Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, 2 person romantic getaway

Clarance Gonstead Guest Cottage was built for the world renowned chiropractor in 1952 by Architect, Herb Fritz Jr. in the Prairie Style of architecture made popular by Herb's Mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright. The cottage is centrally located in town on two acres and separated from the main house. The exterior is clad in clay tile and lanon stone and the interior finishes are stone and tide water cypress walls with quarry tile and carpet floors.

The hilly local terrain, abandoned level rail road trails and off road trails in the state park provide opportunity for all levels of biking enthusiasts. Mount Horeb has an 18 hole golf course, public pool and almost weekly organized events within walking distance. The radiant floor heating system and the proximity to down hill and cross country trails make an ideal winter retreat, unfortunately we have had to fall in line with all the other inns and discontinue use of the wood burning fireplace to satisfy insurance restrictions so we installed a 4K television with a sound bar that provides the visual and auditory ambience of a variety of wood burning fire places and the floor provides the heat. You also have the flexibility of watching a movie on an internet TV.

About Joyce Wall

I am a retired Architect and my wife is a retired 4th grade public school teacher and we are both on to our second and third retirement jobs.

Joyce Wall purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Joyce Wall chose Mount Horeb

We purchased the property because of the mature landscape and to prevent the landmark with it's historical connection to both Frank Lloyd Wright and Clarence Gonstead, from becoming 6 lots in a planned subdivision.

My wife walked across the street through the baseball diamond to work and I worked out of my home office for years so it was a good fit while raising kids.

What makes this cottage unique

Winter sunrise through the large sheets of glass, casts shadows on the field dressed lanon stone walls and reflects a warm tone off the low cypress ceilings. The radiantly heated floor and Music served up from an Ipod and played though the vintage stereo together with convenient proximity to down hill, cross country, skating and snow shoeing makes it a great romantic getaway for more energetic guests.

In the summer, the well placed mature landscaping provides cool shade and the thermal mass provides natural air conditioning so you can enjoy the interior environment or relax in a hammock under the filtered light of a mountain ash.

The proximity to Main Street and the Bike trail means that you can leave your car parked in the driveway to enjoy the Quaint downtown and traditional residential urban planning of the old town where sidewalks are not interrupted by driveways and garages are on the alley. Downtown is now home to the Duluth Trading Company and numerous art galleries with both traditional and European choices in dining. Locally brewed beers and wines offer more reasons to extend your stay.

Beautiful Winter Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Wisconsin winters can be long and cold, so when I saw that Mount Horeb had a winter festival (the Scandihoovian Winter Festival, to be exact!) I figured my husband and I could plan a weekend retreat to enjoy the festivities. I chose the Gonstead guest cottage because it was a convenient walk to many of the Scandihoovian festivities - but soon after we arrived, I realized staying at the cottage was a treat in and of itself! The in-floor heating was a delight to return to after wandering around in snowy weather, the architecture was stunning, and everything about our stay was wonderful (not much beats curling up on a couch with a blanket to watch the snow fall)!

Joyce and Phil were delightful hosts - Joyce hurried over when we arrived to give us a quick intro to the cottage, point out a towel we could use to wipe off our snowy boots, and recommend some great places for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had a great time alternating between outdoor festivities (including frozen turkey bowling!) and returning to the cottage to relax and warm back up. If time allows, we'll have to come back in the summer - the property was beautiful in the snow, and I'm so, so glad we were able to stay there.

Charming and comfortable cottage - welcoming hosts

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we pulled in, Joyce and Phil went out of the way to make us feel comfortable at the cottage and sharing a bit of its history. There is plenty of space and it is quite private from the main house. The kitchen is well-equipped and everything in the cottage works properly. We lounged in both the main room and the gallery room and enjoyed the comfortable furniture and variation in light at different times of day. The heated floors were such a treat and delivered such nice even heat at all times even though it was quite cold outside.

Following the snowfall on Saturday night, not only was the driveway cleared promptly, the hosts also cleaned the snow off of our car. Just one of those small touches that made this such a great and effortless stay!

A unique and truly one of a kind cottage...

  • 5 of 5

First, let me say that Joyce and Phil were welcoming and genuinely caring people with a love for this property and a desire to ensure we had a pleasant experience. In 10 minutes we felt as if we had been friends for a long time! The property is truly one of a kind. From the unique architecture to the heated floors to the design of the layout it is out of the ordinary and will be something we'll talk about and remember for a long time. We felt private and secure all weekend in the cottage and hope to return in the future! A truly unique place that kind of takes you back in time yet offers the comforts of today...very special!

Winter getaway

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay even though it wound up being bitterly cold when we were there which was disappointing. Phil and Joyce were wonderful and made us feel very welcomed. Everything was as expected.

Owner's Response: Just to clarify: the weather was cold but the cottage is cozy warm with radiant heated floors . Another past response was "We were thrilled to be snow bound in such a relaxing, cozy, and beautiful setting." Watch a movie, listen to music, read a book or veg at the scenery out the windows. Six blocks from the center of town, everything is within walking distance, no matter how high the drifts get. We have sledding , down hill, excelent cross country skiing, snow shoeing and snow mobile trails all between 4 blocks and 7 miles if cold is your thing.
