Muricciaglia is a property of seventy hectares (one hundred and fifty acres) off the beaten path yet only five minutes drive from the medieval village of Castellina in Chianti and a few kilometers from Radda in Chianti. There are three houses, the main house where my husband Franco and I live, Ovile, the old sheep shed and Fienile. Il Fienile, the ancient stone built hay barn, is now a charming self contained villa surrounded by private terraces and large meadows: the view of fields and woods, as far as the eye can see, is lovely. The upper floor includes a master bedroom (a large glass door opens our onto an outdoor terrace) with bathroom en suite, another double bedroom, a second bathroom and a mezzanine. On the lower floor there is the living room with an open fireplace and a fully equipped kitchen that opens onto the wisteria covered pergola. Il Fienile has its own laundry room, central heating, telephone and satellite TV and WIFI.
The elegantly designed swimming pool is not far. Guests will find serenity and peace in our hideaway in the heart of Chianti Classico hills surrounded by olive orchards. Franco tends them and at every fall at harvest time the new green gold blesses our table.
We have been an expatriate family for many years. Franco working with EXXON Chemicals and travelling all the time, Mimma busy teaching Italian at Bruxelles Free University and growing the family. When it was time thinking of retirement, Tuscany was chosen after a long search, thanks to a sum of 'plus' factors as weather, landscape and culture. We bought a group of ancient rural dwellings and started to restore them shaping the wild land around. The children are gone now, they have their own families and live far away. Franco is busy with the olive groves, the vineyard and the woods. We produce extra virgin olive oil, Chianti Classico grapes and firewood. I take care of our guests who are coming back year after year to enjoy the Chianti atmosphere. Often they participate to the culinary program I started back in 1996, 'Tutti a Tavola', after the age-old call to dinner used by mothers throughout Italy. From the beginning our aim has been to share our 'family cooking' but also to open our home to friends coming from distant places.
Mimma Ferrando purchased this house in 1995
Mimma and Franco, it took us eleven years to finally return, and we are even more delighted to share your kindness, warmth, hospitality, humour and special gifts of cooking. It's truly a privilege to spend time with you both. Cheers!
We stayed 8 wonderful nights at Il Fienile in Radda in the Chianti region. Il Fienile is a charming little villa, once a stone-built hay barn several centuries old, perched on the top of the hill of the surrounding property of Murricciaglia. Surrounding us were the rolling hills of Chianti with the closest property visible as lights across the valley. It is surreally serene and beautiful, especially in the soft evening light.
Il Fienile itself has two proper bedrooms, one with the ensuite on the top floor, and two extra beds in a mezzanine type level you descend through to the living room and kitchen which are both on the ground floor. It is charming, rustic, quirky and very clean. The bedrooms are rustically appointed, with a double bed in the master and 2 twins in the other, all with clean sheets and warmer bedding as required; bathrooms are very clean and the kitchen is adequately equipped for simple meals.
It is located between Castellina (which is the closer) and Radda, two towns which will have all you need in terms of any groceries or daily necessities, and are in themselves very charming little Tuscan towns with eateries, shops, enotecas, and each with its own COOP supermarket. We chose the area because of its central location in Chianti and were not disappointed. It was possible to get to Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Lucca to name a few with minimal effort by car.
Mimma is the gorgeous owner of the property, a 79 year old spritely grandmother who communicates perfectly in English and attended to all our enquiries with incredible promptness, from suggestions about wineries, restaurants, information about the local area, tips about their ZTL restrictions (important for those driving!) She could not have been more helpful and we also had a cooking class with her which ended up not only in a lovely home-cooked meal, but also a bit of a roaming history lesson about the area, stories about life in Italy and her life which are intangibles we will always remember, and about Tuscan cooking.
We spent our time visiting the various towns, and then just sitting in the little garden outside the living room, surveying the rolling hills and the setting sun and watching the stars come out at night. The eternity pool was closed because of the cool weather, but we swopped swimming for walking the estate through the laneways.
It was a sublime experience at Il Fienile, made so by the setting, the charming villa of Il Fienile, and its owner, Mimma.
Our hosts were responsive, caring and delightful people.
