About this property

Lake Austin Waterfront Retreat - Hot Tub, SUP, WiFi, Dogs Welcome

WE ARE TAKING EXTRA PRECAUTIONS DISINFECTING OUR HOUSE IN LIGHT OF THE COVID-19 VIRUS.

Lake Austin waterfront is a great place to escape all year around. Lake Austin Retreat offers a beautiful Mexican style waterfront property with a boat dock, huge decks and a hot tub situated on a secluded bend of Lake Austin just 20 miles from downtown Austin. Relax, unwind, enjoy the stand up paddle boards, swim, canoe, kayak, bird-watch, fish, or enjoy a spa-treatment at nearby Lake Austin Spa.

The house accommodates 6 guests (if your group is larger than 6, please consider renting a neighbor's property which sleep's 6, in addition to ours - Homeaway Property # 7064882 or VRBO#3580000), and the spacious back yard offers an abundance of outdoor space for socializing, BBQ'n, playing or enjoying quiet hammock-time. Bring your boat and ski (boats can be moored at the dock but no boat lift is available), or lounge by the water's edge and drink in the view of the Golden Cheeked-Warbler habitat directly across the lake. You will love taking advantage of the most peaceful stretch of Lake Austin. Mornings are not to be missed. Grab your coffee or tea and watch the morning fog pull back revealing a glass-like surface that mirrors the rolling hills above. Just 35 Miles from the new F-1 Track in Austin, 20 miles from SXSW and ACL Festival.

The Activities: By Day - Canoeing, kayaking (life jackets and paddles provided), hiking, swimming, fishing, golfing, skiing and wakeboarding, bring your boat and moor it at the dock. You can canoe, kayak or walk 1/4 mile to the Lake Austin Spa for world-class spa services.

By Night - Dining, grilling, star-gazing or hitting the downtown or lakeside Austin nightlife.

Out of respect for our neighbors, we ask that only three cars be parked at our home and that our guests not use the HOA Boat Ramp and Park next door. The public boat ramp at Mary Quinlan Park is only 1/4 mile away and is much safer. There is also additional parking there for guests temporarily visiting during your stay.

In keeping with the local ordinances, we have a strict policy that forbids parties at our home.

This little house was located on "On the Lake Road" in Lake Austin Village. This older home was perfect for a get-away weekend. Inside, the rooms were comfortable, the kitchen well-stocked and the one bathroom was updated. The back porch has a jacuzzi, and the top deck on the dock had perfect views of the Colorado river and sunset every night. The backyard is fenced so kids & pups can play. There is easy access to the water with plenty of things to do including kayaks, paddleboards and other toys to enjoy the waterfront. The dock gives easy access for loading & unloading onto a boat. On this weekend, there were neighbor's boats in the 2 dock slips and thus, not available to store our boat at the dock overnight. We launched our boat off the trailer each day. Luckily, the Quinlan Park public boat ramp was only a few blocks away. Quick note on the driveway... it is tight and there are cars that park along the road in front of the house which made backing a boat trailer into the driveway challenging. Be sure to arrive during the day so you have good light to manage the driveway, if you have a trailer. Lake Austin was a busy place on the weekend, and there were boats up & down the river all day. The water and the lake front properties were absolutely beautiful. All in all, this was a perfect way to end the summer on a boat and at the lake. Thank you, David, you were an awesome host.

We’re repeat guests at Lake Austin Waterfront Retreat and it continues to exceed expectations. The property has a magical, peaceful vibe that makes it hard to leave. My wife and I brought our boat and enjoyed several perfect days on one of the most beautiful rivers in Texas. The private dock is ideal—easy to access, secure, and perfect for both relaxing and launching. We also loved using the kayaks and canoes provided, and hosted a few unforgettable evenings with friends and family on the spacious, scenic grounds. Everything about this place is thoughtful and welcoming. We’re already looking forward to our next stay.

Wonderful Spot!

Beautiful spot on Lake Austin. Paddle boards, canoes and kayaks were provided. Property was clean. Plenty of towels were provided which is nice since we swam in the lake and took advantage of the hot tub at night. Check in/check out was super easy. Perfect for a weekend getaway.

