About the property

House, 6 Bedrooms, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 20)

The Lake Superior Barn is a 4,250 sq. foot home with 4 bathrooms and accommodations to easily sleep 20 people in the 6 bedrooms and 15 beds…. It is designed to accommodate multiple families with open bathrooms and individual toilets and showers. The home is just 30 minutes east of Duluth on the sandy south shore of Lake Superior.

Lake Superior Barn stands on 320 acres of remote wilderness and sandy beach. The home sits on the south shore of Lake Superior, staring across the lake to the North Shore cities of Duluth and Two Harbors whose lights twinkle in the distance at night. The property is completely surrounded by the Brule River State Forest so there is not another home on the Lake Superior shoreline for miles… Enjoy the secluded sandy beach or walk it like an ocean looking for beach-glass. Listen to the waves crash or swim in the cleanest of all the Great Lakes where the temperature can reach 60 or 70 degrees in the shallow, sandy bottom water. Warm up to a driftwood fire or roast s'mores on the waterfront.

Once back to the house, wash the sand off your feet in the outside shower while taking in the 180 degree view of Lake Superior. Enjoy the 1600 sq foot reclaimed deck just outside the beautiful kitchen and a pantry with all the extra ingredients and spices you may have forgotten. Build a fire with firewood provided in the stone fireplace or lay in a bean bag and pick a book to read from the stocked bookshelves in the loft. Lake Superior Barn has 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and 3 showers built from the reclaimed lumber, steel and nails of 7 turn of the century Minnesota barns. The game room has radiant concrete heat to warm your toes as you play ping pong, video games, shuffle board or lounge on the couch to watch a movie on the Apple TV.

The Lake Superior Barn is a unique and rustic experience... there is a TV, but no satellite or cable TV... plenty of cards, books and boardgames! We do have APPLE TV... like a large iPod with movies, TV shows & music.

On the 320 acres of forest, there are trails through the woods and bridges over Haukkula Creek that flows the length of the property. Pick raspberries and wild strawberries in the summer or snowshoe the woods and trails in the winter… either way, you will never encounter another person on the private and secluded land. End the day by building a fire while overlooking Lake Superior and watch the summer sun set over the hills of Duluth.

About Tom Wolfe

We have 5 kids... 4 boys and 1 girl. We live in Minneapolis, MN. Enjoy 'the Barn...'

Thanks, Tom & Nicole and Kids

Tom Wolfe purchased this house in 2007

Why Tom Wolfe chose Northwest

We fell in love with the Lake, the sound of the waves, the endless sandy beach and the fact that you are 30 minutes from an amazing city like Duluth, but you feel so remote and surrounded by nature.

What makes this house unique

The property is totally remote and surrounded by State forest... you will very likely not see another person. The reclaimed home is unique and the feel is rustic. The beach is secluded and it feels like you are on an ocean.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I am writing just to let you know what a lovely time we had at the Barn. The detail that went into designing the Barn is amazing. The winding road leading up to the Barn and it's placement on hundreds of acres make this stay remote, cozy, rustic and yet luxurious. It has all the amenities you would want with still feeling like your not in a polished cabin. We had 8 people and everyone had their space and we still had plenty of room for more. The view is amazing. We had a fabulous time exploring and just enjoying each other and the Barn.

Thank you!

A Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This really exceeded our expectations. We saw the pictures on the website and thought, wow, it looks nice. Then when we arrived, it was even nicer than the pictures. A group of 11 of us spent 3 nights at the barn. There were 4 couples and 3 singles. Each couple got their own bedroom and the singles shared the upstairs loft bedrooms. It worked out perfectly. Plenty of bathrooms and beds. A few of us work in restaurants cooking/bartending so we made lots of elaborate meals. There was plenty of equipment and supplies to cook for 11 adults easily...once we figured out the trick to the cooktop. (ask the caretaker) With two refrigerators, there was plenty of room to store the food.

