Overview

About the property

Estate, 5 Bedrooms +, 5.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8-12),

Featured on the Discovery Channel program, "Ultimate Homes - Great Escapes," the Hacienda is Indisputably one of the most unique and beautiful properties on the Monterey Peninsula, This home was built over a fifteen-year period of time by an intrepid world traveler and antiquities dealer.

Situated on a hilltop of 20 acres overlooking Carmel and Pebble Beach, the 8500 sq. ft. palatial home is surrounded by terraced gardens and patios, studded with antiquities from exotic places. Here is a bit of paradise on Jack’s Peak that is one mile from Highway One and the gate to Pebble Beach, or a mere five-minute drive to Carmel and Monterey.

The gated entrance leads up a hill to a home worthy of a maharaja. A lifetime of collecting is evident in the construction of this home, which incorporates magnificent carvings and statuary. It is a magical place.

And it is equally luxurious. The beautifully appointed gourmet kitchen can accommodate anything from a small family to a professional chef and large group for catering. It also has a computer (24”screen) that operates the Sonos sound system, carrying your favorite music on great speakers to any desired common areas of the house and patio. You can also use the computer, of course, to access your email and the internet. Wifi is available throughout the Hacienda. A grand piano graces the common area of the villa.

Fires in the outdoor pits on the terraces are a favorite of our guests, as well as in the two indoor fireplaces. The glow of the fires is a trademark of this home. Fog is no deterrent to a good time at the Hacienda.

This is a family home of people who enjoy entertaining and it was designed to accommodate company while affording privacy if desired. It was completed and occupied in 2006 and the fixtures are modern and of the highest quality, though embedded in items of antiquity. The beds are wonderfully furnished with pillows and feathered duvets. The luxurious bathrooms come with the finest lavender shampoos, bath appointments, fluffy white towels and robes.

The atmosphere that we cultivate is that of a culturally very interesting environment, but also very relaxed. People have great fun and great gatherings here, and that is what we promote.

There are two other small homes on the estate in secluded places that are occupied by caretakers. Therefore assistance, if needed, is typically readily available.

Sleeping Quarters:

The master suite east wing occupies two floors, with its own intimate living area and fireplace on the main floor, and a winding staircase to the upstairs bedroom/bath area. The bedroom has a king size bed, and a bathroom with a luxurious tub for two, a shower, toilet and bidet. There two balconies with seating, where guests can enjoy the sunrise on the east overlooking the pines, or the sunset on the west and Point Lobos.

The guest wing on the west side of the Hacienda has two bedrooms with queen beds and ensuite bathrooms. Both access balconies with views of Point Lobos and Carmel.

The main floor has an additional large bedroom with a Chinese canopy king size bed. A half bath is nearby. This room can easily accommodate additional temporary beds. The family has used this room to house children and their parties.

The comfortable and roomy media room/ den, with a wide screen television, has a leather sofa bed that opens with a queen mattress. Here is the place to accommodate any late night television/movie buffs. A half bath is just a few steps away.

Near the spa downstairs, with a separate entrance, is the Spa Retreat Studio, a very private suite with two rooms featuring a king size bed, a lounging area and library, plus a full bath. It also has a trundle bed that can sleep two people.

Other amenities:

Outdoor Spa. The hot tub is stainless steel. It is available at all times. The wood-fired sauna will heat in about 20-30 minutes with just a few sticks of firewood. Once experienced, we think you will agree that wood-fired heat is bliss! Staff will help if needed. Adjoining is a wonderful outdoor shower. Guests occupying a room without ensuite bath may choose to have an early morning “tub” and shower in the spa area. There is also an adjacent toilet and sink. Guests may schedule an herbal bath, which the we will prepare, or give you detailed instructions on preparing - your choice. There are three tubs, again heated with wood fires. Choose your herbs – lavender, rosemary, mint, roses, etc. They all are found in the terraced gardens of the property.

The large Outdoor Kitchen is has a pagoda roof covering a full barbecue, a wood-fired Mugnaini Pizza Oven, and a sink with hot and cold running water. Also on the patio is a large “Horno” (adobe) oven. Choose your method for roasting your turkey, prime rib or leg of lamb – there are several!