Trip was OK

Great location on quiet side of lake. Older house, but in decent shape. AC went out first night we were there. Host was easy to get in touch with and had someone out the following morning to fix. Luckily it was cool that night so wasn’t too bad of an experience. The last day we were there a group of guys unexpectedly showed up to fix the boat lift. That put a dent in our final few hours as we had to say inside with the dog and couldn’t use the boat dock. Overall the trip was OK.

Maybe good for summer, but not for 3 weeks during winter

There were many issues, but also a number of positives. Positive things about this rental:1. Communication with host and manager was excellent. They installed a card table before our visit at our request, to use as an extra computer desk. They also responded promptly when I texted.2. There's a beautiful view of Lake Austin, and a nice big yard.3. The kitchen was very well equipped.4. A good grocery store is located within 5 miles.Negative things about this rental:1. The first night we stayed there, the mattress in the master bedroom was so soft that we rolled toward each other all night. We changed the mattress with one in the second bedroom, which was better.2. The house is very drafty when it is cold. 3. It's not a good neighborhood for walking. The only park nearby is just a boat launch and one picnic table. We had to drive at least 22 minutes to get to a nice park with trails. 4. The only decent restaurants are over a 20 minute drive away.5. We were able to use the television, but it has a jerry-rigged Roku attached that we never were able to get to work. It turns out that the prior guest had changed the password. At this rental rate, they need a new TV with direct streaming.6. A cockroach crawled over me two days before we left, and a dead one was in the bathroom the next morning. Owner offered to spray sooner than planned but said some cockroaches are inevitable there.7. We left 3 days early. I understand there is a no refund policy.

Not enough illumination outside caused an accident

The accident caused me to bleed through the nose. The bulbs lights outside DO NOT WORK; they are dead. We told the owner, and he didn't believe us. The cleanliness is bad. For example, the top of the refrigerator looks like it has not been cleaned in years. So here is my honest comment: We are not coming back just because we weren't treated well by the owner.

Awesome stay

The views off the back porch were amazing! The canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards were awesome! And there were plenty of life jackets/oats to choose from. The kitchen was well stocked, though it was missing a spatula. The A/C was sufficient for our needs. Overall, a great place to stay.

This house needs some help.

I’m compelled to be brutally honest… start with the positives: the location was fantastic. The weather was great and the lake was super clean. Now onto the negatives… the hot tub was cold, the deck was sketchy, the ladder on the dock was broken and the steps into the water were super slippery with moss. The mattresses were blown out. And the super fun part was the whole house leaned so that was a bit weird. The house needs a deep cleaning. The shower drain was clogged and the A/C is on its last leg. The paddle boards were in rough shape. Also I see that I got a message about the hammock being torn and a new one was shipped. What was I supposed to install the new one that showed up in the middle of stay? Also a new paddle was shipped too? the boat dock was super sketchy moves quite a bit when waves hit it held up truck strap!!! This place needs a considerable amount of work. I feel I was taken advantage of a bit and the owner is milking this property. Very disappointed. Do yourself a favor a skip this listing. As a long time VRBO user with high rating this was one of the most out of service homes I have ever stayed in. There must be a higher standard considered especially in Lake Austin. Shame on the owner for not keeping everything in service. No way this is close to a 5 star listing. Work must be done. I will be requesting a partial refund. I was embarrassed as I was in charge of this vacation. My friends were nice about it but were not stoked as well. cheers!

