Culebra is the Caribbean most people never find — no resorts, no cruise ships, no crowds. Casa Estrella sits above it all with sweeping harbor views, constant trade winds, and skies dark enough at night to see the Milky Way. It's Puerto Rico, which means no passport, no currency exchange — the best version of a Caribbean escape.
The main house and casita are two completely private structures, each with their own deck and full bath. Perfect for two couples traveling together, a family, or a small group that wants space without sacrificing togetherness. Outside, 5 gated acres, an outdoor shower, and a propane grill set the tone for slow mornings with the trade winds and evenings grilling churrasco under a sky full of stars.
Flamenco Beach — consistently ranked one of the world's best — is 15 minutes away. Punto Soldado, the closest beach to the property, is 8 minutes by car and excellent for snorkeling. Leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles nest on Culebra's beaches seasonally.
A hidden island retreat and sanctuary above the sea, offering sweeping ocean views, gentle hilltop breezes, and quiet starlit nights — an authentic island escape.
All fees included. No hidden costs.
——————————————— COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHAT MAKES CULEBRA DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CARIBBEAN ISLANDS? No large resorts, no cruise ship crowds, no casinos. Culebra is a small island municipality with about 1,800 residents, protected wildlife refuge land, and beaches that feel the way the Caribbean did 40 years ago. It is genuinely undeveloped by design.
WHAT'S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT CULEBRA? December through April is peak season. May and June offer the same weather with fewer crowds and better availability.
HOW DO GUESTS GET TO CULEBRA? Most guests fly into San Juan (SJU) and either take the passenger ferry from Fajardo (about 1 hour) or a short puddle-jumper flight directly to Culebra's small airport, 10 minutes from the property. Our caretaker will meet you on arrival and make sure you get settled. We send every guest a detailed arrival guide before check-in.
DO I NEED A PASSPORT? No. Culebra is part of Puerto Rico, a US territory. No passport, no customs, no currency exchange — just book and go.
ARE THERE SNORKELING AND DIVING SPOTS NEARBY? Punto Soldado beach — excellent for snorkeling — is the closest beach to the property. Tamarindo offers excellent snorkeling and turtle spotting 12 minutes away, and Culebrita Island and Luis Peña Channel are short boat rides away.
ARE THERE SEA TURTLES? Leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles nest on Culebra's beaches seasonally. The Culebra National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the US Caribbean.
IS STARGAZING ACTUALLY GOOD HERE? One of the best in the Caribbean. Culebra has no large resorts or city lights — on a clear night the Milky Way is visible from the deck with the naked eye.
IS THE HOUSE REALLY OFF THE GRID? The property runs on a Tesla Powerwall solar system. You get full power with no grid dependency and no blackout risk.
DO I NEED A 4WD VEHICLE? Yes. The private road to Casa Estrella requires a 4WD vehicle — a Jeep, Bronco, or similar. Our caretaker will meet you upon arrival and personally escort you to the property, and we include vehicle rental recommendations in our detailed welcome guide.
IS THERE AIR CONDITIONING? The property is cooled entirely by natural trade winds and ceiling fans throughout both structures. Casa Estrella sits on an elevated hilltop that catches a constant breeze.
CAN I WORK REMOTELY FROM CASA ESTRELLA? Yes. The main house functions as an excellent remote work home base with its own dedicated working space, kitchen, full bath, and deck — ideal for a workcation.

Lovely house. It was great to stay in the smaller house while our teens stayed in the bigger house. Easy to get to the assorted beaches and town. I hope we can stay here the next stay in Culebra

So happy our space met your needs! We look forward to hosting you again….
Beautiful home. Beautiful view. It’s close enough to town/restaurants/beaches but off the beaten path enough to get away from people. It has most everything you need. Kitchen is well stocked. The snorkel stuff was awesome. You definitely need a Jeep. Bring hand and body soap. We would stay there again!
Terrific place for our family to spend a week in Culebra. Property was comfortable and secluded, very private. Located on top of a hill where we could enjoy views of trees and the water in the distance. Relatively close to town and the surrounding beaches.
The house and casita were a perfect housing situation for our family of 6. The kids stayed in the house, and the parents had peace and quiet in the casita. We would 100% stay here again! The breeze at night was amazing. We were very comfortable here

So happy our little slice of paradise worked for you all! Looking forward to hosting you again…
Wonderful stay on Culebra in a secluded, quiet location. Beautiful sunrises over Ensenada Honda and star-filled nights from the deck. Loved the outdoor shower. Easy to get to all the island destinations, but one does need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get up the 15% grade, dirt driveway/road. Responsive hosts and comfortable accommodations.

The house felt just like our home in Vermont, tucked away up in the hills with total privacy. It’s definitely a family dwelling, and the back porch is legendary. Will definitely stay again.