Tons of firewood for the fireplace, hot tub, sauna and fire pit. We used all of them. Even with 11 adults, there was plenty of room for everyone to do their own thing, or hang out together. And, splitting the cost 11 ways made for a very cost effective getaway.

There's movies, classic video games, ping pong, shuffle board, board games, trails and lots of books. There is no wi-fi and cell coverage is you have plenty of excuses not to do any work. :-)

Highly recommended.

Summer in Northern Wisconsin

  • 4 of 5

About 12 of our family spent a week over July 4th at the Barn. 4 adult couples fit well into the 4 double bed rooms on the first and second floor. Four children were comfortable in the 3rd floor bedrooms. The house was spacious and well equipped to handle us. The views of the lake from the North balcony and seating were great. The lawn to the North of the house was perfect for yard activities. Trips to Bayfield gave us some small town sites and the Brule River State Park was excellent hiking and kayaking.

Garidods Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Coming from an urban area, we are constantly concerned with our kids being at risk from traffic and strangers. The days of kids being kicked out by mothers till the street lights come on, are long gone. Our kids have a much tighter circle of exploration and time to just be out in nature. When we saw this vacation spot we decided to give our kids the space to explore and be outdoors. We loved it! For 7 days our kids played on the beach, explored paths, collected rocks, played games like Red Rover and ran around with sparklers. We even threw them out of the house when they said they were bored and within an hour their imaginations had taken over and eight kids from age of 11-3 created a world of espionage in the most elaborate game of tag we had ever seen. The parents enjoyed reliving a bit of their childhoods through their kids.

The barn easily accommodated us, and we even had plenty of room to spare. The main living area was spacious and beautiful. The kitchen was large and is fully equiped with cooking and dining utensils. It just invited us all to cook together. Bedrooms and bathrooms are designed beautifully and comfortable. The game room downstairs had us connecting with the kids by playing the games we had before video games. We did take advantage of their Apple TV and would settle the kids down each night with one of their children's movies.

The outside space of the barn is just as beautiful with all the little touches by the owners plus that of previous visitors. Various bones, rocks and driftwood have been collected by guests and can be found displayed in various spots. The kids loved the bones the most! They had a great fire pit, basketball hoop, tire swing, tight rope and of course the hot tub. We had no issues with ticks or poison ivy which was the only concern we had.

The caretaker was a great friendly guy who clued us in on some of the best place to explore. It was great to just listen to how the property had all come together.

We highly recommend this beautiful vacation spot! Already trying to arrange a week at one of their other properties.

Perfect for a family Christmas in the Northwoods

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed spending the Christmas holiday together at this very special place. The property is very well-maintained. The Barn is well-appointed and provides great space for family time by the fire. The views of the Lake, as well as the twinkling lights of Duluth across the bay, were the perfect back drop to nighttime bonfires. We especially enjoyed exploring the trails and finding the beaver clearing, beaver lodge and dam. The Barn is truly an ideal setting for a large group of friends and family.

Very disappointed with how the owners handled problems with their property!

  • 1 of 5

We were very disappointed to arrive to a freezing cold barn for the weekend of our daughter's wedding. We arrived on a very cold Thursday and did not have any heat until late afternoon on Friday. Alarms and the power went off through our entire first night, which we had to repeatedly tend to. The owners have brushed off our concerns saying they did the best they could. The property is beautiful, the owners not so good!

Beautiful Group Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect getaway for a large group. We had a fantastic time reconnecting...a group of 18 friends. Despite the cold, rainy weather, we had more than enough to do. Warm cozy fires, ping pong and shuffleboard tourneys, a dip in the wood-fired hot tub and sauna. We left renewed and refreshed. Beautiful and breathtaking barn, property, and lake. Everything was well maintained, in working condition, and spotlessly cleaned. This was our second visit as a group and we'll be coming back again. We just love it! Thank you for your hospitality and great customer service.
