Views that will have you saying "Mamma mia!"
Nestled into the cliffside of Santorini's northwestern coast, this whitewashed village is postcard-perfect. Peeking out onto the Aegean Sea with expansive caldera views, the houses are built and carved into the rock of the cliff face, making for some incredibly unique Oia vacation rentals. Explore the entire village on foot, weaving in and out of cobblestoned streets, or rent a car or ATV for the day and explore the rest of the island. Oia is the perfect gateway to Santorini, and your travel crew will quickly understand just what Meryl Streep was singing about.
Any time can be wine time on the island of Santorini
Santorini's stunning weather means most of your time will likely be spent outside, enjoying Greece's famous blues and whites. But should the Aegean winds kick up, Oia and Santorini are host to a variety of art and history museums, dedicated to the culture of the island. Santorini also features a growing local wine scene, with both private and small group winery tours available. Cap off the day with a bottle of your own in your Oia vacation rental, and consider giving it all up for the island life.
V is for volcanoes, villages, vistas, and views
Oia's top activities involve the water, from boat trips to the caldera, complete with dolphin spottings, to a hike up the active volcano, offering a new perspective of the village. Walk down to the port of Ammoudi to admire the colorful fishing boats, and hitch a donkey ride back into town. Cap off the day with a sunset cruise around the caldera, paired with a bottle of locally made wine. Or, scrap it all in favor of renting a scooter to drive around the island, and explore the lesser-known villages.
"Summers in Santorini" just has a nice ring to it, right?
Santorini and Oia's peak season lasts all summer, from June through September, with July serving as the hottest and most crowded month of all. The shoulder seasons of March through June, and September through November are most ideal for visiting, thanks to smaller crowds and temperate weather. Winters are becoming increasingly more popular, with more hotels staying open each year to accomodate the growing number of off-peak visitors. But be warned, February is the island's coldest and windiest month, making some of the island's popular sites a bit more difficult to enjoy.
Rough and rugged coastlines meet hot and heavy sunsets
Oia's unique cliffside location offers some of the most famous sunsets in the world, as well as an expansive view of the caldera. This is a vast volcanic crater, filled with water and surrounded by hot springs, warmed naturally by the volcanic activity. There are a few beaches along the island's rocky coastline, some with black sand. The vast majority of the village's houses are carved into the stone of the cliff and painted white to reflect the sun, making a Oia vacation rental look like nowhere else in the world.
