Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, 2 person romantic getaway

Clarance Gonstead Guest Cottage was built for the world renowned chiropractor in 1952 by Architect, Herb Fritz Jr. in the Prairie Style of architecture made popular by Herb's Mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright. The cottage is centrally located in town on two acres and separated from the main house. The exterior is clad in clay tile and lanon stone and the interior finishes are stone and tide water cypress walls with quarry tile and carpet floors.

The hilly local terrain, abandoned level rail road trails and off road trails in the state park provide opportunity for all levels of biking enthusiasts. Mount Horeb has an 18 hole golf course, public pool and almost weekly organized events within walking distance. The radiant floor heating system and the proximity to down hill and cross country trails make an ideal winter retreat, unfortunately we have had to fall in line with all the other inns and discontinue use of the wood burning fireplace to satisfy insurance restrictions.

About Joyce Wall

I am an Architect and my wife is a recently retired 4th grade public school teacher.

Joyce Wall purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Joyce Wall chose South Central

We purchased the property because of the mature landscape and to prevent the landmark with it's historical connection to both Frank Lloyd Wright and Clarence Gonstead, from becoming 6 lots in a planned subdivision.

My wife walked across the street through the baseball diamond to work and I worked out of my home office for years so it was a good fit while raising kids.

What makes this cottage unique

Winter sunrise through the large sheets of glass, casts shadows on the field dressed lanon stone walls and reflects a warm tone off the low cypress ceilings. The radiantly heated floor and Music served up from an Ipod and played though the vintage Marantz stereo together with convenient proximity to down hill, cross country, skating and snow shoeing makes it a great romantic getaway for more energetic guests.

In the summer, the well placed mature landscaping provides cool shade and the thermal mass provides natural air conditioning so you can enjoy the interior environment or relax in a hammock under the filtered light of a mountain ash.

The proximity to Main Street and the Bike trail means that you can leave your car parked in the driveway to enjoy the Quaint downtown and traditional residential urban planning of the old town where sidewalks are not interrupted by driveways and garages are on the alley. Downtown is now home to the Duluth Trading Company and numerous art galleries with both traditional and European choices in dining. Locally brewed wines and a brewpub offer more reasons to extend your stay.

My husband and I so enjoyed this property and the owners!! We are Frank Lloyd Wright fans and love the design of this house and cottage. So much space to relax in and beauty for the eye also. We will be looking for a reason to come and stay again!

Gem in a great small town.

For anyone who appreciates architecture, to stay in a home like this is a privilege. On top of the aesthetics, we were provided with all we needed to enjoy Mount Horeb and the surrounding area. Phil and Joyce were gracious hosts and I'd recommend their cottage to anyone.

Fantastic rainy night in the guest cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Joyce & Phil are wonderful hosts. They welcome you with open arms, show you around this fabulous cottage, and then leave you alone. But they are just next door if you have any other questions. Great suggestions on places to eat and other things to do in the area. The cottage designed by Herb Fritz is a wonderful living example of the organic architecture of his mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright. Such a joy to spend the night in a place like this!

Special place

  • 5 of 5

Hosts were wonderful and welcoming. Cottage is unique in that it was a step back in time for us as we has stayed in the one bed cottage over 50 years ago with the original owners. As a architectural historical cottage it has a few quirks perfect for a couple- looking to enjoy unique setting and its charm in beautiful garden, would stay again thankyou for allowing us to enjoy your oasis close to town w & m

Beautiful. Peaceful. Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the Gonstead Cottage during our visit to the Madison area. After a full day of hiking and bicycling, it was wonderful to come "home" to our respite in Mt. Horeb. We had space to wander and space to stretch out and read. Phil and Joyce were friendly and kind to greet us and let us know if we needed anything at all while still being so respectful of privacy. A perfect balance! It is probably one of the nicest places we have ever stayed and would definitely stay here again. In fact, we hope to get to stay there again!

Restful and restorative

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Gonstead Guest Cottage in charming Mt. Horeb. Phil and Joyce were the perfect hosts; they showed us the property, recommended the best places to visit, ensured we were comfortable, and made themselves available for whatever we might need. The cottage itself was clean and comfortable; perfect for a relaxing long weekend.

One thing to watch is that the cottage does not have air conditioning. We found this to be a non-issue on our warm but mild late June weekend. The place stays cool naturalyl due to plentiful shade and opening windows, and we noticed the cottage was stocked with plenty of fans as well.

All in all we had a wonderful stay. Phil and Joyce were a delight and so was their cottage. If we find ourselves in the region again we will surely be back.
