Beautiful

The best way to describe it, is to say it felt like being in our own home. It has everything you need to enjoy a stay from cooking to beach gear to location to restaurants.. all fantastic. The host . Owner could not have been more helpful and considerate. And the time we spent here, while being tasked with dropping our kid off at college, allowed us to enjoy one last family vacation before everything changes. I’d give it at least 7 stars if they were available.

GORGEOUS! GORGEOUS! Seriously, GORGEOUS!

The pictures and description of this property cannot capture the beauty of this cottage--must be seen! Perfectly maintained and pristine in every detail, you will not want to leave. The owner, Bruce Craig, can set the standard for a great host, responsive even when away in Spain. If you like to cook, you will go crazy for the gourmet kitchen--equipped so that two chefs could work at the professional stove. The garden is just as pictured and the house is surrounded by flowering bushes and plants. When I was there, the jasmine bower was in full bloom and the scent was enchanting. One note of caution: La Jolla is going crazy with construction. It is supposed to be banned once the high summer season begins but I was told sometimes it continues. Just ask. Have a fabulous stay and say hello to Bruce!

At the time of this review there were indeed two homes up the street that were being remodeled, so you could hear some hammering with the living room windows open. All finished now, so everything is back to being peaceful and quiet.

A Week in Paradise

I can't say enough good things about our stay in Bruce's beach cottage. Right from the start our experience was great—reserving and communicating and checking in with Bruce was a breeze. He met us upon arrival and walked us through how to operate things and showed us where things were—so nice not to have to puzzle through how to do things. Additionally, he has a book with instructions on how to operate everything which is quite helpful. The house is actually even better than it appears in the photos. The location—a peaceful neighborhood, yet near to stores, restaurants and a beautiful stretch of Windansea Beach couldn't be better. If you like to cook your meals, everything you could possibly need is there for you. The window that opens to the deck is a huge bonus really creating that indoor/outdoor feel, and looking out at the magical lit garden while listening to the soothing sounds of, not one but two water fountains and watching the humming birds flit around is my idea of heaven. The seating on the deck is very comfortable and you have the option of having full sun or pulling overhead coverings over the deck when it heats up. The pillows and duvets are down and and the beds are great. The living room is cozy with comfortable seating and plenty of cozy throws to snuggle up with. I highly recommend a stay here and hope to return again to relax in this lovely oasis.

Just perfect

We have stayed at many different rentals over the years but Bruce's place is our favorite. The cottage is perfect (and we are picky!) and the outdoor space is amazing. Walking distance to everything. The only bad thing was having to leave. Thank you Bruce!

Beautiful beach cottage

This is a beautiful cottage, perfectly located for beach, shops, restaurants and golf courses. The house itself is beautifully decorated has a well stocked kitchen ideal for gourmet meals. The fairy tail garden with its twinkly lights is a great place to relax day and night, and where we spent the majority of the time. Bruce was wonderful he left helpful notes all over the house, and his latest kitchen gadget for us to try! As this was our first time to La Jolla we appreciated the binder full of information, recommendations and maps on how to get around. Bruce thought of everything! We had a great week.

Spectacular Tranquility

Our family has vacationed in La Jolla every year for the past several years. This home is by far one of the best. We love beach cottages and not only is the interior fantastic but the front and backyard is perfect. The attention to detail with the gardens is amazing and offers a tranquil retreat. Stay here: you will not be disappointed.

Loved it!

My family stayed at this property for 8 days in early June 2019. The property was everything we were hoping it would be and more. The pictures on the website are incredible, but it’s even better in person. The backyard.... I cannot say enough about. Each day we would head out and explore the local area (which is fantastic) and then end our day on the couches in the backyard enjoying the relaxing sound of the fountains. The neighborhood is nice and quiet and very charming. We loved being able to walk to the beach and restaurants. Bruce was the best host, easily accessible if needed (we didn’t need anything because everything was perfect, but did check in to let him know everything was great and he responded promptly). I would absolutely stay at his beautiful cottage again and very likely will as we have family nearby. Five stars all the way!

Can’t imagine anything better

The cottage is truly everything you expect based on the information here and the fantastic reviews. Stunning gardens and deck, comfortable beds, gourmet kitchen. Very homey all around. Walk to beach and town, short drive to San Diego. Quiet neighborhood close to everything. Don’t miss the Sunday farmers market up the street! Owner Bruce was very communicative and helpful. Can not recommend more highly! Thanks again, Bruce!

Quiet Beach Cottage Retreat

This La Jolla Beach Cottage is the perfect setting for a quiet retreat. The house is beautiful with a well stocked kitchen and we enjoyed cooking many of our meals there. The deck offers a comfortable place to lounge and the patio with table in the back corner of the yard is enjoyable for eating. If you like birds, you can enjoy watching them in this beautifully landscaped backyard. The lull of the water feature is soothing and attracts birds for a drink or bath. Bruce has done an outstanding job of offering his bright and airy home with everything you need for a great stay and it is located close to the beach and town, as well as an easy trip into the city. Bruce was easy to communicate with and is responsive to questions and needs. We would definitely stay here again!

