Our cabin was on tour with the Pass Christian Historical society May 1, 2011. Come stay in a historic site.

The only remaining part of the estate of Governor Parker who, in 1915, hosted a visit here by Teddy Roosevelt. The log cabin lies in over 2 acres of garden and is set back from the more than 190 feet of beach front to allow for privacy and tranquility. The cabin was one of the very few structures to survive Katrina, though it was halved in size by the storm. With the beach at its feet, it is also only a short distance further to the picturesque port and to the center of Pass Christian which is being rebuilt. It is then a short drive along the coast into the hustle and bustle of Gulfport and its casinos.

The cabin is totally renovated with luxury fittings in the bathroom and an ingenious kitchen area. There are just 2 rooms, as well as the bathroom, the bedroom with King’s size bed, and 42” plasma screen, with cable TV and wireless internet. The main room, which serves as sitting room, dining room and kitchen has a dining table seating 6 and a queen size sofa bed. Both rooms open onto a large screen porch (the former great room) ideal for enjoying relaxing drinks, and on cooler nights sitting in front of the wood-burning fireplace (easily lit by gas) or generally sitting and admiring the extensive garden, under the ceiling fan with a wonderful view over the gulf. There is a fenced pool in the garden, a short walk from the cabin. The property is fenced.

Why Rebecca O'Dwyer chose Mississippi

My grandparents bought this property in the early 1900's.. My grandfather had the cabin build in the 1920's. Teddy Roosevelt visited a part of the property in about 1915, that part was added in 1969 to the original plot, it is mentioned in Roosevelt's diaries.

What makes this house unique

Just sitting in the pool on a hot evening talking and looking at the stars. Some mornings in the spring or fall there is very heavy fog on the beach, beautiful for photographing. The sunrises and sunsets especially in the winter months can be fantastic, when the sun rises and sets over the water. Walking on the beach, especially in the winter months, when you have the beach to yourself and can commune with the sea birds. Birding in the garden especially during the fall and spring migration. The birds are gathering in the fall to gain strength before they set off over the Gulf. One visitor commented in our guestbook at the house on how excited they were to see so many Bluebirds in the garden. There are always birds, just many more during the migration. Come and add to your life list.

While the property is lovely and dog friendly, the local beach ordinances forbid dogs on the beach. We will not return for that reason.

Notes:
We have a unique kitchen built into a piece of furniture. Nothing is missing it is all there but camouflaged. The lights over the kitchen are on a dimmer. The lamps in the rooms are on the wall switches.

Love size of property but needs better maintenance of property...(Grass)

Grass was knee high when we arrived and thigh high when we left 4 days later.... I do love the size of the property and the fencing for my dogs but when you cannot enjoy it for the grass, it makes for a long few days... Also, there needs to be a TV in the kitchen/Living room area...

Owner's Response: Hope you will come back in the winter. The winter is wonderful and the grass is dormant. When we have a rainy month in the summer the grass grows. We have contracted for the grass to be mowed once every two weeks. Our monthly mowing cost is $470. or over $5000. a year. Mowing two acres takes a number of hours. We have been looking into changing this, but haven't been able to find another contractor that will come more often in the rainy summer months. With our current contractor we would have to contract a mowing every week for the entire year. Did you take a photo of the thigh high grass? I would appreciate seeing it. If so could you post it with your review, please?

Lack of outside lighting - security

pros:

* enjoyed the pool very much - was the best thing of all!!

* the grounds were great if you had a dog - we didn't bring ours

* house was clean

* kitchen and bath was well stocked

cons:

* felt very INSECURE - there was NO yard lighting (the reason for low rating). Only two small lights by the screen porch - the house/yard all around us was VERY dark.

* the only TV was in the bedroom

* the screen porch was dirty

OVERALL:

My sister and I felt very unsafe. It was like we were inside of a fish bowl - one could see in, but we could not see out due to lack of outside lighting. There should be flood lights added for safety.

Will be returning in the future!

The cabin, yard, and pool was everything we expected it to be. We had a family of 6 and 3 dogs and never felt over crowded. The screened in room was perfect for my dogs to dry off in after visiting the beach and the fence around the pool was nice to let my dogs run in while we relaxed in the pool. The view is great and just a short walk to the beach. My only concern was the amount of termites that would come out at night if you left the lights on. This meant that we had to sit in the dark on the porch at night, which wasn't a big deal, I just wish we could've enjoyed sitting outside with a light on. If you are a dog lover and insist on bringing your fur babies on vacation, this rental is perfect! It's the most accommodating rental I've stayed in with my dogs. We plan on returning for future vacations!

CANCELLATIONS – Cancellations made 45 days or longer before your rental are refundable.
will incur a cancellation fee of $100. Cancellations from 45 days to 30 days
before the rental will incur a cancellation fee of $200. We try to be very
fair, but last minute cancellations are very disruptive. This fee also
applies to longer rentals that are eligible for a full refund as described

Cancellation inside of 30 days or early departure does not warrant any
refund of rent unless the unit is re-rented for that time period. We will
attempt to re-rent as many of your dates as is possible at the last minute at
the best possible rate based on our judgment given how last minute the
cancellation is. Refunds and returns of security deposits will be processed on
cleared funds within 2 weeks of cancellation. If you are concerned about
having to cancel your trip, we suggest that you look into trip insurance that
is available and offered by many reputable firms online and otherwise.

MONTHLY RESERVATION CANCELLATIONS - Monthly renters must cancel Sixty (60)
days prior to check-in. Monthly renters who make a change that results in
a shortened stay must do so at least Sixty (60) days prior to check-in.
These cancellations are eligible for a full refund. Refunds for cancellations
or shortened stay changes made less than 60 days prior to check-in will be
made only if the unit is re-rented for that cancelled time period.

Rentals of more than 7 nights and less than 30 days must cancel Forty Five
(45) days prior to check-in or shall forfeit any deposits made unless the
unit is re-rented for that time period.

Rentals of 7 nights or less must cancel Thirty (30) days prior to check-in
or shall forfeit any deposits made unless the unit is re-rented for that
time period

Manager's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
