The Log Cabin Will Capture Your Heart And Settle Your Mind.

This one room rustic log cabin was built in 1946 and is 640 sq ft. There is a full bed, 1 IKEA twin chair bed and a full sofa futon. Fully equipped kitchen, fireplace and the bath has a roomy claw footed tub.

This cabin is for those that truly want to 'get away from it all', no TV, no phone - sporadic cell service.

About Rita Chapman

Both of us have lived in South Dakota since we were 12 and our daughter has lived here all her life.  We raced bicycles (on and off road) for 10 years before settling in Silver City. Tally has participated in the Race Across America - finishing twice and Rita was an Expert Cross Country National Champion in Mountain Biking. Both of us have numerous state championships in our divisions for both road racing and mountain biking. This history of traveling, racing and hosting other poor cyclists at our home influenced us in our purchase of Tallys' fathers cabin business. It has suited us tremendously, we love to meet people and help them have a memorable vacation.

Rita Chapman purchased this cabin in 1998

Why Rita Chapman chose Black Hills

We would love to share our little slice of heaven in Silver City with anyone in need of a place to “get away from it all”.

What makes this cabin unique

There are unlimited activities available in the Black Hills from kayaking, inner tubing down the creek, rock climbing, cross country or downhill skiing, hunting, running, geocaching, fishing, it is up to your imagination. We love being outdoors.  Mountain biking, running and hiking are our favorite activities in Silver City.  Tally is the mountain biking trail expert and Rita has the running trails dialed in. If you are not too fast we may even join you. We have a garden, weeding is always available for those interested. Ask for information anytime.  By the end of July the raspberries are getting ripe and the season continues through 3rd week of August. It is not hard to find a wild patch.

Ideal cabin in setting "away from it all"

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I had a delightful stay in the Log Cabin. Trails right outside the door; Lake Pactola around the corner; easy access to sightseeing. The cabin itself offered anything we could have wanted for preparing meals or games or books or ideas of activities in the area. Exceeded our hopes for a quiet getaway. Absolutely perfect.

Comfortable, stress-free cabin

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the Happy Trails Log Cabin -- so aptly named! We are a couple of foodies and wanted to be able to cook for ourselves after a day of touring the sites in the Black Hills; the kitchen in the Cabin is very well equipped, with all of the tools you could want. We especially enjoyed using the gas grill. We enjoyed the ample size of the cabin, the comfortable furniture, and sitting out on the deck. Every morning we were there we saw several deer wandering around our yard or that of our neighbors; plenty of rabbits and birds, too! Since we had not been to the Black Hills before, our goal was to "see the sights" -- Mt. Rushmore, Wind Cave, Hill City Railroad, etc. The short road to Silver City, off the main Black Hills highway, is only about 5 miles long; but it is a twisty-turny drive and so takes about 15-20 minutes. Thus it takes at least an hour of driving to get to the aforementioned sights. And back again! I suspect this cabin would be best for someone who wants to get away, relax, and not hit the road every day to see the sights, as it is rather isolated and distant from the main sights! We were only at the cabin 3 nights (2 days), so we didn't really experience the daytime quietude of the community. But we certainly looked forward to returning to our relaxing cabin each evening. No TV. No cell phone reception. Just quiet, peace, and rejuvenating conversation! We met our hosts, Rita and Tally, the evening we arrived and enjoyed a lively conversation with them about a mutual interest, bees!

Perfectly Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Log Cabin for 4 nights - we spent the days motorcycling around the beautiful Black Hills, and returned to the peace and quiet of Silver City every evening. We enjoyed the nice view from the deck while we relaxed with a cold beverage after a long day's ride. The Log Cabin had everything we needed for our comfort, and the hosts are great people. I hope to return soon.

As one of the previous guest had written. Everything you need and everything you don't.

This cabin was everything I was hoping for. It was centered prefect between Deadwood/Spearfish and Mount Rushmore/ Crazy Horse. It was in a cool little community with I think 4 streets. (so quiet) I was with just myself and my two children 12 and 10 years old. They we all had our own bed and very comfortable. Rita and Tally couldn't have been nicer. Hope to get back that way and stay in one of their places again. Highly recommend!

A lovely hideaway in the Black Hills!

  • 5 of 5

Off the path, convenient to Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Spearfish and Rapid City. Don't miss the Deerfield Trail, across the bridge (to the left) down the road, a quick walk from the cabin.

Home Sweet home

  • 5 of 5

As we took the long winding road at 3am after our 9 hour drive we pulled up to find a cute note left by Rita welcoming us! When we went in we were immediately relaxed by the home like atmosphere. More importantly to us our high strung dogs were relaxed here as well. It was close enough to everything that we could enjoy it but just far enough that we could get away and have some family time too. Thank you for the wonderful stay!
