Black Hills Home Cabins—CHOKECHERRY HIDEOUT—in Hill City, Mickelson Trail, Grill
Black Hills Home Cabins at Chokecherry BnB is IN Hill City (friendly mountain town in the Central Black Hills), and features 2 cabin-style nightly vacation rentals, under the one roof of our recently built hospitality place. This listing offers CHOKECHERRY HIDEOUT, small — 13'-4" x 11'-4" main room; 6'-6" x 4'-8" bathroom with 4' step-in shower — but thought-out carefully for comfort and convenience, and the rates are relaxed! Owners Sam and Linda live in an apportioned part of the structure; separately from your 'hideout' which is around back at the end of the pathway to that unit (defining the unit as integrated under the roof of our modern mountain cottage, yet distinct to itself). The overall cottage consists of 3 individual units: owner quarters; Chokecherry Hideout (in-home cabin); and Eloosive Moose (in-home cabin Vrbo ID 3558169). Yes, you have a personal entrance and outside area with your cute cozy cabin, often described as homey and warm feeling by guests. Please view photos, read captions, and inquire if you have questions.
NOTE 1—Our Vrbo calendar is set for showing availability from present to six months out, and adjusts automatically to always show six months availability.
NOTE 2—Please read the House Rules/Policies at bottom of this listing, and look at the amenities available or not available. It is IMPORTANT to do so before sending a Request To Book. For instance, we are firm on renting to NON-SMOKERS only [people who do NOT smoke anything]. Under no circumstances can we accommodate people who smoke, even if they smoke off-property. (If this policy is relevant to you, read About Our Non-Smokers Only Policy at bottom.) Again, read the rules and policies, and check the amenities shown in this listing.
CHECKIN window between 4:00-6:00 p.m.—The checkin window is to let you know we are not ready to receive guests before 4:00, so that isn’t an option; however, after 6:00 we usually have more flexibility. (The morning of your arrival date we will email to narrow down your eta.) CHECKOUT by 11:00 a.m.—Necessary particularly when we have guests arriving later the same day as your checkout.
A suggestion—if you are 3 or 4 adults traveling together, you may check to see if Eloosive Moose is also available and, if so, you could rent both in-home cabins! We have accommodated guests who did just that. The benefits include 2 full bathrooms, privacy between the in-home cabins, 2 places to spend time together, the picnic table, 2 grills (one electric and one charcoal), and probably you could think of other benefits as well. Please inquire if you have questions.
2006-2021 (Vrbo since 2013) — With 15 years experience as host and hostess of our first owner-occupied BnB, we have acquired a strong sense of what works for and appeals to travelers. Our stack of guest books, filled with happy satisfied expressions from former thousands of guests, attests to our earnest desire to extend hospitality that shows you are on our minds. As we look forward cheerfully to meeting all our future vacationers who will be visiting the beautiful Black Hills and choose to book here, we are reminded of our gratitude for those past wonderful years which we were blessed to enjoy, and for all the new friends we made because they chose to stay with us, some of whom followed us forward!
Let’s explore a variety of benefits you may expect from Black Hills Home Cabins. ~ First of all, and significantly, we are near Mt. Rushmore, in the Central Black Hills, ideal for adventurous day-trips into unparalleled diverse scenic vistas everywhere in the length and breadth of the Black Hills. ~ No less advantageous, the in-town location of Black Hills Home Cabins provides easy access, even on foot, to everything Hill City has to offer. ~ Black Hills Home Cabins is in near proximity to the George S. Mickelson Trail, for exercise, or bird and wildlife viewing out in nature. The ever-popular trail strides through town along Railroad Avenue. We are situated across the football field from Major Lake, where there is access to the Mickelson Trail from the lake (and a fishing/resting pier!) ~ Don't miss the iconic tourist attraction, Black Hills Central Railroad's 1880 Train, stationed along the trail. ~ Bike rentals are locally available as well. ~ For your grocery needs, Hill City's full service Krull's Market is only a few blocks away. ~ There are two laundromats in town. ~ And several churches grace this small community. ~ Probably you will devote some leisurely time to historic downtown Hill City, where you will find everything from a hair salon to filet mignon to dreamy ice cream and homemade fudge to a world class dinosaur museum, and Dahl’s Chainsaw Art. Track down fine gifts, as well as souvenirs, t-shirts and antiques. ~ Also available for purchase are antiques displayed in a special log cabinet in Chokecherry Hideout, direct from our former retail shop, Smiling Bear Antiques.
Please review all PHOTOS provided with this listing, and we recommend that you indulge in reading the informative captions. You will see your private full bath, with a 4’ shower having 6 handy shelves; and an assortment of amenities throughout—linens and towels are provided, as well as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, dish soap. The bed is a queen-size pillowtop. For holding baggage there are two small discreet tables and a long low dresser with drawers, and hangers to the right of the dresser. Plus a 2' round table and two comfortable rotating chairs.
