This was a nightmare. My first bad review EVER. We stayed 4 nights (Thursday through Sunday). I was traveling with my wife, 1 year-old daughter, and my in-laws. When we arrived on Thursday, the house was at 80 degrees. No biggie, I understand it's not economical to keep the house at 72 when no one is in it. However, as soon as we arrived, we turned the thermostat to 75 so that we could cool down. After unpacking our car and settling in (about an hour later) the house temp was now at 82! We thought maybe it was just our shuttling in and out... We left the thermostat at 75 and went to go get dinner, came back two hours later, STILL at 82!! So I alerted the owner right away. She came over, felt how warm it was, and said she would have her "repair man" come over. Shortly after, a man knocks on the door with a shop-vac and a jug of bleach. I'm no AC expert, but I could see he was assuming it was a clogged drain-line. This guy said the AC was running fine and blowing cold. It wasn't fixed. It got down to about 78 by the time we went to sleep (78 in St. Pete feels like 90 because of humidity). When we woke up, the temperature had creeped back down to 75 with the sun not being out. We thought maybe it was fixed. However, after a few hours in the house, it started to heat up again. We HADN'T even left the house! The owner then called a real AC company (and brought thermometers to the house - which made us feel like she thought we were lying to her. The thermometers also showed it was heating up). The repair person said the AC unit "was doing everything that it could". The owner also said they thought maybe the thermostat was going bad. That night, when we returned to the house, the thermostat starting clicking and shut off. NO AC THE WHOLE NIGHT! The owner did not respond to my texts. Saturday the "repairman" came again. He claims the overflow switch was tripped, and they installed a new thermostat. We were hopeful. Unfortunately, it was still 78 in the house again by 7:00pm. We just endured, thinking it was still warm from shutting the system down for part of the day. Sunday was the same. After telling the owner, he came over, basically threatening me that "this is enough", and that it was "plenty cool" in the house (he was standing in front of a fan we had set up). I tried to show him the temperature showing on the new Nest. He said he "didn't care what it said!" It was ridiculous. Complete denial. Embarrassing/Horrible experience with my in-laws.
Kelly and his family stayed at our guesthouse for 4 nights. Shortly after check in, he complained about the air conditioning not being cool enough. We immediately contacted our regular AC repair technician and he came out and evaluated then entire system and reported that he couldn't find anything wrong and that the AC blower was blowing cool air 58 F from all vents. He noted that the actual inside air temperature was 4 degrees cooler than what the thermostat was reporting. Kelly continued to complain, apparently focused on the thermostat reading, and so we contacted another AC company for second opinion. After he checked the entire AC system, he said AC blower is blowing cool air at 58 F and the house is cool and comfortable, and the inside temperature was 74-76 F. He stated in writing that there is nothing wrong with AC, and that it was doing what it is supposed to be doing. During the 2nd technician visit, two of the guests in Kelly’s party indicated that the temperature was fine. That evening around midnight, the AC unit quit working. We were notified first thing the next morning and immediately called the first AC repair technician back to the house. It turns out that the float switch cut off had been knocked out of place at some point causing the system to shut down. This was quickly rectified. He continued to complain that the house would not stay cool enough for his personal comfort. We contacted the AC company again for final evaluation. The technician (the fourth one) checked the entire AC system again, he stated nothing was wrong with AC. At this point, we found his expectations to be unrealistic for summertime in Florida, we felt as though everything that could have been done was done. We spent considerable amount of money to investigate a non-problem with our AC unit. Kelly’s AC power usage ended up being almost 2X our average during his stay & no one has ever complained about the temperature before or since. We have had over 160 guests in the past two years with a 5 star rating on our other listing site. I can only conclude that this particular guest had unreasonable expectations. I would not have him back. BE WARE OF THIS TROUBLED GUEST. we refunded one night he spent without AC but he wanted a refund for all 4 nights, we had no problem for full refund, if AC technicians had found problems with our AC unit. He was the problem not our AC, it was obvious that he had an intention to stay for free & will always find problems wherever he may be !
