About Fran Larkins

Welcome to The Lark Inn! We're Fran and Dick Larkins from Fredericksburg, VA. Fran is a Carolina 'Tar Heel' and retired from the Library of Congress. Dick is a retired USAF Colonel (69 Academy grad). When we're not enjoying time on the Outer Banks, we love to travel and are involved in golf, pickleball and other fun activities in our Celebrate by Del Webb 55+ community.

Fran Larkins purchased this house in 1992

Why Fran Larkins chose Corolla

We built our cottage in 1992 shortly after returning from 3 years in the Netherlands and England with the U.S. Air Force. (Dick had purchased the property several years before when Ocean Sands was a new development and the wild horses were roaming free.) We have many wonderful memories of vacationing at the Lark Inn with our 2 teenage daughters and their friends. The tradition continues with our 2 adorable grandchildren who love the sandy beach and visiting the 'turtle pond.'

What makes this house unique

The northern Outer Banks is very family oriented! No large hotels, casinos, or boardwalks. Instead, single family cottages with plenty of space on our wide beach; kayaking or crabbing on the sound; quiet roads for bicycling; a historic light house to climb; and puzzles and board games for a family game night. Try delicious seafood at a local restaurant (Collington Cafe is our all time favorite)or bring in NC BBQ from Pigman's.

NEW FOR 2016 - beautiful, wide path along Rte 12 from Timbuck II to south of Harris Teeter shopping center. Enjoy safe biking and running!

You'll find our cottage is an easy walk to the beach - you can hear the surf from our decks - without beach front prices. With no pool, we can keep the price affordable for a small family, but you'll love our hot tub on the upper deck! At night, when there's a chill in the air and the house lights are off, there's nothing like watching the stars with a glass of champagne. An amenity usually found only in larger houses is our dual zone air conditioning system which makes it very easy to control the temperatures on both levels. Have you been wanting to try a TEMPURPEDIC mattress? Our king bedroom is your perfect opportunity. We have a great selection of paperbacks and we rate new movies as 'beach house worthy' - those we think our guests would enjoy and add them to our collection. With our grandkids, we really like having an extra set of eyes - a life guard stand right at the foot of the steps in season.

We come down often to check things out and take pride in having a cottage you'll want to come back to often. We vacation here too! Many Lark Inn guests return year after year for quality family time and have become 'old friends'.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for sharing the Lark Inn with us! We enjoyed the hot tub almost every day. Although the weather was on the cooler side, we had sunshine, not rain! We loved exploring the area by bike and taking daily walks on the beach.

An Oasis of Comfort & Accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from spending Labor Day week in your lovely home. It is an oasis of comfort and accommodation. It is decorated so beautifully. The kitchen is well stocked with everything one could possibly need and it was easy to see that a large group of 12 could easily have a meal together. The master bedroom bed and linens were so comfortable my husband, who typically is an early riser, spent many mornings lingering in bed because he was so comfortable. I love the atmosphere of your home - it was beautiful, inviting, cozy, and warm. I appreciated the special touches, i.e., the framed cross-stitched lighthouse, the happy reminders of what a beach vacation is all about in the wall hangings, the lighthouse stools in the kitchen, and the adorable bedroom with the painted furniture. Sitting in the swinging chair or laying on the hammock became a daily activity after a day on the beach.

This was our first time visiting the OBX and it was delightful. This home is located within short walking distance to a private, community beach. The owners have provided enough beach chairs for a large family, beach toys for children, and a beach wagon to assist in carrying whatever necessary to the beach. What a wonderful surprise to see that dogs are permitted on the beach. We are not dog owners but did enjoy watching them have fun in the ocean. Permitting dogs on the beach enhanced the family atmosphere of OBX.

There are local shops, a grocery store and restaurants only a mile or so away. Recommend calling restaurants for reservations. Restaurants we enjoyed; Agave Roja (modern Mexican) excellent food and service, Buddhalicious (Thai inspired) Zen atmosphere with delicious food, Lighthouse Bagels (NOT your dense grocery store bagel - how do they make them so light and fabulously delicious?), and The Paper Canoe in Duck (poetry on a plate - exquisite food beautifully presented).

Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. We plan to return to the Lark Inn for our next OBX visit.

