About Mari Renwick
We are family of artists who divide our time between the Catskills and Brooklyn NY. I am a painter and have been working primarily with encaustic paint of late. I love having extended periods of time to create out in our barn/studio. Living in an old farmhouse means continuous efforts to thwart entropy but when we aren't maintaining the house and property we are exploring the area, or working in the garden. My husband, Kevin, loves to work with wood and built a playhouse for our daughter who is now a bit too old to "play" but still likes to be "upstate" and loves the area for its proximity to quirky shops in both Woodstock and Saugerties.
Mari Renwick purchased this House in 1992
Why Mari Renwick chose Saugerties
My husband and I used to make frequent trips to the Catskills area for plein air painting and decided we wanted to find a place for ourselves. We initially only wanted a little bungalow that would allow us a place to stay after a day of painting. We soon realized we wanted it to be big enough for the family to visit and, of course, we needed a fireplace to warm us as we watched the falling snow in winter months. We looked for over a year and visited over 100 houses. When we found this 1850s house, and its' outbuildings filled with vestiges of farm-life, we were immediately committed to making it ours. The two little streams and open meadow, as well as wooded areas surrounding the house, were features that combined to make it the perfect location for us. We are on a quiet country road and often never leave the property but are less than 10 minutes from Woodstock when we want to connect with the "outside world". (about 10 minutes to downtown Saugerties)
What makes this House unique
One of my favorite things about this house is the porch. Grape vines frame the view and birds dart to the feeder while I sit and look out over the gardens, the stream, and the meadow, with my morning coffee or evening Cabernet. The sunny country kitchen still has its old charm and the old wood-to-gas stove a reminder of a different time. As is the outhouse (both unused!--not to worry!)

Wonderful escape from NYC.
Booked it months ago. Very satisfied.
Quiet Farmhouse in Hudson Valley
We really enjoyed our time in New York at this quiet farmhouse in Hudson Valley. We spent most of our time away visiting Hyde Park where our daughter attends The Culinary Institute of America. We enjoyed coming home in the evenings, making supper and relaxing on porch. We had limited opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful property, garden, and amenities that it offered because of our schedule. The only reason I am giving it a four is because I have allergies and the house initially was musty probably because of being closed up for the winter. Thank you for letting us enjoy your home and property.
Cozy and comfortable!
Thank you for having my friends and I. We enjoyed our stay very much. The house is exactly what we had hoped. We all sat around the fire, cooked, and watched TV. The house was also just close enough to Woodstock where we got an amazing dinner at Cucina! While I don’t ski, the house was close enough for my friends to get two full days on the slopes at Hunter Mountain. All in all, wonderful time! Thank Mari for being super accommodating and communicative.
So nice of you to do this, Jessica. I am always curious as to how guests are fairing during their stay. Its pleasing to me to hear how time was spent and that everyone enjoyed their stay. So happy to see your review and get a sense of your visit with friends. I hope you and your gang will return and perhaps try another time of year. Thank you again, Jessica!
A truly warm, inviting, and beautiful property
It was very clear by my and my traveling companion's interaction with the owner of this property in advance that she is an accommodating, warm, and pragmatic human being whose values for beings and the environment I completely appreciate. Our experience of the property bore that out. The ground seemed perfectly laid out for enjoyment of birds, flowers, fragrances, bunnies, frogs, deer, and even a groundhog, yet without the feeling of fuss or manicuring. I'm not sure how this has been accomplished, but it has! From the adjacent woods to the tree swing, to the old horseshoes, and the meandering creek, nothing has made me want to leave electronics behind quite like this.
The house was just as warm--an old farmhouse with a more modern kitchen and all the quirks to go with, well stocked with sheets and pillows, pots and pans, condiments and spices, coffee maker and microwave. The second floor could be a little warm in a heat wave with a shared air-conditioner, but all in all a positive stay in the home of good people worth visiting.
Cozy Catskills get away
My sisters and I had a wonderful stay in your lovely, tranquil home. The beds were so comfortable after late evenings chatting away in front of the nice fireplace. Mari was a gracious host and available with any concerns or questions.
I loved thinking about you gals, coming from far and wide to connect with each other and see the local sites. Thank you for choosing our house as your rendezvous destination.
Cozy (and warm!) Farmhouse perfect for a winter escape
We spent New Years with friends (and our 2 small kids) at this lovely house and it was just what we were looking for. Cozy and comfortable, we had everything we needed to cook big group dinners, sit around and play games by the fireplace, play guitars (there was even one at the house) and have a singalong.
Some things houses don't always do well but this one does---the heat was very responsive and we were always cozy and warm; the sounds of the adults having fun downstairs were largely muffled for the kids sleeping upstairs (we brought a noise machine so that definitely helped but the sound proofing was good); the fireplace works really well and it was never smoky when a fire was lit.
The grounds, covered in snow, were also beautiful and there are some interesting things to explore including a very old car (1920s era? we were imagining it was a rum running Prohibition-era car).
The owner, Mari, is super responsive and very nice. We'll be back! Thank you!
THANK YOU, Salwa! So nice to hear your kind comments, with thoughts about things I never even consider, ie: soundproofing and a smokey fireplace. :--) I love your imagined use of the old car. The actual use is slightly less exciting but interesting none-the-less. We understand that it was used as a taxi in NYC before the couple settled upstate to raise chickens. You are right about the year; its a 1927 Dodge. Thank you for visiting the Catskills! You were a fabulous guest; I hope you will return soon! ---m
Our 1850's farmhouse sits on a quiet country road where 2 small streams connect. The porch overlooks the yard with lilacs, forsythia and peonies. A short walk across the stream brings you to the vegetable garden with tomatoes and herbs ready to be picked. Out by the barn a tree swing and hammock with a mountain view beckon. Though the house is in a remote location we are just minutes to the center of famed Woodstock--known for its 'hippie' vibe, music and art scene--join the weekly drum circle. In the other direction is downtown Saugerties where you will find an historic river town-its many antique shops a testament to it's rich history. The beauty of this area is well documented by the Hudson River School painters--Kaaterskill Falls and Thomas Cole's house Olana are nearby. Fishing and tubing in the Esopus, hiking and skiing, boating and swimming at sandy riveredge beaches or local swimming holes as well as golf, and tennis are all close by. Garlic festival-horse shows--here!