My family of three (9 year old daughter) could not have enjoyed our two week stay at Il Fienile more. As wonderful as the cottage and the Muricciaglia property presented on the internet, our expectations were exceeded by our personal experience. There were certain things that we needed and wanted in our rental, and Il Fienile provided them all, and more: authentic villa accommodations with spacious bedrooms, plentiful closets, cozy living room, full kitchen, and outdoor dining; panoramic views; rustic beauty; scenic hikes on property through forest, streams, lavender fields, olive groves, and vineyards; starry nights interrupted only by the occasional flash of a firefly; the feeling of remoteness with the conveniences (grocery store, best gelateria in Tuscany, and restaurants) of Castellina or Radda just a short drive away; a BBQ grill; a luxurious private pool; owner hospitality and guidance; and safe grounds for my child to explore on her own.
The location also served as a perfect headquarters from which to explore the region. With a rental car, there are easy day trips or 1/2 day trips to any number of wonderful destinations. To name a few, we visited Siena, Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Colle di Val D'Elsa, Monterrigioni, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Pienza, Montichiello, Radda/Volpaia, Greve/Lamole, and Gaiole/Vertine. Within a short drive you can experience everything from a sophisticated tasting and tour of a Chianti winery to a visit to a local cashmere goat farm. I would recommend Il Fienile to all my friends and family. We are sure to return for another visit.
Our stay at Muricciaglia surpassed what I imagined staying in a Tuscan home would be like. The setting is stunning - on the Tuscan hills overlooking olive groves & vineyards and the home was picture perfect. My family of 4 stayed in Il Fienile and it was amazing! The house was full of character and charm, comfortable beds, very nice bathrooms, the bedrooms and living spaces were spacious and comfortable and the kitchen was well appointed. It was wonderful being able to open all of the doors and windows allowing the Tuscan breeze to blow through the home as well as being able to expand the living area to the outside. We really enjoyed spending time at the pool, eating meals under the grape arbor and our daily visits from the owner's sweet yellow lab! A highlight of our visit was taking a cooking class from the owner who runs a cooking school (Tutti a Tavola) with her sister. They are wonderful women and such fun to spend time with. The meal, their company and the experience was outstanding. I hope we are able to take another trip to Tuscany -- we'll stay here again in a heartbeat!
I rarely take the time to write reviews. Actually, now that I think about it, this is the first time. I'm writing because this place was fantastic! We are two 55+ couples (one from Barcelona and one from New Orleans) and had a great 6 days at Il Fienile. Usually web page photos far exceed what you find when you arrive. However, in this case, the accommodations were better than in the photos (larger and more expansive). The location feels very peaceful and remote but is only a short 5km drive away to the nearby towns of Radda and Catellina. Mimma was very helpful in recommending restaurants and giving tips about the area. And, even though the time of year did not require a fire (and the fireplace was cleaned for the spring/summer) we wanted one for the coziness factor. Franco went out of his way to restock firewood and kindling and we really enjoyed the fantastic fireplace. Finally, one member of our group forgot his iPhone in the house. Mimma went out of her way to ensure that it found its way safely back to New Orleans. It is a beautiful area to explore, but this home to return to each night made it even better. Thanks Mimma and Franco.
Muriccaglia was more than everything we ever expected from a country farm in the middle of Tuscany. We started each morning enjoying our coffee outside on the terrace overlooking the olives groves and the hills of Chianti. In the early evening, we watched the sun set behind the cypress trees sipping wine and eating olives. It was absolutely perfection. The property has a beautiful infinity pool that overlooks the hillside. We stayed at the Il Fienile cottage on the property which sits up on a hill overlooking the main house. The accommodations were very comfortable for two 55+ couples in addition to being quiet and serene. What made our stay more memorable was meeting Mimma and Franco along with Mimma’s sister Franca and her cousin LeLe who offered up some amazing cooking lessons. We are still talking about the special evening of cooking and eating at Mimma’s lovely home. Also, their sweet golden Lab, Dhabi, would make anyone feel welcomed. This vacation was a dream come true and more than exceeded our expectations. We found this to be an ideal location as a base to explore the quaint hillside towns of Tuscany. Thank you Mimma and Franco for welcoming us to your home and property.
From Fienile you can reach easily many of Tuscany beautiful sites. We'll always be there for advice, driving directions, special tips. You can consider one day sightseeing tour to S. Giminiano, Volterra, Colle Val d' Elsa. Pisa and Lucca. Arezzo and Cortona. Not to speak of Florence and Siena. There is a great choice of wine tasting tours in the Chianti area and south of Siena in the Brunello region.