Owner's Response: Patti - Our daughter stitched the lighthouse picture as a gift when we first built The Lark Inn and it has always been very special to us. I'll be sure to tell her that you commented on it. Thanks for taking the time to let us (and others) know all the fun things you did! Sounds like you managed to get in some relaxing time as well and our house was just perfect for the 2 of you. Hope you'll return to the OBX again soon! Fran and Dick

Great for families with toddlers

  • 5 of 5

It's a great house with everything you could need. The outside shower was a must with 2 toddlers that had sand all over. We brought our own sand toys but the boys enjoyed the toys at the house too. The beach is only a short walk away through the path. The neighborhood was quiet and the traffic on the streets was light. All drivers were very aware of looking out for children and the ice cream truck. We nightly played basketball and rode bikes in the neighborhood. The boys LOVED the turtle pond just a short walk away and seeing the crabs on the beach at night with their flashlights. We appreciated your welcome note with suggestions for things to do and restaurants. We stayed local in Corolla and found everything we needed. Thank you for sharing your house and making it easy to relax and refresh.

Owner's Response: Susan - Even though our grandchildren are no longer toddlers, a walk to the turtle pond in the evening is still a must for our family. Love watching all the turtles, the fish as they compete for the tidbits of bread, and the occasional egret who feasts on the fish. And if we're really lucky, we'll hear the music of the ice cream truck on the way back. So glad to hear you had a fun time at our house with your little ones and thanks for sharing your memories with us! Fran and Dick

Very nice vacation place

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for sharing the Lark Inn with us! The owners were very easy to work with, we rented outside of the normal weekly time window and being off season they worked with us on the dates we needed. We enjoyed the hot tub almost every day. Although the weather was on the cooler side, we had sunshine, not rain! We loved exploring the area by bike and taking daily walks on the beach. Thanks for a wonderful, much needed family time.

Owner's Response: Quality "family time" is why we also look forward to getting away to the OBX - any time of year. Really glad we were able to make The Lark Inn available for the dates you needed. Sometimes that's possible in early spring or late fall and we're always happy to try to work it out. Thanks so much for your review! Fran and Dick

Great for couples and families

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for the elegant yet peaceful stay during our anniversary getaway. We traveled with our dog for the first time and were delighted with the clean fresh accommodations you provided. We enjoyed days on the beach and walks to feed the turtles at the lake every evening. Our dog Jade enjoyed that very much. I would highly recommend this place to families, couples and of course dog lovers looking for a great getaway to the Outer Banks.

Owner's Response: So glad your anniversary at our beach house was extra special! Hope you got to enjoy the fireplace and hot tub and a few of our excellent local restaurants too! We receive many nice comments from guests who really appreciate being able to vacation with their family dog in a well cared for, nicely decorated cottage. Please don't wait a year to come back again - September and October are our favorite months on the OBX! Thanks so much for your review! Fran and Dick

2nd Time back and just as great as the first!!

  • 5 of 5

Another enjoyable week at Lark Inn! We were here six years ago with 2 of our daughters. This year we returned with our daughter, son-in-law and their two dogs. A couple of cool days at the start of week and then some lovely, sunny, warm days. Enjoyed the beach, of course. Took the ferry to Ocracoke one day, the guys did deep sea fishing another day out of Oregon Inlet. Caught a lot of shark. A very relaxing week in a very comfortable family-oriented cottage. Thanks again for a great vacation with the family.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review! We enjoy exploring other parts of the Outer Banks in the off-season too. On a sunny day, the Ocracoke Ferry is a lovely ride in the fresh sea air and the village is charming. You can also visit both the Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke lighthouses down that way. Dick has taken deep sea and party boats from Oregon Inlet and really enjoyed the day. Hope you'll be back again soon with your new little granddaughter! Fran and Dick

Great Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Great weather and the beach was wonderful, and a short walk away! Nearby Corolla Lighthouse was a great place to see the sunset. Lunch at Blue Point and some shopping at the Boardwalk Shops made for a great little trip.

The Lark Inn is very spacious and comfortable and there are so many different places to hang out that you can get away from the crowd if wanted! Very clean and well equipped! Loved it.

Owner's Response: Did you discover our favorite quiet spot for a good beach read - the hammock on our shady mid-level deck? When you were at the lighthouse for the sunset, hope you had a chance to browse the Island Bookstore at Historic Corolla Village! We enjoy the Waterfront Shops close to Bluepoint too! Another good place for a sunset on the sound, ice cream, and I always have to pop into the Sea Dragon Gallery and Duck's Cottage. Sea Dragon has the OBX santa ornaments and I like cozy Duck's Cottage for their unique selection of books on the OBX and delicious coffee. So glad you loved our house - hope you'll hurry back! Happy Thanksgiving! Fran and Dick
