Delightful Home, Beautiful Vista, Peaceful Location
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing week at Mountain View in early October when the fall colors were at their peak. The house is located on a quiet hilltop overlooking Fisherman’s Bay. Words cannot describe the incredible view through floor to ceiling windows that extend the entire length of the house. The mood changes from morning to evening as the sun moves across the sky and the light on the water dazzles and darkens. The location is wonderfully secluded, quiet, and yet easily accessible. The driveway is steep but not a concern during our stay.
The kitchen is well equipped so it was easy to prepare our own seafood delights if we chose not to dine out after a busy day hiking Mount Desert Island or just strolling the Carriage Roads in Acadia National Park. We explored it all... Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Somes Sound, Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor, countless lighthouses and more. Not to be missed is the Schoodic Peninsula, not far from the house. It is the only part of Acadia National Park on the Winter Harbor Side of Frenchman’s
Bay. The restaurants everywhere were wonderful though a number close after the 1st weekend in October so It’s always good to call ahead after the tourist season which we found to be the ideal time to visit. Daytime temperatures were perfect for all outdoor activities and the evenings delightfully cool.
The biggest challenge for us was the very spotty, often non-existent WiFi. My husband needed to be accessible for clients and send reports to the court that hung up and sometimes never arrived. In this day and time internet access should be consistently available. Other than that we highly recommend a stay, there is much to see and do amidst the beauty and sounds of nature... a photographer’s dream no matter the season.
A room with a view on heaven's landscape masterpiece
Our family stayed at the house from July 8 to July 15, 2017 and we enjoyed our stay there so much! There were five of us (with 2 children ages 4 and 13) but the house can easily accommodate more. The kitchen/living area is roomy and is surrounded by floor to ceiling windows that face the bay, providing constantly changing and incredibly beautiful views. We ventured out on day trips to Acadia National Park (both locally and on Mt Desert Island), Bar Harbor, Castine, and Corea which were all a reasonable drive away. Hiking was excellent in both parts of Acadia. We loved coming back to the house in the evening to make dinner and enjoy the sunset. Wildlife n abundance. A family of porcupines live close by.
The house is well appointed and comfortable. It has a small but pleasant deck with a grill available. We loved waking up to the magnificent views and watching the lobster fishermen at work checking their pots.
There is also a laundry with washer and dryer which was a big plus. There is limited wifi but that didn't interfere with our good times since we played games, worked on a jigsaw puzzle, and figured out how to play the record player. The house is perched on a rocky section of a mountain (hence the great views!) and is accessed by a steep gravel driveway. We had only minor issues during our stay to which the owner was quickly responsive.
We definitely would rent this house again.
Amazing view but...
This house is very spacious, modern, very private and has THE most awesome view of Bar Harbor, the Porcupines, Frenchman's Bay. It is hilltop and I would strongly recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle for the hillside driveway. The house is not A/C so the 180 degree floor to ceiling windows that allow for the incredible view also allow a great deal of heat to come in (with them being south facing). Great in cooler weather. There are three small windows to open in the living area.(Would give it 4 stars except for the driveway and the heat in the warmer days.)The 4 beds are all King sized and comfortable in large bedrooms. The 4 bathrooms are large, and the downstairs bathroom has two sinks. The kitchen has all of the amenities but the cabinets are oddly arranged with pots and utensils on the other side instead of near the stove. Wish the large TV had been downstairs over the fireplace and near the comfortable but dated couches. You will enjoy this house, especially in cooler weather or if you are out and about most of the day. Winter Harbor is lovely and has some conveniences like an IGA grocery, lobster pound, restaurants, post office, antique shop, gift shops, two casual dining sites (fab milkshakes at Gerrish) and one fine dining, a bakery and 5 &10. Birch Harbor, a short ride, has a gas station/convience store and the Nautical Pub has night life and pizza. Corea Harbor, the prettiest little place in Maine is about 15 min. drive. Bar Harbor is about a 45 min. drive depending on the traffic.
The views are more amazing than the pictures, and the house is nicer than the pictures.
There is plenty of cross ventilation if you open the windows in the office and living room. The driveway is steep, but 2wd is fine. I could see the need for 4wd if there is snow on the ground.
The one change I'd suggest is to convert the office to a bedroom.
We are planning to return soon!
Great location to spend a week or more during summer and fall months. Enjoy the local festivals, Schoodic Point and Acadia National Park. Short drives will take you to several ponds, lakes, and ocean-side beaches. Also, spend a day shoping in Bar Harbor. Plenty to do ..... or just do nothing and enjoy quiet walks by the shores. Other Activities: kayaking, art festivals, bike riding, shopping, and fishing.
