Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

This handsome 3 bedroom house and 1 bedroom carriage house apartment can sleep 8 comfortably. Smaller groups can rent house only(see rates below). Together, they sit on 6 beautiful acres. Groomed walking paths meander through woods and meadow. There is a large expanse of lush lawn and gardens and a wonderful old stone foundation / outdoor room.

The house, completed in 2004 is detailed with pine and timber. The custom kitchen/hearth-room has a Wolf commercial range, lots of cooking tools, gas/stone fireplace, beautiful windows, large dinning room and screened porch.

The hallway walled with books leads to the three bedrooms and 2 baths. The master has a queen bed and attached bath, bedroom 2 has a double bed and bedroom three has 2 twin beds. Bedding is 450 and 500 count cotton sheeting and cotton or down blankets. The lower level entertainment room, mudroom, bath and laundry walk out to a woodland garden seating area with fire pit. The lower level also leads to the 2 stall garage. The house can be rented alone or with the carriage house.

The carriage house is charming with high slanted pine ceilings and cozy dormered windows. It has one large bedroom with a queen timber bed, a bathroom with shower, a living room with gas fireplace and convertible sofa bed and a kitchenette with microwave, and apt. size refrigerator. There is garage parking for one vehicle under the carriage house.

The very private swimming beach with boat/beach house and dock is about 200 ft from the back door. Smith Lake is 323 acres with a maximum depth of 31 ft. and specializes in blue gill, crappie, northern pike, large mouth bass and walleye. Smith Lake is a great lake for tubing and water skiing. There is a canoe and a row boat to enjoy at no charge.

The boat house is finished and furnished for a day at the lake with double screened doors, allowing shelter and a place for snacks and toys. A boat landing/launch site is about a half mile down the road.

AND what we think makes this property so unique and so appealing for the family that wants elbow room and room to roam, is that you can leave the lake, walk just across the lightly traveled road through the Norway pines and timber steps and return to the private and spacious grounds and house to enjoy a whole different world. Hayward, with it's World Class events, wireless internet cafes, shopping, groceries, golfing, boat and bike rentals, bakery, wine cellars, art galleries, live theater, library etc. is only 5 minutes away.

BEAUTIFUL Home with amazing owners!

  • 5 of 5

There is so much that my family and I love about staying at this house in Hayward, that I will just list it below:

- Absolutely beautiful home - wide open kitchen/livingroom/dining room space to enjoy by all. Made it easy to prepare meals in the large kitchen!

- The rooms were large enough and the carriage house is GREAT for additional space

- The lake was full of fish - we caught a lot of crappie, which made it fun (especially for our 2 year old who caught 9 in one outing!).

- The fire pit was great, and so relaxing.

- Wonderful screened in porch for playing cards at night.

- A/C was working well and in general the house was clean and kept up very nicely.

- The cabin is 5 minutes from downtown Hayward, which is great for grocery trips and fun outings walking downtown.

- Owners are great - Jim is wonderful to work with and always wanted to make sure we had everything we needed to make our stay great.

Bottom line is - this place is great. We will be heading back next year for our third year, and cannot wait!

My Family's Favorite Retreat in Hayward!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I just finished a ten day holiday in this wonderful house! We rented it the last time we were in Hayward and it was the unanimous family choice for a return visit. It is a perfect house for a holiday! Smith lake is a few steps away and great for tubing, swimming, canoeing or just sitting on the dock and reading. The boat house is so convenient and makes a day at the lake a true delight. And for the aspiring chefs in the family, the house is a pleasure to use. Great appliances, stocked with every amenity imaginable to prepare daily feasts and enjoy them on the screened in porch, by the fire pit or on the patio! Walks around the property are so much fun and when you need to make the inevitable trip to town, we are grateful that it is only 5 minutes away!. Jim, the owner is so easy to work with and will do everything possible to ensure that you have a great stay. The house is spotless, and the beds and furnishings so comfortable and complete that relaxing here is the only work you have to do - just what you want for a family summer holiday in Hayward. For those of you who love them as we do, look no further - this is your place! We will be back!!!

Honestly? Disappointed...

  • 2 of 5

First things first---have to mention the positives:

-unique property

-very quiet and peaceful

-screened-in porch is magnificent!

