Our family visited Cape Charles to explore the Eastern Shore of Virginia years ago. We found that Cape Charles provides a great balance of activity, history, nature, and relaxation. With our busy schedules, we look forward to visits to "the shore" and have come to appreciate Southern Comfort on the Bay more than we ever imagined.
Debbie Suddeth purchased this house in 2008
Our home is one of the nicest in Cape Charles, and we talk a lot of pride in maintaining the home to keep it clean, updated and comfortable for guests.
Our first visit to Cape Charles was wonderful in Southern Comfort! The home was amazingly renovated with great attention paid to retaining the historic features while providing comfortable updates! The bedrooms were beautifully appointed, comfortable and charming. Having bikes provided by the homeowner was a nice surprise and greatly appreciated. The town is charming - we enjoyed two nights out for dinner, but the well-appointed kitchen enabled us to eat in as well. Thank you so much for allowing us to have a very relaxing, wonderful vacation in your beautiful home!
My family of six adults gathered here for a significant weekend for us, one of celebration and memories for a dearly departed family member and friend. We traveled to Cape Charles to sail aboard a Tall Ship, which made a special stop and journey into the Chesapeake Bay to honor and remember one of their own. We were entirely comfortable at Southern Comfort, really delighted with this truly special home, obviously so well-maintained by its owners, and we would have enjoyed staying longer for just all this area has to offer. Amenities have carefully provided, and the home has been beautifully restored - the perfect blend of historical and modern. I am pleased to hear the homeowners are beginning work now on the house next door which I am sure will also be wonderful when completed. We were ideally a very short walk to Cape Charles shops and restaurants and the beach - and enjoyed meeting so many hospitable townspeople. We thank the homeowners for this introduction to Cape Charles and their Southern Comfort on the Bay and thank them for working with us as our schedule evolved, making sure the home was perfectly cleaned and stocked for our arrival, beach puzzles ready in the parlor! Thank for you the kind note and flowers, too, a special touch; we'll be looking for happy reasons to return!
This home was absolutely perfect for our vacation needs - and even better than we'd expected. The pictures indicate that it is nice, but in-person, it is fantastic. We were delighted when we walked in the door to find a comfortable layout, nice furniture, an upgraded kitchen (which was good for us since we cook), beautiful bathrooms, and three pleasantly-decorated bedrooms with very comfortable beds. The attention to detail and blend of new and vintage/antique items complements this renovated Victorian house's feel very well. Cape Charles was our kind of town: small, walkable, and distinct. There are only several restaurants on the downtown strip (a ten minute walk from the house), but we enjoyed them, as well as the art galleries and antique store. Kelly’s Pub, in particular, has great atmosphere, and there is a coffee shop where locals congregate for breakfast. There are also good restaurants in driving distance (we recommend Aqua, with dining on the water) in and near Cape Charles. The beach is a fifteen minute walk down tree-lined residential streets. (Make sure you walk by the local library, which is housed in a renovated old church.) We visited off-season, and had a stretch of beach to ourselves - a quiet and pleasant time, ideal for our 9-month-old's first beach experience. My husband spent an afternoon kayaking on nearby Fisherman's Island (a wildlife reserve). If you’re looking for a quiet, lovely beach spot and a town with a good amount of local history and culture, we recommend Cape Charles! And we give a hearty five stars to Southern Comfort on the Bay; we’d love to stay there again.
This house was a wonderful place to vacation! The house is cutely decorated, the furniture was very nice and the house is quite large & spacious. We were very surprised by the large & open floorplan on the 1st floor. It's definitely been modernized! The kitchen had all of the basic cooking supplies & the indoor grill was neat. We went shopping for groceries the 1st day & we loved eating all but three of our meals at home. The bedrooms were large & cute! The game room was well stocked with games...chess, checkers, many staple games (Scrabble, Sorry, etc.) plus a puzzletable with one started for us upon our arrival, clever! We never would've started a puzzle on our own, but we found ourselves drawn to it, finished it during our trip & really enjoyed it a lot, very relaxing! The main master bedroom has a nice sitting area. Our daughter loved her own room - she slept in one twin bed while her dolls slept in the other. She really loved her room & had plenty of room to play. The other master bedroom was also very spacious - we used it for our son's pack n'play that he slept in & there was a lot of walking room throughout the room even with that set up. Also nice, the fact that we didn't have to bring our own sheets nor clean any of it before our departure. The bed sheets were SO soft & the mattresses very comfy! And our favorite feature-dual zone central air!! It is a great beach house.
Cape Charles is an interesting & cute town. Friendly locals. If you are looking for a busy beach town with attractions & boardwalks, this is NOT it. You will not find tons of shops to peruse, in fact we never went shopping. If you are looking for tons of restaurants, you won't find tons in the area. BUT we weren't looking for that! We were looking for relaxation, quiet & just going to the beach with our young kids. We wanted to cook/eat at home to save money, just go the beach & that's exactly what we got. The local beach is a hidden gem! The beach is VERY uncrowded, there were times that we were the only people on the beach for what we could see. No lifeguard. Free parking. Being on the bay, it's VERY calm water, VERY WARM water (think bath water) & very shallow for quite a ways out. Bring floating raft/tubes to just float & relax. There is plenty of sandy beach for the kids to build castles & they had fun searching for hermit crabs & water snails which were in abundance. It's perfect for young kids. We had a blast! Debbie is a great host with lots of great tips! ENJOY!
We had a wonderful stay. The porch was a terrific place to begin the day and relax after a day at the beach. It was great to have the central air conditioning. There are good restaurants in this most friendly town, and you can be as busy or as lazy as you want to be. The house is very attractively and comfortably furnished. Our laptop worked great with the wireless connection. Debbie was always easily accessible by e-mail and really seemed to care that we had a successful vacation.
Had the best week ever in this beautifully remastered home. Great kitchen, baths, everything. Short walk to the beach, and to shops and the local library. Everyone in Cape Charles was so friendly, and we loved that the beach was not crowded. Loved the local seafood and the historical area.
