HOME RUN is a large, kid and pet-friendly ski chalet 99 steps from the final ' Home Run' back to the village; truly, a pristine ski-in and ski-out environment. It stays pristine because vehicles cannot reach the homes above the village as we are snowed in for most of the winter. (A SUNSET magazine article described Bear Valley as the holder of the one month US snowfall record-37 feet!)

Therefore, alternative transportation such as a snowmobile ( taxi and rentals @ Bear Valley Snowmobile 209-753-2323 ) can be provided. You can walk, snowshoe and ski everywhere-we're just a mile from the lodge. Don't worry, this only adds to the adventure and kids love it.

This newly updated home is perfect for two families. The upstairs bedroom has a new queen bed and the loft has a newish fold-out couch and futon. This floor is situated so that it enjoys spectacular morning color. The first floor bedroom has a new king bed and attached tile bath with radiant heat. There is a good queen fold out couch for groups. The dining table seats ten. There is no television service at HOME RUN, but there is a SLING BOX, a ROKU home theater with NETFLIX, et al , a piano, a fireplace, a nice view and more stars than you've ever seen. It is in one of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC's Dark Spots (AUG '08).

Many of our guests prefer the warmer seasons-colorful SPRING wildflowers on our creek, the golden aspens of AUTUMN and the splendor of a perfect BV SUMMER during our annual Music Festival. We are just a 5 minute walk to the LAKE. After a full day of activities perhaps enjoy a local fine wine in the private all-season hot tub. It is on 1300 square feet of decking and provides the setting for a stunning alpenglow experience.

Those who love Bear Valley for its solitude also appreciate the ease of the journey. There are no mountain passes to traverse hence no avalanche closures. Just straight up uncrowded Hwy. 4 from Murphys through the foothill's wine country. Only 30 snow miles-4,000-8,000' to the summit near Ebbetts Pass. This wide US SCENIC BYWAY , HWY 4 is always open with two Cal- Trans stations in the half hour drive. This is the closest ski resort to the Bay Area and definitely the easiest to travel.

The summer presents an even more magnificent approach from the east, if you are so inclined. If you have never exited Yosemite or Tahoe and come to BV over Monitor and Ebbetts Passes...well, do it.

Feel free to stop at Val du Vino winery in Murphys and receive our discount.

*** Please open the attached US SCENIC BYWAY link if you have further interest in this extraordinary wilderness area @ www.scenic4.org ***

This is a tight, cozy ski chalet on a ridge above Bear Valley Village and as Lloyd Bridges once said in a TV piece..'Bear Valley is the hidden treasure of the Sierra.'

*** The color is on ***

Seasonal and week long discounts are available.

Even though there have been many upgrades, we have not raised prices in years, enjoy!

About Terry

Although we live in Monterey, Bear Valley is our much- beloved sanctuary.

Terry

Terry purchased this chalet in 1990

Why Terry chose Bear Valley

My brother and I were skiing the central Sierra in the late 80's and never left. The idea of being in a Wilderness area at this altitude in a town of 125 people but with full amenities was extremely compelling.

What makes this chalet unique

Cozy mountain escape

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this property multiple times and love the cozy classic A-frame design. It is just the right size for our family of four. The owner - Terry - has always been very easy to work with on scheduling, directions, and any minor issues that have come up. The cabin has a great homey feel and includes all the basic necessities plus some nice extras.

BV is a wonderful mountain escape. It is fairly isolated (especially in the winter) but that is what makes it so great. Go outside at night - it is totally quiet and you can see maybe 3 other lights on - really gives you that true reprieve from daily life. Being remote everything moves a a different pace, just what we want and need - a chance to slow down and enjoy the beauty around us.

Comfortable sociable cabin with reservations-see below

  • 2 of 5

Arrived at unlocked cabin at 4 pm. Good it was unlocked as we could not find key where described as hidden. Three messages via VRBO site and one voice mail that day went unanswered. Msgs left for owner also advised no Internet as ATT left new modem & we couldn't connect as we were missing owner account & pw info. Also no firewood was there although owner indicated a delivery was to be made. Also upstairs bed clearly had not been freshly made as top sheet scrunched way down to bottom of bed. Finally received 1 msg early Saturday that only asked if modem was there; clearly my earlier msgs not read? Made another call to owner phone and left another complete voice mail. Went for hike and had to leave cabin unlocked. Second msg received via vrbo mobile re: key with promise that someone would drop off key. That did not happen. Owner is clearly not available as emergency contact and if there is a local person, they are not either. Quick summary before I get pickier: no key, linen not clean on one bed, no Internet or firewood as promised and owner/local contact not available.

Pickier: owner advised a contractor would be working on deck. No children were with us but if there were, they would not have been allowed on deck as parts of railings are clearly unsafe. Written instructions from owner consist of 2 scribbled and torn pieces of paper with info lined out. Every other rental I have been in has taken a more thorough approach. Finally, this was the mountains - where were emergency candles and flashlights? One flashlight with no batteries and a couple mostly used tiny votive candles are insufficient if the power goes out.

I hate to be so negative as the cabin is actually nicely set-up but this wasn't a no cost arrangement. We paid an agreed upon fee on a cabin advertised as having Internet and firewood and one would assume a key, clean linen, and someone whom you could contact if there were problems. Frankly this was a first for me and I have used VRBO before as well as agencies.

Not worth the money

  • 1 of 5

This house would be great, if it was kept up better. The porch is falling apart rusty nails and all, there's junk surrounding the porch on the property, the outside table collapses, and there was garbage left in the corner and trash bins for our arrival.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry things were off for you. We are all scrambling to get last winter's repairs done before the new snows. ( The pass only opened on the 4th of July weekend) I don't know how to comment on trash-all was good the weekend before.

Perfect Location, Wonderful Memories!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time while staying in this cabin. On our arrival day, June 11 it snowed in Bear Valley, like in winter. And our summer vacation quickly turned into a winter vacation. It was amazing and a great surprise for all of us. Homeowner Terry reached out to us a few times, to make sure everything was OK. Needles to say, cabin had everything.

We fell in love on location. If you are looking for a beautiful and peaceful place to relax and unwind from your day-to-day busy schedule, Bear Valley is the place to be. We will definitely be back soon.
