About this property

Charming cottage on seaside estate offers gorgeous views, private beaches

"Little Driftwood" is a sweet and cozy, very small cottage with a rustic minimalist style, a gorgeous water view, and full access to the beaches and other riches of the historic seaside estate where it is situated.

One of the most beautiful hidden gems of the New England coast, the estate has been in our family since the 1860s, and is dotted with old mansions and other houses (about 20 in total), all still belonging to descendants of the original owner, who was a state governor and Civil War general. It comprises fifty-five rolling acres of meadows, forest, marshgrass and rocky granite shoreline, with a white-sand crescent beach, a silvery flat mica beach, a granite swimming pier, a lily pond, and a wild peninsula where you can fish for striped bass or just contemplate the waves. It's excellent for kayaking (bring your own or rent in nearby Rockport), and also has two tennis courts and a playground, all overlooking the sea. It's a small paradise for nature lovers, from the tidal pools out on the rocks to the incredible variety of avian visitors, including snowy egrets, belted kingfishers, and occasional bald eagles. Spring 2022 even brought a whale sighting, visible from the living room & front lawn of Little Driftwood!

The house contains two main rooms. The living room has a cast-iron fireplace and a remote-operated skylight; the bay window overlooks the meadow, cove, and open sea beyond. The other room contains the kitchen on one end (small oven, no dishwasher or microwave, but otherwise standard) and the bedroom area (with queen bed) on the other.

There is a lovely little grassy area in front of the house where you can sit and enjoy the view. A short path from the house takes you to the granite swimming pier, and both beaches are less than a three-minute's walk away.

Little Driftwood sits between “Big” Driftwood and the estate's tennis courts. The courts are in use only intermittently and the house is shielded by a line of trees and shrubs, so noise usually isn't a problem.

Sleeps up to 3 (a twin-sized mattress is available to be placed on the floor), though the small size makes it best suited for a single person or couple. Bathroom has stall shower. Washer/dryer are shared with another nearby cottage and are located in that cottage's exterior-access closet, just up the pebble path. There is no AC or central heating; the skylight helps cool the place, and we provide fans and space heaters.

Little Driftwood is a charming cottage with gorgeous water view, in a 55 acre private coastal oasis replete with two lovely beaches accessed by pleasant elevated pathways above the otherwise rocky coastline. It is proximate to the wonderful town centers of both Gloucester and Rockport.

Slice of Heaven

The cottage is a charming escape situated on a property that is a slice of heaven. It was the perfect setting for tide pooling, bird watching and relaxing on the New England coast. A short drive from Rockport and Gloucester, it was the perfect location for a short getaway.

Loved this place!

The cottage is rustic but charming. It had everything we needed and more (some food items that were nice to have on hand, for example). The hosts were super kind, generous, and communicative. Having the fireplace, the incredible view, and the opportunity to walk around the trails along the coast made it a really special place.

A special spot!

Little Driftwood cottage was simply magical and charming. Beautiful, serene, quiet and right by the ocean! Perfect for a couple or small family. A short lovely walk to beaches. Beautiful nature surrounded us at very turn. We really enjoyed our stay and Bonnie and her daughter were attentive and made sure we were very comfortable. Look forward to booking here again in the future!

The cottage was neat as a pin, very well equipped, and the bed was extremely comfortable—but the view from the living room onto the bay was absolutely outstanding, as were the surroundings! We throughly enjoyed sitting for hours on the rocks by the ocean, taking in the birds and the lobster boats! We loved the property so much we had to tear ourselves away from it to visit other parts of Cape Ann! Rockport is a stone’s throw away and Gloucester a 20mn drive with great places to eat. The cottage was easy to find thanks to great directions from Bonnie and Elizabeth could not have been a more gracious and helpful host! Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality!

Our stay was very nice at Little Driftwood. We shared a walking path with the bigger house and the host Bonnie. She and her daughter are so communicative and really help with anything you need. We had all the items needed to stay in if wanted, but also had a short drive to either Rockport or Gloucester. The shower was a stall so a little short for my husband who is very tall. The view from the house and little beaches around the property are amazing!

Bonnie and Elizabeth are wonderful host. They made sure we feel welcomed and comfortable. The cottage is small and cozy and the view was excellent. I will definitely come back to Driftwood, but maybe a different cottage which is more spacious.
