About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Laketown Beach Cottage is tucked in at the base of the protected dunes, as close as possible to Lake Michigan.

Unique, private area in natural wooded setting with access to Laketown Beach stairs and dunes. Though you cannot see the lake from the cottage, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the pristine natural lakeshore and white sand dunes within a 10-15 minute walk over the dune the cottage sits on.

Not necessarily for the faint of heart as the natural dunes are very steep- but well worth the effort!

Make your way down to the beach for sunbathing, swimming, picnics and miles of white sandy shoreline!

The cottage offers cozy, simplistic, unplugged ambiance with all the necessities;

Bedroom with bunk beds, private loft area with queen size bed and small sofa bed in the living area. The screened-in porch offers additional dining/living area and opens onto the wrap-around deck. Outdoor furniture, gas grill and a fire pit allows for added relaxation.

Recent upgrades include new flooring, TV/DVD Player, gas grill and NEW WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM.

Also included- linens, towels, kitchen cookware, dishes, small appliances, beach towels and chairs.

Guestbook comments from the manager

" We had the most amazing weekend+! Beautiful weather, lots of cooking out on the grill- Spent Friday evening on the beach all night, water was as smooth and calm as I've ever seen Lake Michigan. We had to cool off in the water from the hike up the dunes. Sunday we went to the highest point of the dune, well worth the journey to see an absolutely wonderful sunset and stunning views of the amazing coastline for miles & miles.

We were sad to have to leave but my WIFE and I got married that day~ Fantastic 5 days at the Laketown Cottage!! Thanks for everything,"

Rustic charm near the lake

  • 4 of 5

The cottage had everything we needed-- little touches like snacks, bottled water, cleaning supplies that included all the necessities to enjoy the kitchen and the washer/dryer were much appreciated. The property manager and the owner were responsive to our questions and concerns and provided us all we needed. It's a place for people who would prefer to be unplugged from internet and cable. TV service is intermittent. Verizon cell phones worked for texting and internet. Coffee or breakfast on the deck, a walk over the dune to the beach to enjoy Lake Michigan or the sunset, and short trips to Saugatuck and Holland were highlights of our visit. The Saugatuck Chamber Music Festival, Felt Mansion, Douglas Beach Park, Palazzalo's Dairy Outlet, The Southerner, 205 Coffee Bar, and Lemonjello's Coffee are all less than 15 minutes away.

Amazing vacation rental!

  • 5 of 5

Wow!!! What an amazing place! Location was absolutely fabulous! Very clean, comfortable, and private. The beach is so close, and the sunset views are amazing. (like 5 min or less to walk) If you love the outdoors, and the woods, this is your spot. If you are a city slicker, its only a 10 min drive to two different towns. Internet junkies, this is not a spot for you. Cell phone and texting/internet very very very limited. GREAT getaway.

Rustic Charm

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at this cottage in the woods from a Wednesday to a Saturday. We really enjoyed our stay and loved the feel of the location. Beautiful wooded lot and peacefully quite....except for the shouts of my two and four year kiddos! The place had its pros and its cons. We loved it there and plan on returning. However, if you are looking for a sparkling resort vacation place....this is probably not your cup of tea. The cottage has aged well, but still has that smell of an aged house (a little musty). We opened all of the windows and by day two, the smell was almost gone. There are mothballs scattered around the perimeter to keep critters away so you will get that smell as well. Yep....the water is hard. If you have never experienced well water, then this may come as a shock. The water has a sulfur smell and a slight ting in color (i.e. toilet water is a little yellow). That's just the life of living with a well. It isn't dangerous or harmful. I don't like the taste of sulfur water so we grabbed two cases of water from costco before we came and that sustained us nicely! The cottage was a perfect size for my little family and we loved the rustic feel inside. I do admit that I was a little off-put by a few things that needed cleaning a little more thoroughly (i.e. inside the windowsills when I opened them), but hey.....we are in a rustic setting and it isn't like there is a hotel staff there everyday for cleaning service and turn down! I rolled with it!!! We did smell gas from the grill when we turned it on and my husband could hear gas escaping. We suspected a bad propane tank so we did not get to grill while we were there :(...However the owner did pop by to check on it for us. It was spectacular location with a quick hike to the beach. We never did find the path to the additional property the cottage owner has, but we LOVED the public access portion and got some STELLAR sunset pictures. My kiddos had a wonderful time! We built a fire in the fire pit every night and enjoyed lots of smores and hotdogs!!!! I really wish I could put up some pictures on here to show you all how beautiful the area is. We were also a short drive to both Saugatuck and Holland. If you get a chance, take a hike down to the Saugatuck State Park beach....BEAUTIFUL!!! (it is a hike though).

Floors are dirty and furniture is stained and in poor condition. Both inside porches have strong musty and moth ball smell that renders them unusable. Windows don't really open easily or at all to air out. Bathroom is run down with tiny shower. If you want rustic and don't mind dirty you'll do fine--if not, avoid. Property manager loves to argue.

Owner's Response: Courtney, So sorry that you were not satisfied with your stay at Laketown~ You're right- rustic is not for everyone. Others love the opportunity to be in a natural setting near the beach and enjoy the dunes at an affordable price. Had you let me know of your dissatisfaction while at the cottage, I may have been able to make a change or some kind of compensation. There have been some upgrades with new furniture and rugs since your stay. Thank you just the same, K

Peaceful getaway

  • 4 of 5

The Laketown Cottage was quaint and quiet, perfect for our family vacation. The price is very fair and the cottage is in good condition. I do recommend that you bring drinking water. If you have a young child that isn't yet ready for the shower, you may also want to bring a portable baby bath - we had to use the sink to give our toddler a bath, which was definitely fine as we are adaptable people. But there is only a shower available and our toddler isn't yet too keen on taking showers. We enjoyed the quietness of the location and feeling secluded, yet being very close to Lake Michigan. It was very peaceful.
