About this property

On the Beach, Teddy Roosevelt Stayed Here. Pet friendly, large fenced property

After being off the VRBO rental market for two years we are back! Newly painted inside and out, new lighting inside and out and new sofas with a new covered porch. new washer /dryer, new hot water heater. The log cabin is a building that is about 100 years old and partially survived Katrina (we lost the living room which is now the covered porch.) If you would like a brand new place to stay, there are many available. If you would like a place with a long history, beautiful grounds, fenced yard and a view to the water, that is dog friendly, this is your place.

This property is the only remaining part of the estate of Governor Parker who, in 1915, hosted a visit here by Teddy Roosevelt. The log cabin lies in its own garden. We recently built a new house toward the front of the property designed by Frank Gehry and Robert Tannen. This cabin was one of the very few structures to survive Katrina, though it was halved in size by the storm. With the beach at its feet, it is also only a short distance further to the picturesque port and to the center of Pass Christian, which is being rebuilt.

Our cabin has been on tour with the Pass Christian Historical society, come stay in a historic site.

We just finished painting inside and out and adding a roof to the porch with a new sofa, lamps and rug. There are just 2 rooms, as well as the bathroom, the bedroom with king sized bed, and 42” television, with wireless Internet. We only have one TV; there is no TV in the living room, kitchen area. If you would like a second TV bring your own. The main room, which serves as sitting room, dining room and kitchen, has a dining table seating 6 and a queen size sofa bed. Both rooms open onto a large screen porch (the former great room) ideal for enjoying relaxing drinks, and on cooler nights sitting in front of the wood-burning fireplace or generally sitting and admiring the garden, under the ceiling fans with a view to the gulf through ancient oak trees. There are lights on the two north corners of the house that illuminate when their motion detector is activated so you have light when you arrive and leave.

There is a fenced pool in the garden, a short walk from the cabin. The property is fenced. During the summer, if there has been a lot of rain the grass can be long. Due to the expense of mowing we only mow every other week. If this may be a problem for you please contact Rebecca O’Dwyer, our manager and ask when the grass will be mowed to make sure it doesn’t disturb you. All other times of the year this is not a problem.

This property has been in my family for over 120 years. It is a place of tranquility, serenity and beauty. I am delighted to share it with those that would like to experience its beauty. The log house was built in the 1920’s by my grandfather. If you want new construction, this is also not the place. It is a place for writers, artists and those of us that want to unplug from everyday life to come and be renewed. If you are looking for TV in every room, perfectly manicured lawns where your dog is not welcome this is not the place for you.

An excerpt from A Book-Lover’s Holidays in the Open. 1916. By Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919).

“ON June 7, 1915, I was the guest of my friend John M. Parker, of New Orleans, at his house at Pass Christian, Mississippi. For many miles west, and especially east, of Pass Christian, there are small towns where the low, comfortable, singularly picturesque and attractive houses are owned, some by Mississippi planters, some by city folk who come hither from the great Southern cities, and more and more in winter-time from the great Northern cities also, to pass a few months. The houses, those that are isolated and those in the little towns, stand in what is really one long row; a row broken by vacant reaches, but as a whole stretching for sixty miles, with the bright waters of the Gulf lapping the beach in front of them, and behind them leagues of pine forest. Between the Gulf and the waters lies a low ridge or beach of white sand. It is hard to make anything grow in this sand; but the owners of the houses have succeeded, using dead leaves and what manure is available; and in this leaf-mould the trees and grasses and flowers grow in profusion. Long, flimsy wooden docks stretch out into the waters of the Gulf; there is not much bad weather, as a rule, but every few years there comes a terrible storm which wrecks buildings and bridges, destroys human lives by the thousand, washes the small Gulf sailing craft ashore, and sweeps away all the docks.”

Why do I say that the property has been in my family for over 120 years? And Roosevelt visited in 1915. My grandparents owned the property next to Gov. Parker. In 1969 my mother bought the Governor’s house and incorporated it into our lot.

"We will be more successful in all our endeavors if we can let go of the habit of running all the time, and take little pauses to relax and re-center ourselves. And we'll also have a lot more joy in living." -Thich Nhat Hanh

This was our 3rd time staying at TR. Cant get enough of the place (stayed a total of 33 days). Its always clean, private, relaxing, etc...to say this place is 5 star is an understatement. If you are looking for a place to stay while on the gulf coast. This is the place you want.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. I love that you "get" the place. Yes, it is a special place. The house is over 100 years old with beautiful oak trees that are much older than that. It is not a beach house, it is a house my grandfather built to be with his friends. It has been through Camille and Katrina. I am so happy you love it like my family does. This is the place you want if you want to experience the peace and calm. You like to sit on the porch and listen to the birds, walk on the beach and admire the water and the sea birds. The entire property is over 2 acres so yes, there is a bit of a walk to the beach through the front lawn. I am gutted when people don't love it and would rather be at a condo in Destin. Come back again soon.