Response from VrboOwner on Sep 26, 2024
Our home has been on VRBO for 15 years. During that time, we have received about 250 reviews with a 9.6 rating and dozens of families who return year after year to enjoy our home. This saga started with my property manager contacting me because she arrived at the house hours after Samuel’s scheduled check out and found he and his group were still there, our SUP was badly damaged, and Samuel and his friends were in the process of leaving the house in complete disarray. Prior to their arrival, I advised Samuel that the hammock had torn during the prior guests’ stay and a paddle had been damaged, that I ordered replacements for both which would be delivered during his stay, and I apologized for the inconvenience. He did not respond, nor did I hear from him during his stay regarding any problems with the house. Instead, a few days after he left, I received a message that he was very disappointed, had left a very negative review and that he was demanding a refund. Since the review was not yet posted, I asked him to please let me know what the problems were and to give me some details about the damaged SUP. He ignored the question about the SUP he damaged and proceeded to tell me he was 6’5” 220 pounds (my manager said he was closer to 5’8” 150) and that “I am not demanding a refund in exchange for deleting my review because that would be extortion.” That statement, together with his complaint that it was unreasonable that he would have to “install” the new hammock during his stay, which entailed opening the box and hanging it on the hooks on the hammock stand, convinced me that I was about the be the victim of a shake down. Regardless, we take guest feedback very seriously and have investigated Samuel’s complaints. The HVAC is working fine. It was 97 degrees each day Samuel was there, the house was full of people and the HVAC continues to keep the home very cool. Regarding the hot tub heating, I get a photo of the hot tub temperature gauge after each cleaning. It was 102 an hour before these guests arrived and 2 hours after they left. It is working fine. The ladder on the boat dock has been removed and not replaced because the stairs which are 3 feet away are much safer and easier to use. As for the stairs being slippery, they go down into the lake and we leave a scrub brush near them if they grow slippery during a guest’s stay. We have replaced the broken SUP with a new, lighter SUP. I, like most VRBO owners, want to know about problems and maintenance concerns during a guest’s stay so we can address them immediately during the stay, or as soon as possible. It raises suspicions for me, and I hope for review readers as well, when I do not hear from a guest regarding complaints during their stay, and then receive a litany of complaints after a late departure and damaged property along with a demand for a refund. We are very proud of our 9.6 rating and strive to improve on each of our guests’ experience at our house.

Lovely!

This was our second stay at this lovely place, and once again, everything was fantastic. We absolutely love the backyard and the easy lake access—perfect for cooling down in the Texas summer. Have you ever considered renting out the backyard and lake access separately, similar to a 'Swimply for lakes' option. We definitely plan to be back!

It was good to be back!

This was our second stay at Waterfront on beautiful Lake Austin. The fabulous water access is one thing that brought us back for our family who loves to be on the water. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding were some highlights of our stay, with all the equipment conveniently provided by the facility. The home itself projects that unique cool Austin style decor, creating a vibe that was both relaxing and chic. The kitchen became the heart of our family gatherings, with the gas oven stove being a particular delight for cooking up family meals that were shared around the quaint dining table. The spacious bathroom with its huge shower felt like a luxury spa, and the easy-to-access washing and drying machines added to the convenience of our stay. After days full of adventure, we retreated to the comfortable sleeping quarters. But nothing tops the amazing views of the lake and Texas hill country where we watched the relaxing sunsets and enjoyed stargazing. We’re already looking forward to our next stay at this little slice of heaven on Lake Austin. It’s a place where memories are made and, the worries of the world seem to just drift away on the gentle waves of the lake.

A solid weekend

We booked for a somewhat last minute 4 day, 3 night stay. The house was quaint and as pictured, but the dock was a bit more dilapidated than the photos make it look. Thankfully the covering laid down over the wood made it possible to walk around the top and we covered some of the older chairs with towels. Overall a good stay

About the host

Hosted by David M. Gottfried

Host profile image
I moved to Austin in 1992 and found the city where I will live for the rest of my life. I purchased this house in 1995 so I could water ski before work and found so much more than just a place to live. I found that the lake living lifestyle gave me activities and tranquility that added so much to my quality of life. My two daughters and I love to stay at our lake house when guests are not there, as a mini-vacation from hustle and bustle of our lives in central Austin.

Why they chose this property

My love of being on the water and waterskiing before work in the morning drove me to purchase this wonderful house on Lake Austin in 1995. I lived in the house full-time until 1999, when I moved to central Austin to be closer to work.

What makes this property unique

The area across the lake from the house is a Golden Cheeked Warbler Habitat so it is completely undeveloped. The view from the 600 sf deck on top of the boat dock is just beautiful with an undeveloped 'mountain' (by Austin standards) instead of houses. Evenings and early mornings on the deck are particularly magical.