-loved the view down to the lake from the living room and kitchen

-beds were incredibly comfortable

-canoe was in great shape

-walking trails around the house were a cool feature

-loved the short 5 minute drive into town!

Now--- on to the negatives:

-overall cleanliness of the house was very disappointing:

-dirty towels in the washing machine when we got there

-candy wrappers along the baseboards in the master bedroom

-rooms did not appear to be vacuumed

-more garbage wrappers sticking out of the chair cushions downstairs

-cobwebs all over the staircase from the upstairs to the downstairs

-cobwebs on the master bedroom bedposts and along the ceiling in the basement

-pots and pans in the kitchen were crusted with old food (We had to wash everything we used thoroughly prior to using it)

-salt spilled all over one of the cupboards

-drawers had food crumbs all over

-found old lettuce hanging off a spoon in the drawer (yuck!)

-bathroom drawers in the master bathroom had hair, lint, and nail clippings

-soap dish in the other bathroom was very dirty

-downstairs bathroom had fecal matter caked on the top front of the toilet seat and under the toilet seat lid. This was really nasty!

-walkways around the house were all overgrown with shrubbery

-seating area to the right of the main garage was unusable due to dirt and debris covering all the chairs and table

-campfire chairs had to be THOROUGHLY cleaned off to get them to a point where we could sit on them

-both grills, especially the charcoal one had to be THOROUGHLY cleaned as well before we could use them

-The Wolf Range in the kitchen was nice but be sure to read the manual before using if you don’t want to burn your hair off. Anytime a burner was on anything over medium-high heat, all the other burners would be sparking as if they were trying to light. Plus the oven takes 30 minutes to pre-heat, so take that into consideration when planning your meals.

Had really high expectations for this place after reading the reviews. We've been staying at different luxury homes around Hayward for the past 6 years--it's such a competitive market so I can safely say we won't be back. I do think the owner cares about the property and with a little TLC (or a better cleaning crew) he can bring it back!

Beautiful Getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent the week here with my extended family and rented the carriage house along with the cabin... all I have to say is WOW. It was perfect!!!! The beach was perfect for our little swimmers (2, 3, 5, 6) and the lake was so peaceful and perfect for skiing, tubing, kayaking, fishing and swimming! The house was absolutely beautiful and had everything that we needed. We enjoyed walks around the property, many fires in the fire pit, lazy evenings and mornings on the screened in porch, and lots of time spent swimming and relaxing on the dock. It was exactly what our family needed as a relaxing get-away! Town is close enough to spend some time mini golfing or going out to dinner, but we never wanted to leave the cabin!!! Our whole family loved it. The owner is also so easy and wonderful to work with and has a very quick response time! You will not be disappointed! We WILL be coming back!

High End Luxury

  • 5 of 5

We couldn’t have been more pleased with this location for a family, summer get away. We have 4 kids, ages 12, 10, 8, and 7. We rented the main house only, and had plenty of room to relax and spread out. The house provided a high end luxury of everything from the linens to the kitchen appliances. The grounds the property sits on are beautiful. The moss covered trails through the woods are something out of a fairy tale. Among my favorite memories are early morning walks in the woods and coffee on the dock. The kids had a blast with nature scavenger hunts, and hours of fishing on the dock. We had a wonderful time, and had to promise our kids we would return! Would highly recommend this property!

Perfect Memorial Day Birthday Memories

  • 5 of 5

What a view! Every aspect of this stay was so easy because the cabin(s)/boat house were equipped with everything one could need, especially for a larger group. The cabins themselves had amazing decor, were clean, comfortable and so impressive and cute. The owner was responsive, easy to rent from and extremely nice. My kids are 9 and 5 and even though it was unseasonably cool we still fished, canoed, walked the woods, read on the dock, and had bonfires. The kids LOVED the vast yard to just play soccer, chase each other, football, race remote control cars, read in the grass and we spent a ton of time just sitting in the sun next to the little pond just talking. We all got so relaxed the time flew by way too quickly and we were all depressed to have to go home. With the town so close we were able to put-put, visit the Muskie and the candy store too. We've always loved the area and I definitely will have to rent this cabin again - and would recommend it highly. Thank you for great memories and a relaxing and fun 40th birthday location!
