About Deb Hulst

I was raised on Hamlin Lake and have always loved it here. Our family came to the cottage for every family vacation, enjoying the wildlife, fishing, swimming, walks in the woods, climbing trees, feeding the swans, enjoying a glass of wine by the fire, and the list goes on and on. Now it is time to share this with others. We moved to the lake in 2000 and now live on the property year round. Your cottage is approximately 200' from the lakeshore.

Deb Hulst purchased this cottage in 1930

Why Deb Hulst chose Michigan

Grandma and Grandpa wanted to get out of the City of Chicago in the 1930's. They summered on the North Shore of Upper Hamlin Lake several times and realized that this is where they wanted to live. When this property became available in the 1930's they jumped on it. We added the vacation rental in 2005, only beginning the rental of it in the spring of 2009.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy watching the hummingbirds in the morning, sitting on the front porch with our cup of coffee. The lake always offers beauty and entertainment, whether it be fishing, boating, skiing, tubing, or just riding in the pontoon boat to the dunes. Living on the lake year round is awesome. All seasons are fun and exciting! Snowmobiling right out our backdoor....who could ask for more! We take our winter vacation in places where it is warm, but the sunsets never come close to the beautiful colors right here in Michigan. Icefishing, too, is great on Hamlin Lake!

Quiet, clean and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the shadows. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. The setting was quiet with a nice view of the lake. Thanks Deb for making our stay at the shadows something we will look back at with fond memories.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you had a quiet few days at our cottage. Even though it was rainy and cool, it was great for reading and watching the lake. Hope next time the weather is more cooperative!

This was our third year at the Shadows and was a wonderful week. The weather really cooperated this year. No rain for the first five days and the fishing was great. The cabin, like the two years prior, was clean and comfortable and always peaceful surroundings. Deb and Mark are never intrusive but available if you need them. Enjoyed talking to Deb and Mark about fishing and the plants around the cabins. Saw some deer wondering around and I just know they were eyeing Deb's plants for an evening snack. My only suggestion would be to put a small table next to the loveseat to set a phone, book or drink on. We hope to see you again next year.

Very nice stay at The Shadows on Hamlin Lake

  • 4 of 5

The Shadows was very clean and seemed new. Quiet, peaceful and it was more than what we were expecting. Close to trails and dunes. The only thing we would recommend is to update the directions and also advise people that 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive is recommended to get there in summer as well. We were prepared in this aspect, but someone that doesn't know better about travel in northern Michigan might have some trouble. When it rained, the 5 miles of main road that the cabin is off of became pretty dicey...there were deep tire tracks to navigate in and/or around and the shoulders become even softer as the road is mainly sand with gravel on top.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your revuew. We always recommend that people use the directions that we provide on the site, not depending on GPS or other directions as they most always misdirects people. Yes, the road was terrible! The county road commission has been working on improving it due to the people using the road to access all the trails and lake michigan. If it hadn't rained, it would have been great! Thanks for your recommendations. We hope you still enjoyed your stay in northern michigan woods.

Wonderful Location

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for all the personal touches provided in your cottage. It was secluded enough, but just right for our day trips (shopping, visiting friends, & enjoying all the colors fall had to offer). It was a wonderful "sister's get away".

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your Tay the our cottage. The location is private and picturesque but also half way between ludington and manistee for shopping or visiting both port cities for breathtaking sunsets over lake michigan. Being in the national forest also gives you plenty of opportunities to see wildlife and lots of trees and other beautiful scenery. LOOKING forward to your next visit
