We had a lovely stay and the walkability to Hawthorne and Division was great. So many restaurants and shops to keep busy for a casual weekend.

The home is a well a preserved Craftsman style house. The books, magazines, art and objects within reflect the interests of a "Renaissance man" encompassing in a wide range of intellectual, artistic and physical pursuits that provided an entertaining interior venue. Stewart's recommendations regarding restaurants were spot on. overall, our stay was very pleasant.

Family visit

Wonderful, well stocked & welcoming home--rich in history and information--in a great neighborhood. Close walk to great spots--Division, Hawthorne, Clinton districts. Perfect for our extended family visit to our son who lives a few blocks away. Stuart was very responsive & informative--very easy/uncomplicated process. Would definitely stay again!

Stuart is the host with the most, from providing refreshments to welcome us to clear instructions on how to use appliances, etc. He was quick to respond to questions. He even left a cauldron of Halloween candy for us to pass out to trick-or-treaters.
We visited the Tillamook Creamery and Tunnel Beach, only 1.5 hours from Portland.

What a delightful home!

This place is amazing. I wish we had more than just two nights there. Stuart obviously loves , beer, bourbon and whiskey, his heritage, food, books, and music. This home is jammed packed with information and love. I could spend months there and still only scratch the surface! The nicest touch was the simple act of providing us with everything we could need, even the makings of a fun breakfast complete with a citrus press that we used to make our own delicious hand-pressed orange juice! Great house, great neighborhood! We’ll be back again!

John Barleycorn for the win!!

The John Barleycorn home feels like HOME!! Stuart was an amazing host and made you feel so welcomed in his home. He was available for questions/requests and gave many great suggestions for shopping, restaurants, and other things to do. The art in the home was perfectly curated to the space. It was a charming whimsical space to be for the five days we were there. Everything you can imagine you would need was thoughtfully planned, from the well stocked kitchen, to the extra medications and razors in the linen closets. The beds were SO comfortable, as well. The backyard was artsy, private, and quiet. The neighborhood was close to everything. It was an incredible stay! I cannot wait to come back to Stuart's place. He is a gem of a human!

Absolute Perfection

Love pretty much everything about this charming, wonderful house. The host was very kind & communicative, finding & getting into the place was a breeze, and the location was beautiful- an older, quiet neighborhood with huge trees and lovely old homes - but literally 5 minutes away from anything you could ever want. The house is quirky with a very unique setup and lots of squeaky floors. But it was appointed with anything you could possibly need for a little getaway. From a sauna, to an excellent array of music and musical instruments, to very comfortable beds & bedding, it was really just perfect. I can't say enough nice things. The tiny considerations that the host makes, from helpful but not obnoxious notes everywhere, to a fantastic selection of teas, a rice cooker... really anything you can think of and might need. They even left us apples & nuts to enjoy, as well as small cartons of milk and half & half for our coffee. What a charming, lovely, PERFECT place.

Eclectic Portland Home

The owner takes their job as host very seriously, which is not a bad thing! The beds were comfortable, there was plenty of towels, stocked medicine cabinet with necessities, coffee/ tea bar, lots of instructions for how to make ourselves comfortable and make our way around the home and neighborhood. Location is great, only a couple blocks walking distance from lots of shops and food spots. For someone who likes minimalistic atmospheres, however- this place is not for you. The home is filled with eclectic odds and ends, making it quite busy. There are only 2 true bedrooms with big enough beds for an adult. There is a kids room with a kids mattress and trundle bed, and another small room with a twin mattress. I wish we had known the layout before booking as some of our party opted for a hotel to find more comfort. Two of the three toilets are also hidden in a bedroom (one without a door) which made for an awkward stay. Otherwise we found what we were looking for in this spot- a place to sleep and gather between outings.

A very unique and cozy home. Not that it's small, but there are many places to relax in comfort.Stuart has provided something for everyone - whether kids, music lovers (instruments and at least 3 technologies for playing recorded music), lovely backyard garden that we didn't get to enjoy because Portlandrain... the list goes on.And Stuart was tremendously helpful in giving us information on activities, both through the many guides he has written and left in the home, and via text messages.