On the lower south terraces are ponds with a fountain, but the best part of the ponds is the sound of the frogs - an amazing summertime soothing symphony that may remind you of experiences in the deep south.

Please note that we do not rent the home for weddings or commercial parties, but we are known to look favorably on non-profit events that support our interests in cultural preservation, environmental stewardship and gatherings of unique people.

We hope you will share our appreciation for this special place that Steinbeck called 'Tortilla Flats' and later wrote about in “Pastures of Heaven.”

About Cheryl Ray

As the senior Peterson who built this home looked to retirement and a reduced work load, his son Peterson Conway VIII and wife Wendy purchased the home.

Since 2003 the younger Conway has worked on the founding teams of companies related to Peter Thiel (Facebook, PayPal). He transitioned his early background in finance to representing international, rock star finance executives and later helped start--an online financial services company that went public in 2013.

Conway loves ambitious people but lives a much simpler life now, enjoying his two daughters with his wife Wendy on their small farm in Carmel Valley. He still flies up to Palo Alto regularly in his small plane to help a very talented company of Thiel's master the organization and analysis of the World's information. But usually you'll find him taking calls while working in his vegetable garden or cleaning the chicken coop.

He holds a BA from Dartmouth.

Wendy is a 'retired' computer engineer and full time wife and mother.

Cheryl Ray purchased this estate in 2011

Why Cheryl Ray chose Carmel By the Sea

This is our family home, located in one of the most beautiful and most sacred places on earth. There are miles of biking, hiking, and horseback trails. We are five minutes from Carmel Valley and thirty minutes from Big Sur and have immediate access to the Los Padres National Forest. We are 10 minutes from Carmel Beach. One mile off of California's highway one sits the entrance to the family estate.  The massive gates do little to betray what's inside, but the long driveway up the hill buffers the home from the horse country and golf courses that immediately surround it.  Amazingly, even the locals miss the 2,000 acre regional preserve that sits at the end of the road and is consequently and basically a private wilderness to walk, ride and hunt native relics in.

Exceptional shopping and restaurants are within minutes of Hacienda Aguajito.

What makes this estate unique

Exceptional wildlife, resident hawks, owls, frogs, foxes, bobcats, deer and mountain lions. Fabulous birding with over twenty feeders for hummingbirds to morning doves. This sacred property is an original Indian ceremonial ground. There are beautiful serene areas of sacred space for repose and reflection. The gardens are a magnificent boasting of the largest first growth native Monterey pines. The unique gardens contain aromatic herbs as well as a rose garden with over a hundred and thirty heirloom varieties. Decks with ocean views, outdoor kitchen with the most unique pizza oven you will ever see. Every door and window is framed in antique hand carved priceless treasures. The ceilings throughout the house are from a 16th century Indian palace. The stonework in the kitchens and bathrooms are beyond unique. Throughout the home you find travertine floors with radiant heat. Large wood burning fireplaces provide warmth and charm and four outdoor fireplaces offer space to gather and share as a group or to enjoy in peaceful solitude. There is an exceptional spa area with a large jacuzzi, a wood fired sauna, and a wood fired herbal bath - all totally unique. Enjoy a steam and sauna, a cold plunge, an outdoor shower, and choose between the five private decks.

Family Thanksgiving week at Hacienda

  • 5 of 5

Our family, 6 adults and 4 children ages 4, 4, 3 and 2 had a wonderful week long stay and Thanksgiving at Hacienda Nov 20 -27, 2016. The listing details came through as expected. The property is beautifully designed with terrific visual furnishings and effects. It was well maintained and clean. The owner's greeted us, showed us around and responded to even request without delay. Our family hopes to stay there again. We enjoyed the beach at Carmel, the Aquarium and hiking at Point Lobos. One cool starry night we enjoyed sitting round the fire-pit on the patio with propane powered heaters that kept us warm for several hours. We highly recommend Hacienda for a beautiful rustic setting only 10 minute drive to both Carmel and Monterey.

The property was unbelievable!