The house was nice. The property could be cleaned up and a few trees cut back by the driveway. This stay was my postpartum gift to myself while we took our baby on the first vacation as a family. We could not use the pool. It was uncovered, had a thick film on top, was not skimming or running, and when I contacted the host to see when it was cleaned before I put my baby in it I could not get an answer for sure. This part just really disappointed me having drove 14 hours dragging all of the pool stuff along with us. When we contacted Vrbo, they three-way called the host and she made me feel like it was my fault that she did not check her phone for our messages. Overall, I would not stay here again because of the issues that we brought up to the host and that we overlooked because it is the South in the summer (cockroaches climbing the ceiling, in the dishwasher, under the kitchen sink and a gecko living behind the couch).

Very clean and the coast was easy to get in touch with. The house is not on the beach. It’s across from the beach elite at least at 1/2 acre away. It is a very small house with only one TV in the bedroom. It is very nice. We were disappointed that it was not closer to the beach.

I am sorry you were disappointed. We have a very large property, 2 1/2 acres, so yes you do have to walk about 350 feet, through one of the most beautiful collections of live oaks in the area, to get to the road and the end of our property on the south (water) side. The property is on the road that is on the beach. Hwy 90 which is in front of the house extends 23 miles from Henderson Point just west of us all the way to Biloxi, so every house has that road between the house and the beach. I invite you to explore the condos on Henderson Point, or find a house in Bay St Louis, or Pass Christian Isles, not much beach, if any, but on the water, perhaps those would be more to your liking? The house is over 100 years old all wood, no sheet rock and survived 22' of surge during Katrina (well built.) Has two 24' x 24' rooms, with 13' cathedral ceilings. We also have a very large screened porch (April is the spring bird migration and sitting on the porch listening and seeing them is a real treat. The app Merlin is great fun to use to identify their songs) that once was the living room, it has a huge fireplace. In the description I say that the house only has one TV, in the bedroom. There is also a pool on the property for our guests' use. I encourage you to read the descriptions of the house completely and look at the photographs. This house was built for my grandfather and is very close to my heart.

The lighting was bad in the bathroom and the toilet kept running. A plumber came out and made some adjustments to the toilet, but it still was not fixed. The dishwasher was broken so we had to hand wash everything. The info stated the house was on the beach. However, it was not. You could barely even see the ocean from the property. The walk to the beach was across two busy 4 lanes of traffic and thru another property to walk to the beach, about 400 yards. I didn't consider this as being on the beach as stated on the information about property. Will not be booking here again!

Thank you for your comments. To our friends that are looking to book our house, please read all the information on our site. I am very sorry about the dishwasher. It is a drawer dishwasher. It is very reliable, it sounds as if you had a bad time of it. I am sorry. About the house being on the beach. The property which includes the two houses and the pool are as close to being on the beach as one can get in the 25 miles between Henderson Point and Biloxi where the road runs. You do indicate you could see the water from the house. The other property you refer to is part of the same property. We added a fence for the benefit of the guests that have dogs. We have used the "on the beach" moniker for over 20 years. Perhaps you would enjoy Seaside or Bay St. Louis or even Pass Christian Isles?

New Orleans native, spent summers in the 'Pass' growing up.

Why they chose this property

My grandparents bought this property in the early 1900's.. My grandfather had the cabin build in the 1920's. Teddy Roosevelt visited a part of the property in about 1915, that part was added in 1969 to the original plot, it is mentioned in Roosevelt's diaries.

What makes this property unique

Just sitting in the pool on a hot evening talking and looking at the stars. Some mornings in the spring or fall there is very heavy fog on the beach, beautiful for photographing. The sunrises and sunsets especially in the winter months can be fantastic, when the sun rises and sets over the water. Walking on the beach, especially in the winter months, when you have the beach to yourself and can commune with the sea birds. Birding in the garden especially during the fall and spring migration. The birds are gathering in the fall to gain strength before they set off over the Gulf. One visitor commented in our guestbook at the house on how excited they were to see so many Bluebirds in the garden. There are always birds, just many more during the migration. Come and add to your life list.
