absolutely sure that our needs were met, and when our car couldn't start, she came over with her vehicle to give us a jump. There is much, much more to this story that is just not worth mentioning, since the bottom line is, Anne has a heart of gold.

So, in closing, if you are searching for a place to stay where you will be welcomed by the owner, greeted by the magic of nature, and will never regret your decision - then Turning Creek is certainly ready to welcome you home.

Beautiful location, convenient to town, loved the creek and deck/patio in back.

We enjoyed our stay at Turning Creek. Lots of space. Well furnished. Property maintenance needs attention however - painting on exterior woodwork, decks and rails, etc. Kitchen knives need sharpening. TV and DVD remotes need new batteries - didn't work. Overall though, very pleasant and easy place to stay to enjoy the McCloud area. Anne's instructions letter was thorough and very informative.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. As I tell my guests in my welcoming letter, I am next door should you need anything (that includes batteries for the remotes). There was a knife sharpener in the kitchen I will look to see if it has disappeared, but again, I'm next door to help with things that may be missing. I leave my guests alone and let them initiate contact as Turning Creek is yours while you are a guest. You can always call, come over and catch me in my back woods gardening and I'm happy to help. I have a store of extra batteries, and other things that may be needed by a guest. Future guests, please let me know these things while you are staying and I will do my best to come up with what you need. Thanks for being our guests at Turning Creek.

We are located in town, north of Hwy 89 but the property is 2.3 acres on a private drive with the upper portion of Squaw Creek running through the property. We are less than a 3/4 of a mile from Main Street and and around the corner from Hoo Hoo Park. This is not a Mill house.