We defy you to find a more beautiful, comfortable and welcoming place to stay in LaJolla

Our 20 day experience at La Jolla Garden Cottage (LJGC) FAR EXCEEDED our expectations. I am conflicted in writing such a deserving RAVE review because I don’t want to shut myself out on future availability. But, in the interest of fairness, let me say that LJGC is one of the finest, well-maintained and charming places available in La Jolla. It is FIRST RATE. Well appointed, beautiful garden, fine street just blocks from one of the most compelling beaches I have ever seen. Sunset at the beach is priceless. More importantly, the owner takes great pride in providing an extraordinary venue for guests. Wonderful beds, music available throughout and TV/Cable access. I consider myself to be a somewhat “fussy”, A-type New Yorker…..and fully capable of being critical when necessary. There is NOTHING negative here! WE WILL BE BACK!!! Kudos and our sincerest thanks to the property owner…..and our new BFF!!! Take every piece of praise from prior reviews, add ours…….and together they won’t adequately describe what you will experience. Nuff said!!!

Beginner's Luck!

This was our first VRBO rental and we can only hope all of our future VRBO experiences are as phenomenal as this! Bruce was the perfect host, shared his knowledge of the area - places to go, places to eat (you have to try the burgers at the Public House!) His home is warm and comfortable with an outstanding kitchen - was able to make my smoothies every morning - and a great deck & garden for relaxing with a different type of beverage after a busy day. It's the perfect location to explore the San Diego area - short walk into town or to the ocean. We rented a car but barely used it. We brought our bicycles and spent most days exploring the area - rode to Old Town, Gaslamp Quarter, around Mission Bay - outstanding bike paths & lanes - very courteous drivers - felt very safe. We'll definitely be back

Perfect Place - Don't want to leave

I thought I struck gold when I found Bruce's cottage on VRBO, but realized quickly it was really more like DIAMONDS. Everything about the description is 100% accurate - you have to pinch yourself when you get here. La Jolla is awesome and the cottage is in the perfect part of town, on the quieter side but an easy walk to the village. We kayaked, snorkeled, hiked Torrey Pines, bet on the races at Del Mar and chilled. Class AAAA Vacay.

One of our best vacations ever!

This was our family's first vacation in several years and expectations were high. We were not disappointed! The cottage is absolutely beautiful... Even more so than the pictures, if you can believe it. It is wonderfully maintained and the garden is amazing. Bruce is a pleasure to work with and he truly wants all of his guests to enjoy their time in La Jolla. He provided some excellent tips for us, including several delicious restaurant recommendations. The proximity to both the village and the beach is ideal. We hope to stay here again.

Two-bedroom Gem!

My husband and I were looking for a winter retreat and we hit the jackpot with Garden Cottage. Cozy, clean and comfortable, tastefully appointed, lovingly landscaped and private, the cottage answered all of our needs. The area offers so much: La Jolla with its shops, restaurants and beaches would be enough, but there is also the draw of San Diego and its many points of interest, such as the Zoo and Balboa Park, the Aquarium and Sea World. We hope to return to the Cottage and would enthusiastically recommend it to friends. Bruce was a great host and even emailed to remind us of the weekly Sunday farmer's market within walking distance, another must-do. What did we love most about the Cottage? Its backyard garden oasis, with two fountains and soft night lighting.
Response from VrboOwner on Apr 1, 2020
So, glad you enjoyed Jean and thank you for the nice note you left on the counter for me: "Dear Bruce, The only problem with staying at the Garden Cottage is that you never want to leave, but leave we did, to see everything we could in San Diego. How happy we were to come back each late afternoon to this welcoming oasis. Enjoy it, this beautiful home you have created, the lovely climate, and the beauty of La Jolla and beyond. We'll miss it and hope to return. Our very best, Jean and Mike."

Even better than expected

We have done VRBO before so a lot of research went into finding this Cottage. We were so impressed that the actual home was even far better than the photos. The Cottage was immaculate, well stocked and perfect for our needs. The deck and yard is completely private. Loved the fact we could easily walk to town or the beach. We felt very at home here and would have no reservations about retuning the next time we come out this way. Also, you could not find a better owner to work with than Bruce. This was certainly an A+ in our book!

Charming cottage, beautiful garden, within walking distance to town

Having grown up in La Jolla, I knew the location we would want to stay in and this fit the bill. You're within walking distance of town although we rented bikes to make it easy for everyone to get around. The house is perfect for two adults and a teenager. It's very comfortable and clean with a wonderful garden and deck for sitting out in the sun and grilling in the evening. The kitchen is fantastic. We had extended family over for dinner and the kitchen had everything we needed. We hope to rent here again.

Great location for La Jolla

The cottage was great for our needs in La Jolla. Great location to the beach and walking to restaurants, tennis and such. The only drawback was lack of AC, but with windows open, we were fine. The house was well stocked and we were very comfortable during our week there. We will be back for sure!

Very relaxing, wonderful week!

My husband and I were celebrating our 25th anniversary and also escaping a brutal, hard winter in northern Michigan. We had such a great time in this house on Arenas Street. Everywhere you looked in the house there was a color or design that was very appealing. We really enjoyed the beautiful kitchen and the fold-able open wall of windows out to the sunny deck. There was a soft flowing waterfall in the backyard that made sitting out on the deck very relaxing. We took many walks to the three beaches from the house and also walked into La Jolla everyday for breakfast or lunch. The sky lights throughout the house provided much needed sunlight for us. We would love to go back at some point, perhaps next winter.