Thanks for the gloing review Orion! We look forward to having you back!
Great VRBO experience, perfect location but you definitely need a jeep to get up the hill. The view is amazing and the space is very nice. The guest space is also very nice and gave us lots of room to spread out.
Casa Estrella is a thoughtfully designed and curated home. We enjoyed the views, breezes, and walk to the snorkeling beach. We hope to return next year.

We loved having you and always say the house draws wonderful people! Looking forward to hosting you again.
The property is very private, clean and comfortable! The evening breeze in the main house and casita make for a restful and peaceful nights sleep. The book collection and board games were also great fun. The communication and responses from the owner were timely and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
It’s my second time renting this beautiful property. The simplicity of the structure, the quiet of the mountaintop, the morning birds, the starty nights!! I will go to Culebra once or twice a year, will always rent this house!

Dear Ines:
You are one of many repeat renters we that we are so fortunate to have. We like to say the house draws great people and you are at the top! See you again soon
This house and property were the perfect getaway for my family. It is well-appointed, spacious and quiet - remote enough to have your privacy, but a short drive to restaurants and shops. Beautiful sunrise views from the deck, large living areas, comfy beds, well-stocked kitchen. And your host provides you with an excellent amount of information to help you make the most of this beautiful little gem of an island.
Beautiful property away from any of the busy areas of Culebra-which isn’t much to begin with. Great snorkeling at Punto Salato within minutes and all the other beaches are easy commutes. Flamenco is truly beautiful and found turtles at Tamarinda every time. Owners were very helpful and responsive. Jesse met us at the airport to show us to the property and was a lifesaver when we had some issues with the rental car office. Main house was a bit bigger than we expected and our 14 yet old loved the privacy of his own casita! Highly recommended slice of paradis!

What we were looking for with this trip was to get away from all of the stresses of every day life and to mainly just go relax for a while. This property proved to be exactly what we were looking for. It had ample space for all 6 of us, a wonderful view that included several rainbows, a huge supply of books for us to peruse, and a short commute to town (~5 mins) and several beaches (~15 mins). We will definitely be back.

Peter it as a pleasure to host you, and, although we can't take credit for the rainbows, it is a sign you will return!
Perfect group trip to Culebra! The house was everything we were expecting. The one drawback was that one of the bedrooms does not have a door and is open to the rest of the house. However, it didn’t take away from our great vacation and stay!
Wonderful property been there multiple times. It was the background problems all virus related that made us leave early. Owners terrific in helping.

Thank you Walter! We are so happy we were able to help thru the current uncertainty and make sure you were all ok. Can't wait to have you back when this is all behind us!
The house and casita provided an excellent private home base for our vacation in Culebra. The beaches and town are easily within a short drive. The secluded hillside location is quiet and picturesque. An improvement would be a clothesline, especially since each person is allotted only two towels for the week and beach excursions are a major activity on Culebra and Culebrita. We had 6 adults and one child. It felt spacious and well supplied for preparing meals and leisure entertainment. This is a great vacation house.

Beautiful, Quiet, comfortable home.
We loved our stay in February of 2018. The island has revovered well from the hurricanes. Hillarys' home is well designed, open, airy and has a magnificent back deck that overlooks the bay. It is sunny in the early mornings and then wonderfully shaded in the hotter parts of the day. We could have spent the whole trip on the deck. We became addicted to the outdoor shower. Culebra is quiet, the beaches are amazing and the night sky is unspoiled and spectacular. The owners make staying here easy and welcoming...we highly reccommend it.

So glad we listened to Hillary and rented a Jeep no way could we have got up there in a UTV especially that last section of the driveway :-) Nice away from it all place, I love d the ambience furnishings etc felt very at home. Just to warn future travelers in Culebra right now most restaurants are closed and if you land on a Sunday you better rush to the supermarket before 1:00 p.m., difficult finding food! Great views and breezes, great family space but if couples then not much privacy, we utilized the little casita as there were two couples and that worked out great

Spectacular private setting for those seeking peace and solitude.
This was our second stay at Casa Estrella. It's perched very high on a steep hill with spectacular views and the most wonderful breezes. You must rent a 4WD to reach the house. as its completely private location is at the end of a steep dirt road. There's nothing more wonderful than breakfast on the big deck or dinner under the stars. We especially love this special house doesn't feel like a sterile rental unit. Rather it is a beloved family home with many wonderful books, great CDS and DVDS, games, art, etc. We love returning there after a day at the beach, taking an outdoor shower and savoring the complete peace here. The kitchen is very well appointed and there's a huge gas grill. Very special is a network of protected nature trails above the house. Hilary is a very experienced host and offers thorough information and support.

