About Ginger Power

We live in Virginia Beach and work full time so enjoy a quick getaway to the shore

Ginger Power purchased this house in 2003

Why Ginger Power chose Virginia

We fell in love with the beauty and nature of the area. It is a true Shore Escape! You will see many birds, deer and can gaze at the stars at night!

What makes this house unique

Shore Escape is in a small private community that overlooks Kegotank Bay, Assawoman & Metomptkin barrier islands & the Atlantic Ocean. You can see Wallops Island from the property, where they launch rockets, including supplies to the International Space Station. Perfection from the back routes, to the scenery, to the wine, to the kayaks, to the private island trip, the travelers' notes in the diary on the kitchen counter....

My 5 year old fit perfectly with my husband in the 2 seater kayak and the other 2 kids each had their own kayak. Trip to Onancock was only 15 minutes and 25 minutes to Chincoteague.

Wonderful memories made in our short trip!!!! The kids and I enjoyed shell picking on the nearby Island. My husband and I enjoyed relaxing with a bottle of wine and some music in the evening. The beds were super comfy! I can't say enough wonderful things about Ginger's home! We will return!

A break from "normal"

  • 4 of 5

The house was beautiful and well maintained. It was nice to be close enough to things to do and far enough away to provide much needed downtime and recharging for our small children. Lots of wildlife to watch! The kayaks were great to take out for the day on an adventure. The owner was wonderful to work with. Overall a great experience and I'd recommend it for a get away from normal. Next time I may leave the kids at home and bring a few grown up friends instead!

Peace and Quiet

  • 4 of 5

Peace and Quiet if thats what you need this is the place for you.No need to bring anything but your clothes this home has everything, fully stocked kitchen, movies an awesome music collection, towels ,linens, kayaks a charcoal grill everything.Need a car to fully enjoy the area, short 25 minute ride to Chincoteague National Wild Life Refuge where there is a nice beach but get there early because it fills up very fast. The town of Chincoteague is quaint with restaurants and many gift shops. Also in the town of Ononcock there is a ferry that will take you to the small fishing village of Tangier Island for a small fee.Great picture opportunities on that trip. You will probably see more wildlife at the cottage than at the wild life refuge. We saw on a daily basis deer with their fawns a Bald Eagle numerous Geese and Turtles, one actually dug a whole and layed its eggs at the side of the house that was pretty cool.At nigft we would sit on the porch open the windows and be serenaded by the marsh wildlife. All in all its a great place for quiet and relaxation.Air conditioned clean and tastefully decorated.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much, R&L, for the wonderful review. It is worth 5 stars to us! We do take pride in offering a very clean Shore Escape with local art, nice furnishings & loads of entertainment along with all the wonderful nature you described so well! I would like to add that there are also beautiful pristine beaches on the barrier islands in front of the cottage that you can kayak to for a fun & peaceful nature adventure. In addition to the ferry in Onancock, our favorite little town on the shore, there are a good selection of restaurants, galleries and shops away from the tourist scene with a local flair. We appreciate your 2 week visit and hope that you come back to enjoy the "Peace and Quiet" very soon! Ginger

Owner's Response: Thanks so much Joe, for taking time to send a review! Yes, Shore Escape is indeed a perfect location to explore the shore and while "at home", enjoy the beautiful waterfront views of Kegotank Bay and waves from the ocean crashing on the barrier islands as well as abundant wildlife. My housekeeper really appreciated Michelle doing the laundry as well! You are welcome guests anytime!

Quiet getaway with lots of extras!

  • 4 of 5

The house was beautiful and roomy and stocked with just about anything you might forget to bring with you on vacation (shampoo, condiments, laundry detergent, gear for the beach, etc...).

We had a senior, teenage boys and a dog and everyone had their own space. The sunroom was perfect for watching all the deer that came along throughout the day as well as the big full moon that came out on our last night - it lit up the water beautifully! You're not too far from the grocery store or a few restaurants. There is access to the water for kayaks/boat just down the road and taking a walk with the dog was easy with hardly any traffic. You are close to a couple of museums and Wallops Island (which you can also see when you look northeast).

If you like wine, the house has its own little stock of wines from which you can choose one and leave one. You are also close to a couple of wineries and there are plenty of glasses and a decent corkscrew.

The kitchen was setup nicely to use, complete with electric stove, microwave and coffee maker (didn't even use the grill outside). We cooked just about every meal. There are plenty of pots, pans, dishes, utensils and also serving bowls, cutting boards and placemats. The dining table seats 6 but we added a couple of chairs and made it work for 8. There was no disposal but it was great to have the dishwasher.

I only have a couple of things I didn't like:

(1) The downstairs "rec room" is accessed by a spiral staircase; I wouldn't recommend for small children or seniors. The steps are pretty steep and are just plain wood with no tread. If you want to gather everyone for a movie it makes it a little challenging because there is no TV on the main level (but they do have a great collection of CDs and a nice CD player!).

(2) There are no ceiling fans so at night the queen bedroom would get a little stuffy with the door shut.

(3) The sunroom is nothing but sun - there are no shades on the windows in case you want to have a little protection from the sun. Great views and you wouldn't want to block them all the time, but it would have been nice to have the option.

Overall, I would recommend this property. It was clean, spacious, had lots of extras if you needed them and it was remote without being too remote. Older kids can enjoy the downstairs while the adults enjoy the upstairs and seniors can still manage on the upper level. Might not be appropriate for really young children because of the steps.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the nice review! We take pride at Shore Escape to provide many extras to make our guests comfortable. The location is indeed ideal for exploring the whole Eastern Shore and its location right next to Wallops Island provides a perfect view of the launch pad for that rare opportunity to witness a rocket launch. I traveled the two hours yesterday, July 13th to take supplies AND see Antares take supplies the International Space Station. WOW! We do cater mostly to couples (romantic) and small families, normally with a maximum of 6 (3 beds). I felt comfortable with two extra teens sleeping on a blow up bed downstairs (provided). Pets are not allowed unless a rare exception is made as in this case with a very responsible owner! She vacuumed up any sheds each day and kept her in a crate of gone. Our guests LOVE the spiral staircase! Shore Escape is not child proof or wheel chair accessible. We have had many small children and seniors over the years with no issues. There are two gates to block the stairs and there is an outdoor entrance to the downstairs entertainment area should someone need to enter that way. We just completely gutted and rebuilt the beautiful sunroom with big windows in May, 2013 to let more sunshine in and enhance the beautiful view of wildlife, marsh, Kegotank Bay, barrier islands and the ocean! There are options of shades in other rooms and great AC to stay cool. I appreciate your stay and hope you choose Shore Escape for your vacation again soon! Ginger, owner

Fun Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Shore Escape offers the best in outdoor family fun and indoor creature comfort. Its easy access to the water enables great crabbing, kayaking and "shelling" on a fantastic private beach. Within minutes of Chincoteague, you can enjoy great restaurants, shopping and the well-maintained Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge offers a great beach for family fun in the sun, outstanding wildlife photo opportunities, biking, hiking and more! We especially enjoyed returning to Shore Escape with its panoramic view; climate controlled, clean and stylish living spaces; and serene and spacious outdoor lawn. From beach towels to binoculars, the owners have thought of everything! Thank you for sharing this truly exceptional getaway!