  • 5 of 5

The house and experience were incredible! The location was perfect and had very easy access to Monterey and Carmel. We were planning on going to Monterey and Carmel throughout the weekend, but when our entire group got there, we loved it so much that we did not leave the property. It is great for a big group and the pizza oven was a hit! We are definitely planning on coming back in the future!

WOW! Sensory Overload

  • 4 of 5

We were and are 8 men on a golf trip (along with eating and drinking). We absolutely had a blast staying at the Hacienda. The whole place (including the grounds) would take a year just to take notice of all of the "stuff" that is a part of the property. Cheryl and Peterson were very accommodating and were very attentive to our needs, including bringing us fabulous homemade bread one day. The kitchen and dining area are great and can easily accommodate 15 people or more. The sound system with Pandora was like being at a concert and the grand piano was better than a Steinway. The house is totally unique as to how it was built and it is not cookie cutter anything, including being a little tired in spots. My brother who has always aspired to be a pyromaniac was in heaven; at first we thought the house was a little cold but once he started the fires in the living room fireplace, the outdoor fire pit, the cowboy grill, the kiln(at least we think that is what it was), the GREAT wood fired sauna , the herbal bath and eventually even the wood stove in the teepee the place came alive. I almost forgot that we all enjoyed the hot tub also. The staff was great and every evening the fire wood was replaced and ready to go. The house is gated and sits on a beautiful piece of property so you don't have to worry about locking up or leaving your personal items in the house while you are gone. One night Jack slept in the teepee with the wood stove and memory foam mattress and said it was his best nights sleep. We will probably come back next year and do it again, I believe it is the type of property that will improve the more you understand it. The things I think that we're a little bit of a challenge that made my rating a 4 instead of a 5 are: for 8 men that do not like sharing rooms we did have two shared rooms and one did not have a restroom attached to it, the sleeper couch could be more comfortable. For several couples this would not be an issue. Overall the golf, food and wine were terrific but the Hacienda made our trip memorable!

Owner's Response: We really enjoyed hosting these guests. They were very easy and undemanding. They had great golfing reunion and enjoyable time, as stated. And they made a point of saying they would like to return. Seemed like a very high caliber group, and of the sort that one prefers in the luxury rental business. I suppose we could expect to receive their four star rating at some point, rather than our uninterrupted 5 star status over the two year period that the Hacienda has been available for rental. In this case it seems that we did not have the preferred number of bedrooms for the eight single men who were in the group, and therefore it reduced our value in their opinion. (Only five bedrooms rather than eight.) I suppose, with enough notice, we could add another wing? Thanks again, guys! See you next year.

PERFECT

  • 5 of 5

This birthday celebration will always be a special memory for me and my family that will last forever! We had an AMAZING time at Hacienda Aquajito . . . everything was PERFECT. There were 12 of us all together (3 generations). We now stretch from Philadelphia to San Francisco and to have our daughters, grandchildren and their families together was wonderful. This home is beautiful and we enjoyed choosing our bedrooms and settling in for a wonderful vacation. My granddaughter picked out her room months ago when she saw the carousel horse in one of the bedrooms! We enjoyed a fire in the living room fireplace the first night along with a wonderful meal from a caterer recommended by Cheryl. Each day just got better! Every morning started w/ me preparing breakfast for my grandchildren and then walking down to see the horses being fed. This was a very special for me to be able to have this time with them before our day began. There was so much to do. We went to Big Sur, Point Lobos, Carmel Beach, Monterey Aquarium and many wonderful restaurants but always looked forward to going home to The Hacienda. It was here that my grandchildren got to feed and sit on the Arabian horses, spend time at the pond and explore the beautiful gardens. The hot tub was another favorite for them. We all enjoyed sitting around the fire pit outside in the evening and the beautiful views from every balcony and patio. Talk about Secret Gardens . . . Our last night ended as PERFECT as our first! We all enjoyed a wonderful meal of pizza made in the wood-fired pizza oven on the patio. It was so much FUN to make and just be together. Thank you so much Cheryl. You were so much help before and after we arrived! My family also enjoyed meeting and talking to Peterson and enjoyed the homemade bread! The macaw was a bonus! We will always have fond memories of our time spent in your beautiful home and look forward to coming back someday!
