About Deb Hulst
I was raised on Hamlin Lake and have always loved it here. Our family came to the cottage for every family vacation, enjoying the wildlife, fishing, swimming, walks in the woods, climbing trees, feeding the swans, enjoying a glass of wine by the fire, and the list goes on and on. Now it is time to share this with others. We moved to the lake in 2000 and now live on the property year round. Your cottage is approximately 200' from the lakeshore.
Deb Hulst purchased this Cottage in 1930
Why Deb Hulst chose Free Soil
Grandma and Grandpa wanted to get out of the City of Chicago in the 1930's. They summered on the North Shore of Upper Hamlin Lake several times and realized that this is where they wanted to live. When this property became available in the 1930's they jumped on it. We added the vacation rental in 2005, only beginning the rental of it in the spring of 2009.
What makes this Cottage unique
We enjoy watching the hummingbirds in the morning, sitting on the front porch with our cup of coffee. The lake always offers beauty and entertainment, whether it be fishing, boating, skiing, tubing, or just riding in the pontoon boat to the dunes. Living on the lake year round is awesome. All seasons are fun and exciting! Snowmobiling right out our backdoor....who could ask for more! We take our winter vacation in places where it is warm, but the sunsets never come close to the beautiful colors right here in Michigan. Icefishing, too, is great on Hamlin Lake!

Very clean and owners very accommodating.
We enjoyed our stay. Beautiful view of lake.
So glad you enjoyed your stay. Spring in michigan is never predictable weather wise. Always nice to have a campfire and fish, just can't say fish will bite, but anytime spent by the lake is good time!
The cottage was comfortable and very clean. Deb and Mark were amazing! Highly recommend!!
We enjoyed our spring break with Deb and Mark at the Shadows cottage. We got a little more that we expected weather-wise as we drove into a snow storm. Deb was kind enough to contact us in regards to the weather so we were more prepared. Then, when we got 8 inches of snow on our first night, Deb checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed and Mark plowed the whole driveway so that we were able to get out in our little Honda Civic. The gravel road was a little dicey, but we managed. When I emailed Deb in regards to the road she was so quick to respond. We hope to stay at The Shadows again and would highly recommend it to anyone!!! But, check the weather and with Deb about the gravel road if you don't have a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
So glad you enjoyed your stay at our cottage, even with the famous michigan ever changing, unpredictable weather! And your little car did fine! Must have been the skill of the driver😆 maybe next time will be more cooperative and you can do more hiking and exploring of the forest and lake trails. Of course, you will a little extra person soon to tote along! Hope to see you all again.
A Hidden National Forest Retreat!
The property is situated deep in the National Forest right on the shore of Hamlin Lake; perfect for a weekend fishing getaway. The property was very clean and Deb & Mark were great hosts. It was a great experience!
Glad you enjoyed your time with friends at our cottage. We rake pride in the cleanliness of the property and keep it well maintained. Glad you appreciate that too! Hope too see you again
Peaceful retreat with a beautiful sunset! Very clean and comfortable!
Deb was very accommodating, allowing us to arrive a bit early for the day. We had a really nice stay. All the dishware we needed was provided which was great. The porch on the lakeside was the perfect place for morning coffee or late night drinks. Fire ring by the water looked great, next time we will make time to actually use it! If you like hiking there are nice dune trails down to the beach just a short trip down the road too!
We are happy to accommodate early arrival whenever possible. It was a great day for hiking before the weather changed. Yes, next time hope you can enjoy a fire by the lake. It is so relaxing and beautiful to be by the water, have fire, eat smores, listen to the forest creatures and more. Hope to see you again .
Beautiful and Relaxing Location
The cabin was cute and clean. Deb was fantastic! The lake is clear and beautiful, we even caught a few bass and sunfish! We will definitely be back! Don't listen to Google Maps, once you get to Pleasant Hill Rd, take the first drive on the left and look for the 5663 sign on the tree. You will LOVE your stay! Thank you!
We are always so happy when people enjoy the woods and lake as much as we do! Catching fish is a bonus. We are aware the gps, google, etc., may misdirects you. This is why we urge people to use the directions we provide and to arrive in daylight hours. But you made it despite google! Next time you will know the way!!
Quiet, clean and peaceful
We really enjoyed our stay at the shadows. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. The setting was quiet with a nice view of the lake. Thanks Deb for making our stay at the shadows something we will look back at with fond memories.
We are so glad you had a quiet few days at our cottage. Even though it was rainy and cool, it was great for reading and watching the lake. Hope next time the weather is more cooperative!
Morrell Mushroom hunting, Little River Casino, snowshoeing, icefishing, 2 firepits.
