A Charming Visit to Hood River

  • 5 of 5

My family, of a variety of ages, was very comfortable in this home in Hood River. It was a joy to fix meals and visit with each other with a view of the river. Having separate sleeping areas with a bathroom on each level was perfect for us. The bungalow decor made us feel very cozy.

Hood River Gem

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming back to this house for many years now, and look forward to it every year! The property is well maintained; has a well provisioned kitchen for cooking; and comfy, quiet rooms, for a great nights sleep.

A signature amenity is the outdoor shower! After a long day of mountain biking, enjoying the outdoors, with a view of the Columbia and mountains beyond, is a perfect way to end the day!

The house is on a quiet street, but a short walk to the center of town. It's base to explore all that Hood River has to offer!

Beautiful home in Hood River!

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for the 5 of us to stay in while in town for a family wedding. My husband and I had the upstairs bedroom, and the other three all had their own rooms and bathrooms on the other two levels. The furnishings were lovely, the beauty and view of the Columbia River was breathtaking, and the close proximity to town for shopping/restaurants was an easy stroll. The originally planned day after wedding brunch was cancelled, and this home was comfortably large enough to host the brunch (my husband has 8 siblings and numerous nieces & nephews who all stopped in and some were even a bit envious that we had such great accommodations!). We enjoyed a few fresh tomatoes from the vines in the garden on the expansive lawns. My husband especially enjoyed his view and coffee from the outdoor shower! We hope to have the opportunity to stay in this home again. We highly recommend this home. Thank you, Elizabeth!

Good Value and Great Location

  • 4 of 5

The Columbia House was a nice place to stay while visiting the Gorge and Mt. Hood scenic areas with friends from out of town. The location is excellent -- you can walk almost anywhere for shopping, restaurants, and evening entertainment. Safeway is less than a mile away and walk or bike-able. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could need including basic spices and condiments. All appliances and equipment are in good working order. The house is clean and with comfortable furniture, nice linens, and mattresses. BBQ outside is very nice. Attractive landscaping and general care is evident. The house is in excellent condition.

There are also plenty of nooks, porches, and levels for individuals in larger groups to have privacy or come together for meals and social time.

Having said all that, there are two points our group felt were important to make. First, two of the four bedrooms (sleeping 3 of the 8) are in the basement. This was not clear from the description and only hinted at with the photos. The basement is not finished and smells damp even during a very hot summer. Not moldy, just musty. One bedroom with a double bed is unfinished with exposed pipes that bang away when water is being used, a very low ceiling, and no window or form of ventilation. No one would consider this space a bedroom, although it is furnished like one. It is really just storage space. The other basement bedroom with the trundle is very tiny with a small window at street level that looks out to the tires in the driveway. It is finished, but not very pleasant and very noisy. The basement bathroom is finished and nice. This is the other full bath in the house, the other being on the 2nd floor. The deck off the basement is nice as well for a view of the garden and river. Just keep in mind with larger groups over 3-4 that several will be stuck in this area. There appears to be another bedroom on the second floor, but for some reason it was locked and "off limits".

The second issue we had was the noise from I84. Because of the proximity to the freeway, there is a constant background sound that can be very loud while on the back deck and also from the open bedroom windows. There were times when the train and trucks combined to roar us right out of our conversation, and we are a loud city group used to urban noise.

With these caveats in mind, we felt the good far overcame the bad, but we wanted others booking houses to be aware.

The Perfect Place

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for 1 week in August 2010 while in Hood River for our daughters wedding. The location was perfect, close enough to walk to the downtown area or restaurants. We used the house as a central gathering spot for all the out-of-towners and a place to relax. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed and then some. We loved the outside shower. There was even a small garden that we allowed to help ourselves to the tomatoes and herbs. The deck across the back looks out toward the Cloumbia River and was a perfect place to drink coffee in the morning or enjoy the cool evenings. Thanks Elizabeth!