You may create your own evening warmth by lighting up the firepit; and perhaps CharBroil something good, to eat sitting on a stump (rustic-style), or at your picnic table, or on the patio while gently swinging the glider, basking in the view. The pebble base surrounding the firepit, when first walked on by our granddaughter gave her occasion to remember with pleasure the beaches in Florida where she was raised. So, we have dubbed the nostalgic pebbles, Shelby’s Beach…styled with a bowl of seashells and a duo of cranes. You may even be entertained by osprey, deer, bunnies or wild turkeys, or locals walking their pets around the football field's track.
Indeed, you may take pleasure in the peaceful quiet surrounding our two in-home cabins, and amusement from the infrequent novelty of an event taking place on the football field, afternoon or early evening, on rare occasions, which we ourselves find entertaining.
The KITCHENETTE has dishes, utensils, coffee and tea, salt and pepper, an undercounter refrigerator, microwave, toaster, 4-cup coffee maker, and a pantry of sorts (inside the barrel) for your goodies. Speaking of goodies—NOTE—with the standard modest rate that we offer on Vrbo, a mini breakfast (in a basket) will be provided in the accommodations, consisting typically of simple breakfast takeaways, in case guests need a burst of energy prior to searching out one of the eateries in Hill City or the surrounding area. The mini breakfast might include fruit; breakfast bar or bagel or muffin or other pastry or oatmeal packets; milk (for oatmeal or coffee or simply to drink); cheese or boiled egg or yogurt (quantity and variety subject to length of stay).
Though the accommodation is serviced regularly, your host and hostess are generally available by text if anything is needed, since we have our own quarters in the residence.
Smart TV with Roku is provided, also cable programming for local channels. WiFi internet service through our cable provider is included.
We very much enjoy the role of host and hostess at our Black Hills Home Cabins. Without question, we are deeply grateful for the glorious years we have been enriched by, getting to know so many of the wonderful travelers who venture to the alluring Black Hills that are our home. Excitedly we are anticipating meeting many more, maybe you, as we offer two engaging in-home cabins—Chokecherry Hideout and Eloosive Moose—here in Hill City, under our roof. _________________________ It is our Policy that strong lingering scents and products are not used in the guest cabins, for the sake of guests who will be staying after you. Thank you for understanding and complying if you stay.
ONLY microwave cooking is allowed indoors. The grill is for you to enjoy outdoor cooking. Windows and door must be closed while cooking outside or using the firepit.
NO pets or animals of any kind can be accommodated.
ABOUT OUR NON-SMOKERS ONLY POLICY, referring back to NOTE 2 above, it does mean that we can accommodate NON-smokers only. Even if potential guests who smoke would not smoke on our property but would smoke off our property, the smoke residue would be carried back inside where it permeates curtains, bedding, etc, and is impossible to clean adequately prior to arrival of the next guests, who may be sensitive or allergic to smoke residue; also, our own health does not tolerate it. If you are smokers who may feel it would be acceptable to smoke off-property and simply not smoke in the accommodations, we must ask that you do not request a stay at Black Hills Home Cabins. Thank you for understanding, and be assured it need not be taken as a personal affront, but it is of utmost importance to us. There are many accommodations available that welcome smokers. _________________________ Moderate Cancellation, as found with this Vrbo listing: Travelers who cancel at least 30 days before check-in will get back 100% of the amount they've paid. Very pleasant hosts, thoughtful little touches upon arrival and excellent communication. The "hideaway" was calm and cozy and gave us an ideal spot for a base for a few days. The hosts seemed to have thought of everything including a well supplied kitchenette with coffee! Just what we were looking for.
Great location to headquarter from to see many of the sites of the Black Hills, the host shared some hidden jewels that was fun. Great folks who took care of our needs and wants. Cute cabin!
Sam and Linda as hosts were very friendly and helpful. Chokecherry is cozy and very cleverly decorated., kept very clean. We really appreciated the little welcome basket - nice touch! We’ll surely recommend Chokecherry Hideout!Carole and Danny
Linda and Sam are wonderful owners and make you feel very much at home. Very quiet neighborhood, beautiful scenery. Thank you so much for an incredible stay.
The room was pleasant and comfy. We enjoyed our stay. Hosts Sam and Linda were very nice. Sam gave us plenty of ideas of places to visit. Enjoyed the goody basket. There was no vineyard so that is why we rated it one star. It did not affect how we felt about our stay. We will visit again.
