About Tom Bush

Owners live in adjacent cottage year round after using the combined properties as summer lake homes while raising our children. We have actively enjoyed both summer and winter activites for many years. As 'water people' we have enjoyed the property for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and swimming.

Tom Bush purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Tom Bush chose Mountains & Lakes

Fell in love with the Lakes Region in 1983 while vacationing in the area. Have summered or lived here since that first visit.

What makes this cottage unique

Quiet and relaxing atmosphere with privacy where we can enjoy the water and be able to be in the sun or in the shade while at the waters edge.

A lovely little cottage for a get away

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived we were greeted by music and flowers on the table! This was just the beginning. This sweet little cottage is meticulously maintained and has everything you could possibly want or need. We loved fishing from the dock, watching the sunset over the white mountains, making a fire (all the wood you need provided), making lobsters (all the supplies are here!), and playing games at night! We cannot wait to return next year!

Beautiful and peaceful lakeside cottage

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had an amazing time here for a quick lakeside getaway. It is the perfect place for a small family or even 5 adults (which was us!) The views from the cottage were fantastic and the place had everything we needed. We started a campfire in the fire pit every night and utilized the canoe and kayaks multiple times a day. This cute cottage has all the little details that makes it feel like home. We will definitely be back next year!

Amazing lakeside cottage with "the little things"!

  • 5 of 5

This place is amazing! This was our 2nd year staying here. It is the perfect place for a small family or for anyone who wants a relaxing vacation. The views from the cottage are amazing. The swimming and fishing right out in front of the cottage are both great, especially for little kids. The big difference between this place and other places on Highland lake is "the little things" the owners do to make this place special. From literally everything you need to cook a meal, to s'mores sticks, providing firewood with a fire pit with an a view, an amazing hammock, candles, multiple boats, etc. This place has it all!

Perfect lakeside cabin

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful location with everything you could want to make it a great vacation. Immaculately clean, with well equipped kitchen for cooking. Lovely screened porch where I enjoyed coffee and meals, with a view of Highland Lake. Used the kayak every day I was there...so convenient to have this provided. Sunsets over the White Mts. from Adirondack chairs on the dock were just delightful. Easy walk into town to enjoy all that Bridgton has to offer. Highly recommend for a restful, yet active vacation.

One of the best vacations we've ever taken

  • 5 of 5

We intended to sit down and write this review for a couple of weeks now but life has gotten in the way. We are ready to jump in our car and head right back up to this great cottage on Highland Lake.. only we can’t because we have commitments at home and we are sure that someone else is already staying there.

This is the first time we have stayed in a cottage not belonging to relatives and we were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. We could have literally brought just a couple of changes of clothes, our toiletries and whatever food we wanted and that was it. Tom and Rita have everything you could want or need already in this cottage. The kitchen has every imaginable appliance from big to small. But the nice part is that the cabinets and counter tops were not cluttered. They have plenty of shelves in different rooms to make unpacking and cleaning up easier.

The furniture was all very comfortable and clean. There was enough storage space to keep stuff out of sight which was nice because my family tends to clutter rooms up claiming they have nowhere to store things. Not a problem there.

We decided to make use of the optional linen service and what a great idea. The beds were already made and plenty of shower towels and beach towels were available.

My favorite indoor spot was on the screened porch overlooking the lake. My favorite outdoor spot was early mornings on the dock watching the rowers and listening to the loons or - wait…..maybe it was the hammock hung in the perfect spot for an afternoon snooze or maybe it was the front bedroom where you could fall asleep overlooking the lake.

We had several campfires (there was plenty of split wood and kindling) and sat in comfy Adirondack chairs that overlooked the water. It was great to have use of all the water craft, the beach and two more chairs on the dock.

We loved the way Rita and Tom checked in on us when we first arrived to be sure we had everything we needed. The town of Bridgeton with its quaint antique shops and boutiques was just a short walk from the cottage which was nice for us because we live at least 8 miles from the nearest store at home.

We could go on and on about all of the great features of this cottage and its’ owners but we’re sure it has all been said over and over again by others.

Thanks Rita and Tom for a wonderful vacation!

The Way Life Should Be!

  • 5 of 5

We have been renting this cottage since 2013. Some things get old and worn with time. Not this cabin! I stopped reviewing after our second year, not because it wasn't amazing, but because I ran out of superlatives!

The cottage was perfect for our vacation. It was immaculately clean, the beds were very comfortable and the location was perfect. The kitchen was well stocked with equipment, there is a charcoal grill, a picnic table with umbrella and a fire pit with LOTS of wood. There is even a washer and dryer! This year there was a lakeside hammock that was AMAZING! We made good use of the screened porch on warm summer evenings listening to the loons.

We felt like we were a million miles from anywhere, but it was only a 10 minute drive to the supermarket. If you like to walk, downtown is about a mile away, so there is no need to take a car.

The waterfront is a sandy bottom with a mini-beach that allows easy access. It is perfect for young children or people like me that don't like to jump into the water. The dock was large and has a swim ladder, chairs and a bench. Rich caught a few small bass and a large pickerel from the dock. There was a rowboat, canoe, sailboat and kayak for our use. Everything was very well maintained. Every year the owners have made improvements to the property. It's obvious that Tom and Rita really think about what will make their guests comfortable.

When we are on vacation we like to relax and not sight see, so I can't offer any insight into activities in the area. However, the owners provided a binder of brochures and restaurant info. We were happy to sit and watch the loons.

The owners are delightful, the perfect balance of attentive without being intrusive. They truly treated us as guests, not as "renters".

Thanks so much, Tom & Rita. We will see you next year!!!
