Unique, Beautiful, Artistic, Historic Completely restored adobe.
Casa Betita is a completely restored historic adobe dating back to the mid 1800’s. Casa Betita was home to generations of the same family until 2007. Since then, the house has been completely restored offering the finest elements of the 21st century with the charm, colors, textures and décor of true New Mexico including hand plastered walls, Kiva fireplaces, vintage rugs and the artwork of local artists.
You can hear the waters of the Rio Pueblo and listen to Coyote’s gathering in the evening. The neighborhood horses and one donkey can be heard calling to each other and occasionally one might hear the bells from the church down the lane. This is not your ordinary impersonal vacation rental. This is a well loved home with many unusual and special details.

About Melissa Howden
I am an artist / writer / filmmaker / producer. I work and live primarily in California but love my home in New Mexico where my parents and grandparents from both sides were born and raised. When I am in Taos I spend time improving the garden, season by season, skiing and horseback riding, I also get some of my most important creative work done in the house which seems especially conducive to creative thought and activity. I am usually found with my co-pilot Dot, a 16-year-old Jack Russell Terrier.
Melissa Howden purchased this House in 2007
Why Melissa Howden chose Taos Pueblo
Taos is a special place of many stories. History is rich here, and the journey of each visitor under the vast canopy of sky adds another layer to the richness of the place. Experience Taos for yourself. You will be changed and fulfilled. Northern New Mexico also has two generations of family history for me, so when the opportunity came to care for this house and restore it, I jumped at the chance. I did not purchase this house as a vacation rental as much as this house chose me. I purchased it as a home. I was able to live in Taos for two years but economic conditions and work called me back to the big city, for now.
What makes this House unique
A pleasant 15-20 minute walk past horses, alfalfa fields and through back lanes to Taos Historic Plaza, shops and galleries, this is a home you will want to return to year after year. Taos is a year round destination offering breathtaking views, intriguing history and intimate privacy making for the ultimate relaxing and healing getaway. Unlike many vacation rentals I supply everything except your food—the woodpile is continuously stocked, the propane for the grill, organic linens and soap, even robes. If you are a looking for a special Taos experience, Casa Betita is the place. My home is dog friendly for up to two small to medium dogs.

Great Ski Vacation with Kids
Can't say enough about how awesome this house is and how helpful the owner was throughout our stay. We stayed here and went skiing at Angel Fire and Taos Ski Valley throughout the week of spring break. Very close to town and easy in/out to the ski resorts. The house is much bigger than I expected from the pictures, and has a huge front, side, and back yard for the kids to play throughout the week. We used the hot tub several times and it worked great, was already hot when we opened the lid so didnt even have to wait for it to warm up. Very peaceful and calm backyard, the fence makes it feel like a private secluded compound even though it is nestled amongst a few other houses in the little village (I am sure there is a proper new mexican name for the village). There were little laminated notes all over the house to help with things like; which way to turn the knob on the shower to make it hot, or how much higher should I set the oven when baking cookies at altitude which were very helpful. Oh ya, cant forget the heated floors which were a huge surprise in the middle of the first night when the temps got down into the teens! Not sure if the heat is primarily generated via the floor heating system, but the house was extremely warm (no matter how low we set the thermostats) throughout the entire cold stay which had us watching TV a few evenings with the doors open to cool things down even though it was in the teens outside. Also, not enough can be said as to how furnished this house is. When she says she provides everything except food, she means it which was extremely helpful. We made a few trips to the walgreens and grocery store for medicine and small food items, but everything else was included right down to the plastic glasses for enjoying wine in the hot tub! Would definitely stay here again if returning to Taos and would definitely recommend to anyone else!
Happy that you had a great time and the house made you and your family feel welcome. The house is indeed heated by radiant heat. As noted in the house booklet there are three areas, three thermostats. We try to keep the heat at 67 degrees year round (to adjust the heat takes a good 12 hours to feel a change) because the thick adobe walls work to retain heat in the winter and keep things cool in the summer — brilliant ancient architecture. The hot tub is serviced monthly by a local, great company and to my mind it makes no sense to turn the heat up and down for reasons of convenience and cost.
Come back in the summer when the backyard is lush and fruit is falling off the trees.
