Overview

About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia nestled in a grove of sugar maples between Back Creek and Little Mountain. Wake up to valley views which are likely to include deer grazing in the meadow, hummingbirds at the feeder, or a Bald eagle or great blue heron fishing along the creek. This 28 acre property includes a sunny meadow with beautiful mountain views, picnic table by the creek and a mountain to climb!

The tastefully decorated cabin includes a master bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds, one bathroom with laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, open living/dining area with cozy wood stove, a covered porch and a deck with hot tub and outdoor dining area with a gas grill. At the Cabin on Back Creek, you can enjoy the stars which light up the night sky, bird-watching, walking, or just relaxing with a book in the hammock, on the porch, or on the deck. In the early spring, we make maple syrup at the sugar house located adjacent to the Cabin. You are invited to watch (and smell!) the process of turning 40 gallons of sugar water into a gallon of pure maple syrup - or you can help us if you would like!

There are a variety of hunting and fishing opportunities nearby, and access to the George Washington National Forest is just two miles down the road.

The Cabin is located 16 miles from the quaint town of Monterey. Walking tours, galleries and shops, restaurants, beautiful mountain views, and friendly people make Highland County special all year round. Throughout the year, Monterey hosts numerous special events, the largest of which is the Highland County Maple Festival in March.

Located about 30 miles from Snowshoe Ski Resort, skiing, snowboard and tubing are available in season. Also nearby is the narrow-gauge railroad at Cass, West Virginia and the National Radio Observatory at Green Bank, WV.

Twenty miles south of the Cabin on Back Creek in neighboring Bath County are the towns of Warm Springs and Hot Springs, home to the historic Homestead resort and the Jefferson Pools mineral baths. These neighboring towns offer fine dining, golf, skiing/snowboarding, shopping, antiquing, chamber music at Garth Newel and a variety of art galleries.

The Cabin on Back Creek offers a peaceful retreat, surrounded by a variety of recreational opportunities.

About Valerie & Pat Lowry

Pat has lived on Back Creek his entire life and has been making maple syrup since he was eight years old. Living in Highland County has taught him to literally 'live off the land'. Pat built the Cabin himself, his wife, Valerie did the decorating.

Valerie & Pat Lowry purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Valerie & Pat Lowry chose Shenandoah Valley

After purchasing 'the sugarbush' to make maple syrup from the trees located there, we decided to share this little piece of heaven with others

What makes this cabin unique

The Cabin on Back Creek is a sanctuary to renew your spirit, unplug from the hectic pace of life, gain inspiration from the beauty of nature and generally chill out!

Heaven on Earth!!!

  • 5 of 5

A nature lovers paradise!!! A wonderful experience in so many ways- the wildlife, the creek, the beauty of the mountain and pastures, the rich history, the local way of life, of course the cabin with all its loveliness, the syrup!, and the owners Pat and Valerie , we are so blessed for meeting them!!! They took their time to give us a tour of their amazing syrup making art. It's hard work and art at the same time. We learned so much and find their "sugar camp" just amazing. We just arrived home and miss it all already!!! We hope to go back in the winter!!! What a find.... blessings abound. Terry and Ricky

A wonderful, restful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We came back after five years, with our 6- and 14-year old children. Our stay was absolutely lovely - The Cabin on Back Creek Farm is meticulously maintained, very clean and spruce, and very comfortable. We enjoyed the chaise lounges by Upper Back Creek, grilling and eating outdoors, walking around the property on the freshly mown path, cooking in the lovely kitchen, and the cool breezes. Our kids were excited to explore Upper Back Creek (under supervision, of course!), to play outside, and to go with us exploring the mountains. We used the Cabin as a base for watching the Perseid meteor shower, as we had five years ago. We took several day trips - the Garth Newel Music Center for an awesome, relaxed jazz concert; the Green Bank Observatory; hiking at Seneca Rocks, and exploring Highland County. We felt utterly at home - as a city mouse and a vagabond occasional country mouse, this escape to peace, quiet, and privacy was relaxing and refreshing. Chatting with Valerie and Pat at the sugar shack, sampling their innovative maple syrups, and getting their advice on things to do, were all unexpected bonuses. We will be back!

Absolutely perfect

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was amazing! My husband and I were looking for a last minute getaway to share with our baby before my hubby had to leave on deployment. The owners made special arrangements for us to be able to stay there, and I am so incredibly grateful that they did.

We got out of the truck and our moods instantly shifted from stressed and worried, to totally relaxed and in awe of how beautiful the cabin was. The light was coming through the trees just right, the creek was close by and soothing and the inside was beautifully decorated and very clean. We loved making smores on the fire pit that looks over the water, relaxing in the hot tub, and playing games and watching movies by the fire inside. The kitchen was stocked with every kitchen gadget we needed (even some pantry staples), and the bbq on the porch was great.

We'll never forget our trip here and can't wait to go back. We're so thankful to the owners for working with us to make this vacation happen. We plan for this to be our new family tradition.

Great place to get away from it all. Can't wait to come back

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at the Cabin and are already looking forward to our next visit. We didn't get to ski as planned due to some unseasonably warm weather, but we got to go hiking instead which we loved. Locust Springs was a great suggestion for a hike and didn't see another person on the trail the entire time! Pat and Val were making maple syrup and gave us a little taste and tour of the sugar shack where they make their syrup. We even took a couple of bottles home with us.

A piece of heaven on earth!

  • 5 of 5

Cabin at Back Creek is idyllic - a perfect little log cabin situated on a maple farm right on a beautiful creek with a mountain view in your front and back yards. It's decorated perfectly and Valerie even had a beautiful Christmas tree decorated for our visit. The wood stove was cozy and warm. The bathroom is updated and gorgeous, as are both bedrooms and the entire cabin, actually. You can see that a lot of time and care have been put into every detail of this cabin and the experience. Valerie and Pat are lovely, welcoming people - you will want to meet them and take a tour of the sugar house! The cabin was immaculately clean and well appointed. If you're looking for the perfect peaceful, beautiful get away, this is it!