The cabin was really cute and homey. I loved the decorations and the bed was warm and comfy. It had all the little amenities I required. It was very clean and the welcome basket provided by Sam and Linda was super thoughtful. When I needed something, I only had to text, and Sam was right there with it. I even came back from a long day of hiking, and there was a homemade scone with butter waiting for me. It was delicious and so appreciated. If I were traveling alone or with my husband, I would come back here in a heartbeat. It is a wonderful place to stay.
Absolutely an amazing place to rest your head. So clean. Great communication and quick responses. Sam was there to greet us and gave many suggestions as to where to eat and views of wildlife. Welcome basket was full of snacks and fruit. Loved the fire pit to close out our nights! Highly recommend. Small but mighty!
This is thw most delightful place! Amazingly decorated with a nice yard and lawn chairs. There were deer in the yard every morning! The room is quiet. We will be returning for a visit to this charming place. The hosts were very friendly and gave great advice on where to eat and what to see!
This B&B is absolutely perfect and cozy for a couple or solo traveler. It is one private room and a private bathroom with your own entrance. The room is so thought out, well laid out and adorably decorated throughout. They have everything you need. They also deliver a basket of goodies that has yogurt, fruit, a variety of organic snacks and milk. The owners Sam and Linda are a pleasure to talk with. They have a beautiful place and plenty of parking. There is fire pit with wood provided, a grill and a picnic table to enjoy out back while watching the local football team practice on the field behind the house. You can walk to town to shop or have dinner at several restaurants, ride the train to Keystone and back and there is a grocery store located near by. There are rabbits and deer to watch on occasion.
A beautiful little well appointed room with bath. Thoughtfully supplied with some items for breakfast and/or snacks and fresh towels and removal of used towels and trash daily. Additionally a microwave and fridge as well as coffee maker (with coffee and sweetener supplied), dishes, dishtowels, etc. Basically, all anyone would need. It all made for a wonderful, restful stay for us. We enjoyed it tremendously and highly recommend Sam and Linda’s place.
Great place to get away! Very quaint and clean! Sam and Linda were wonderful hosts! Very knowledgeable about the area and gave great suggestions!

We love what we do! Over the years, many guests have taken time to write genuinely fond online reviews, as well as heart-warming notes in our guest books, on the cleanliness and comfort of their guest nests, on the deliciousness of their breakfasts, and on the friendliness of their hosts. Our original hospitality business of 15 years was both BnB and Black Hills Home Cabins, with multiple happy expressions by our guests referring to their space as their CABIN. We very much like the excitement about cabins, and so that is what our vacation rental business relocation transition settled into, just on a smaller scale than what we had grown into for those first 15 years with the help of two amusing summer-granddaughters. The girls are grown, no longer our 'little helpers', yet always an important part of our lives. 2024 marks year 2 of the freshly constructed Black Hills Home Cabins at Chokecherry BnB.
We love that our new place is built in the beating heart of this charming mountain town, especially since Hill City is so friendly and brimming with history. And we love the central location in the beautiful Black Hills National Forest. Hill City truly is the HEART of the Hills!
There are so many intriguing choices for recreational direction that we often pause before driving into our adventure and inquire of each other—Which way should we go? One of our favorite things to do is to take the scenic drive to Sylvan Lake and hike around the lake, soaking in the beauty from granite vantage points along the way. Another favorite is to take the scenic drive along Mount Rushmore Road and park at Horsethief Lake, where we can begin at the boardwalk for a hike around the lake. Serene, beautiful, enchanting! Often on Sunday afternoons, we will pick a way to go to Custer State Park or perhaps Wind Cave National Park, where we may begin our outing with a nap, then view buffalo and other wildlife, and go for a nature walk.

Hva gjør dette overnattingsstedet unikt?
Chokecherry Hideout is the smaller of our two Black Hills Home Cabins, as reflected by the measurements of the space (13'-4" x 11'-4" main room; and 6'-6" x 4'-8" bathroom). To be sure, the overall indoor square footage is small (179 sf), but appointed to create effectively a warm happy coziness. The high sloped ceiling adds visual appeal and space, guiding the eyes to a delightful stained glass fixture and on up to a beautiful ceiling fan. The furniture pieces were selected carefully and placed intentionally for usefulness to guests. The tall log cabinet we considered removing, but it is needed for extra linen storage, as well as the display of antiques which guests may purchase, if desired...a fun amenity. A high deep shelf over the bathroom contributes to visual expansion and is decorated to compliment the outdoorsy rustic theme of the Hideout. Guests do have the option to enjoy the patio with the glider, and the grassy area with the picnic table. The firepit and charcoal grill are also appreciated amenities. So, the space expands to the outdoors conveniently, and two large windows bring the outdoors indoors, so to speak. To balance the size of the interior, the room rate is downsized. We ask potential guests to please review the photos provided with the listing, and we welcome any questions you may have.