This place is a hidden gem, literally. It wasn’t easy to locate but once we did we were super excited. The historic adobe home has been artistically and modernized impeccably. We had everything we could possibly need right at our fingertips. The owner was very responsive to our needs and thoughtful with consideration to the products and toiletries provided. We all felt pampered including the our dogs. The coyote fenced yard is a generous size and perfect for our dogs. We were all convinced the dogs enjoyed the adobe every bit as much as us. I should caution you, this house is only for responsible pet owners. The owner has clearly put a great deal of love and art into this home. It was be so disappointing if she removed her pet policy due to irresponsible pet owners. Truly a gem and we could not have been happier. We look forward to returning.
Guests who understand and appreciate my home fill me up. Thank you so much. I look forward to having you return again and again.
Gorgeous Adobe Home Tucked Away
Lovely home with every detail attended to. Definitely not your average vacation house. This a home with wonderful art, great bedding and lots of extras like a well stocked kitchen, comfy robes and hot tub towels, wood for the fireplaces and much much more. Felt as though we were far away because it is so private and yet we were 5 mins from the plaza and pretty much everything else. Definitely will return.
We had a rough start to our vacation and arrived very late to the home. In fact, we had a difficult time finding it and called the homeowner and she answered her phone (even though it was 11pm) that is attentiveness... we can't thank her enough! She directed us to the home and when we arrived it was lite so nicely and peacefully- we immediately felt a sense of relief and wonder. The home is beautiful; it is warm and cozy inside and the attention to detail is beyond expectation. There is a great collection of art and the little details make it fun to explore the home. There is a book that shows the progression of the renovation and the history of the home, I encourage you to read it when you stay. Everything was perfect, the bathrooms are beautiful and I enjoyed a soak in the deep tub. The Kiva fireplaces add a warmth to the home and the kitchen had everything we needed- there is a great stock of little details that come in handy. The Homeowner has thought of everything including robes for wearing to the hot tub. I highly recommend this home without hesitation; Melissa (the homeowner) is a great host. You don't want to miss a chance to stay at "The Most Perfect Place." Thanks for a memorable vacation.
We had a perfect Christmas in this absolutely stunning restored adobe a few minutes from the Plaza
Unquestionably our best VERBO experience ever. Melissa's historic family adobe, which she totally restored, is just amazing. High ceilings, heated floors, a huge master bedroom and bath with the coolest drive-in tile shower ever! The main living, dining, kitchen area is all open. Kitchen is wonderful and really well stocked, with lots of pots and pans, appliances and basic supplies. The second bedroom is also nice, with its own private bath. And the big built-in seating in the living area is a great sleeping area as well (our 6'4" son was totally comfortable there). The kiva fireplace was so nice. The other great thing is the huge wrap-around covered porch-- real hacienda style with seating and a big dining table. The yard has two lovely, enormous weeping willows, and the hot tub on the back deck was so good. Better book next Christmas because otherwise we might grab it! We'll definitely be going back.
Thank you so much. I am thrilled you had such a great time and loved the house. You are most welcome anytime.
Happy New Year to You and Yours.
Magical Taos Home!
Our family of 4 from Austin spent the Thanksgiving holiday in this gem. Each room has been thoughtfully designed and every detail has been considered for comfort and warmth. The moment you walk in, you feel welcomed!
The gorgeous wood ceilings, artistically designed bathrooms, and fabulous kitchen draw you in and make you want to stay all day! In fact, our family spent a couple of days just hanging out and enjoying the home rather than going into town. The weeping willow in front is pure magic. Our kids loved piling up the leaves in the yard and jumping into them, climbing the tree, and swinging on the swing. The living room is actually larger than it appears in the photos and very comfortable.
The functional kivas, artwork throughout the home, and wonderful lighting really add to the experience. Melissa Howden has considered every detail to make this a perfect stay. Casa Betita exemplifies what HomeAway is all about!
Thank you so much. You have no idea how your experience and your comments fill me up. When I have guests who notice and appreciate the details it just thrills me.
So thank you and thank you for leaving the house in such fine shape. I hope you will be able to return in the not too distant future.
Casa Betita is one mile North of the Martinez Hacienda and about 2.5 miles south of the Millicent Rogers Museum. The house is about 1.5 miles west of the Plaza.
