Great Views and Water Access and a Huge Fully Fenced Yard

My primary purpose with this listing is to find guests who would be a good fit for the property. It's in a residential area, on Colington Island, 3 miles behind the Wright Memorial at Milepost 8, and about a 10 minute drive to the beach. Hello, and welcome to the Otter Creek Rental House page!

I designed and built the home 17 years ago to see if I could do it. Ended up having a ton of fun, and started designing and building homes professionally shortly thereafter, handing over my Real Estate Sales business to my wife, Heather VanderMyde. It was our primary home until this year, and we spent several months working on it, bringing it up to rental standards. Still not perfect, but getting there.

My carpenters named it Otter Creek because Otters would come play on the icy canal in front of the house during the winter they were building it. We've continued to see Otters occasionally over the years, usually in the mornings, coming out of the creek that drains the nearby wetlands into the sound.

It's a four bedroom, two bath house, with two king beds upstairs and two twin bedrooms downstairs. All mattresses are the thick foam type, and the twin beds downstairs can be pushed together and bound with a strap if a king bed is preferred.

The kitchen is set up for a cook, with two sinks, a new Samsung gas range, with a strong vent to the outside to keep the smoke down while searing. The wrap around bar makes it fun to entertain while cooking. I have tried to include everything a serious cook needs, including kitchen scale, instant thermometer, sharp knives, and everything else you'd expect. If there is an item you need that's missing, I will bring it!

The main TV is a 60" with Dish Network DVR, and the king rooms both have TVs with the same DVR service. The TV can be played through the stereo with subwoofer for better sound.

Internet is DSL with a wireless network - about 25 mbs.

I just bought a new hot tub for the deck of the master - it's a 6 person tub, with great views. To keep my regular rates low, there is a $100 fee to pay for the service & power. I try to leave it unfilled and off if I get breaks between rentals, so be sure to request it if you'd like it!

The house is largely powered by an 8 kW solar array on the roof. It also has a Tesla Wall Charger in the garage for my fellow Tesla owners.

It's a very private location with a large fenced yard, with a gate over the driveway. The entry is on the soundside screen porch, or through the garages downstairs, which will be open to guests.

I recently remodeled it with vinyl plank flooring to make it very pet friendly, and it also has a deck / boat lift to make getting kayaks and dogs in and out of the sound easy. The yard is huge and entirely fenced in, with a gate across the driveway.

We had a wonderful week at Otter Creek. John was quick to answer our questions and attend to our needs. The house was very clean and equipped thoroughly. We enjoyed the views, wildlife and quiet location. We would definitely return!

We really enjoyed our stay

Otter Creek was beautiful. We enjoyed our stay and love the Outer Banks. John was very helpful and responsive and we were able to enjoy our time there. The beds are AMAZING in all the rooms, not just the master. We ended up ordering a new bed on the drive home, due to the wonderful sleep we had during our stay. We would recommend Otter Creek to anyone!

Great house and location.

This home was perfect for our family vacation. We really appreciated the owner’s attention to detail. Loved the fact that the house has a solar power system, that is something we want to learn more about. We would definitely stay there again, and would recommend it highly to others.

Perfect place for a relaxing vacation!

The house could not have been perfect for our family of 6. The house would have been perfectly comfortable with 2 more as well. The location could not have been better. The house is in a large gated neighborhood in a quiet corner. We spent many mornings on the screened porch watching the sunrise over the sound. The boat dock made it easy to put our kayaks in explore the waters nearby. The open living space was ideal for spending time together as a family. The beds were all very comfortable as were the over-sized couches in the living room. I would highly recommend renting this home. The tranquil waterfront location on the sound, short drive to the beach, and many nearby attractions make this house even better.

Just got back home from our stay at this beautiful property. One week as not enough! Our family (including fur babies) enjoyed our vacation very much. The house was perfect: clean, ample room for all of us, had everything we needed (and beyond), and the location can't be beat. The house backs into the creek which allowed us to enjoy the wild life in the area...egrets, ducks, and a long nose gar that visits the dock everyday :) The house is only a few miles from the Croatan Highway. The owner, John, was very responsive and provided all the information I needed promptly. Our family is already talking about coming back next year. Thank you, John, for renting to us!
