SNOW, SNOW, SNOW!!! Come enjoy our cottage nestled in the Manistee National Forest on the north shore, sunny side, of upper Hamlin Lake. The cottage is only 8 years old with like new furnishings and is very neat and CLEAN. You will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire upper lake and awesome sunsets over the dunes right from shore. Icefishing is great right out in front of the cottage. Snowmobiling out your back door is also possible. Skiing, hiking, wine tasting, wildlife viewing and other fun activities are waiting just for you! There is also a lakeside firepit for your enjoyment on those cold winter nights and lots of stars to see. Lake Michigan is minutes away for even more fall and wintertime adventures. Or, for those who like more physical activity, bring your cross country skis for the miles of trails in the National Forest. If you would like or are ready for peaceful, quiet surroundings, this is the place for you. It is so quiet here in the winter, you can hear the snow landing on your head! This cottage sleeps 5, at least 16 years old, and is fully equipped for your every need. It all awaits you at The Shadows on Hamlin Lake. We live on the property, adjacent to this cottage which is approximately 200 feet from the waters edge.

About Deb Hulst

I was raised on Hamlin Lake and have always loved it here. Our family came to the cottage for every family vacation, enjoying the wildlife, fishing, swimming, walks in the woods, climbing trees, feeding the swans, enjoying a glass of wine by the fire, and the list goes on and on. Now it is time to share this with others. We moved to the lake in 2000 and now live on the property year round. Your cottage is approximately 200' from the lakeshore.

Deb Hulst purchased this cottage in 1930

Why Deb Hulst chose Free Soil

Grandma and Grandpa wanted to get out of the City of Chicago in the 1930's. They summered on the North Shore of Upper Hamlin Lake several times and realized that this is where they wanted to live. When this property became available in the 1930's they jumped on it. We added the vacation rental in 2005, only beginning the rental of it in the spring of 2009.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy watching the hummingbirds in the morning, sitting on the front porch with our cup of coffee. The lake always offers beauty and entertainment, whether it be fishing, boating, skiing, tubing, or just riding in the pontoon boat to the dunes. Living on the lake year round is awesome. All seasons are fun and exciting! Snowmobiling right out our backdoor....who could ask for more! We take our winter vacation in places where it is warm, but the sunsets never come close to the beautiful colors right here in Michigan. Icefishing, too, is great on Hamlin Lake!

Peaceful retreat with a beautiful sunset! Very clean and comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

Deb was very accommodating, allowing us to arrive a bit early for the day. We had a really nice stay. All the dishware we needed was provided which was great. The porch on the lakeside was the perfect place for morning coffee or late night drinks. Fire ring by the water looked great, next time we will make time to actually use it! If you like hiking there are nice dune trails down to the beach just a short trip down the road too!

Owner's Response: We are happy to accommodate early arrival whenever possible. It was a great day for hiking before the weather changed. Yes, next time hope you can enjoy a fire by the lake. It is so relaxing and beautiful to be by the water, have fire, eat smores, listen to the forest creatures and more. Hope to see you again .

Beautiful and Relaxing Location

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was cute and clean. Deb was fantastic! The lake is clear and beautiful, we even caught a few bass and sunfish! We will definitely be back! Don't listen to Google Maps, once you get to Pleasant Hill Rd, take the first drive on the left and look for the 5663 sign on the tree. You will LOVE your stay! Thank you!

Owner's Response: We are always so happy when people enjoy the woods and lake as much as we do! Catching fish is a bonus. We are aware the gps, google, etc., may misdirects you. This is why we urge people to use the directions we provide and to arrive in daylight hours. But you made it despite google! Next time you will know the way!!

Quiet, clean and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the shadows. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. The setting was quiet with a nice view of the lake. Thanks Deb for making our stay at the shadows something we will look back at with fond memories.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you had a quiet few days at our cottage. Even though it was rainy and cool, it was great for reading and watching the lake. Hope next time the weather is more cooperative!

This was our third year at the Shadows and was a wonderful week. The weather really cooperated this year. No rain for the first five days and the fishing was great. The cabin, like the two years prior, was clean and comfortable and always peaceful surroundings. Deb and Mark are never intrusive but available if you need them. Enjoyed talking to Deb and Mark about fishing and the plants around the cabins. Saw some deer wondering around and I just know they were eyeing Deb's plants for an evening snack. My only suggestion would be to put a small table next to the loveseat to set a phone, book or drink on. We hope to see you again next year.

Very nice stay at The Shadows on Hamlin Lake

  • 4 of 5

The Shadows was very clean and seemed new. Quiet, peaceful and it was more than what we were expecting. Close to trails and dunes. The only thing we would recommend is to update the directions and also advise people that 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive is recommended to get there in summer as well. We were prepared in this aspect, but someone that doesn't know better about travel in northern Michigan might have some trouble. When it rained, the 5 miles of main road that the cabin is off of became pretty dicey...there were deep tire tracks to navigate in and/or around and the shoulders become even softer as the road is mainly sand with gravel on top.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your revuew. We always recommend that people use the directions that we provide on the site, not depending on GPS or other directions as they most always misdirects people. Yes, the road was terrible! The county road commission has been working on improving it due to the people using the road to access all the trails and lake michigan. If it hadn't rained, it would have been great! Thanks for your recommendations. We hope you still enjoyed your stay in northern michigan woods.