A lovely house - perfect for a family to enjoy time together and the island.
I stayed here with my two children (ages 13 and 15) and my friend and her two daughters (ages 13 and 16) for spring break and we all had a wonderful time. We were all able to fit in the house itself - with enough room for privacy and alone-time, as well as hanging out and playing board games at night time. We loved every last thing about this house - and even got used to the drive up the hill to get to it!
We didn't end up cooking anything other than breakfast at the house - primarily because no one wanted to be in charge of that - but the kitchen looked like it would be fine for cooking. The bedrooms were lovely, two of the kids fought over who got to sleep in the alcove, one of the kids slept in the couch in the living room, but we found it that didn't interfere with the use of the living room at all.
We loved the outdoor shower and found boogie boards in the mud-room. The house is so peaceful, so airy, so sweet. And close to everything (what isn't, I guess). We loved everything about it. And Hilary was so helpful and lovely to talk to. Jesse and Debora, who helped us in, were amazing too. Everyone was very kind and thoughtful.
Thank you so much!!!

Lovely retreat!
Our family of four rented this lovely hilltop home over Easter break. It has been lovingly decorated and has an AMAZING collection of DVDs, CDs, and coffee-table-style art, reference, and fiction books! We really enjoyed exploring these in our down time at the house and also enjoyed the gardens around the entryway.
Most of our time at Culebra was spent at the various beaches, with a new snorkel adventure every day. The snorkeling directly from the beaches was better here than any other Carribean Island we have explored! (We have been to many). The Coral were in excellent condition and the plant and animal life was so diverse, with very dynamic terrain. We saw turtles, rays, and squid on multiple days and even found an Octopus! The reefs that required hikes to assess the beaches allowed us nice options to escape the Easter weekend crowds as well.
This home is in an excellent location for exploring the island with a lovely view of the bay and hillside from the deck. The jeep ride up to the house was a bit intense the first time through, as it is very steep, but we got used to it after a couple of runs. :)
The only set-backs for us were that we had anticipated having access to the laudry machine (and packed lightly for the Flamenco flight to the island) but found out on arrival that we could not do laundry or take showers more than rinsing off the soap/conditioner since the island was experiencing a drought. As it turned out, it was not at all a big deal, but something to be aware of as a possibility.
Also, we had not noticed from the pictures and description that the master bedroom did not have a door and was open to the main space (and twin bed alcove). These are just items that could be important, depending on the group you are traveling with.
Overall, we had a wonderful experience at this house and my husband especially loved all of the open natural space that the property offered for him to practice his Thai Chi! This home had such a personal touch and a very playful personality to it that made it very unique! We would definitely stay here again!

Thank you for the review! We pride ourselves on creating a comfortable environment for our guests. The island does go thru periods of draught and we were happy to accommodate your request to use the washer dryer during your five day visit when you requested it. Most houses on the island practice the same kind of water conservation.
In terms of the layout of the house, homes in the Caribbean are open concept as is ours and we have always found people have enjoyed the flow and design of the house. Although it is true there isn't a "door" to the master bedroom it was a design choice to have a step down into the master where you turn a corner to a completely private master bedroom with direct access to the deck.
The twin alcove is described as such and the picture also represents that. Our guest casita provides a separate master suite as well which can be added to the rental.
Thanks for your comments and we were glad you enjoyed your stay.

Terrific Island Home
This was a lovely home for a stay on Culebra, located on the southern tip not far from Playa Punta Soldado. It is located at the top of a hill, behind a gate, and is quite secluded. There is a view of the bay and very wonderful breezes at all times. You can see two other homes on an adjacent hill in the distance, but beyond that, it is like you're all alone. A 4-wheel drive is a must to get up there.
The main home is an open layout with the living area, dining area and kitchen all flowing together. There is a lovely and large deck for outdoor dining or sitting. There are two bedrooms, each with a queen or full size bed (I don't recall which). There is also a sleeping alcove with a twin bed off the living area (it is quite open to the rest of the house). As noted in other reviews, this is open concept. In addition to the alcove, one of the bedrooms has no door and it is open at the top as well (for air flow I would presume). So, if you're looking for privacy and sound proof bedrooms, this is not the place. Our early risers puttering around the kitchen definitely stirred the the rest of the house.
The kitchen is stocked well enough if you want to cook. We prepared one full dinner and didn't lack necessary kitchen tools. A big grill outside makes cooking out easy. There was a supply of basics - spices, seasonings, oils, etc. They encourage you to bring drinking water, which we did.
Some reviews noted a limited supply of water. We didn't have any problems like that at all - plenty of hot and cold water, though we tried not to go wild on our use. Electricity was never an issue and the wifi was strong. Our Verizon phones, though, didn't get signal up there. There is no air-conditioning, but with the breezes it would not have been needed or wanted.
We also enjoyed the casita - a second cottage just above the main house. It has a queen bed, full bath, kitchenette and another lovely deck. This was a great escape and has all the privacy that the lower house may lack.
Kudos to owner Hilary who may have been one of the most responsive hosts I've interacted with. We booked right before Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, so I had some anxiety about even going. Hilary was great at assuring me and always quick to respond to messages. Thanks Hilary. And she also had a local caretaker Jesse who met us at the airport and helped get us situated.
We hope to return.
