About Rita Chapman

Both of us have lived in South Dakota since we were 12 and our daughter has lived here all her life.  We raced bicycles (on and off road) for 10 years before settling in Silver City. Tally has participated in the Race Across America - finishing twice and Rita was an Expert Cross Country National Champion in Mountain Biking. Both of us have numerous state championships in our divisions for both road racing and mountain biking. This history of traveling, racing and hosting other poor cyclists at our home influenced us in our purchase of Tallys' fathers cabin business. It has suited us tremendously, we love to meet people and help them have a memorable vacation.

Rita Chapman purchased this cabin in 1998

Why Rita Chapman chose Black Hills

We would love to share our little slice of heaven in Silver City with anyone in need of a place to “get away from it all”.

What makes this cabin unique

There are unlimited activities available in the Black Hills from kayaking, inner tubing down the creek, rock climbing, cross country or downhill skiing, hunting, running, geocaching, fishing, it is up to your imagination. We love being outdoors.  Mountain biking, running and hiking are our favorite activities in Silver City.  Tally is the mountain biking trail expert and Rita has the running trails dialed in. If you are not too fast we may even join you. We have a garden, weeding is always available for those interested. Ask for information anytime.  By the end of July the raspberries are getting ripe and the season continues through 3rd week of August. It is not hard to find a wild patch.

The Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I wanted something different. We really wanted to unplug from daily life, and this cabin was the perfect place to do just that. It is just so cozy and inviting - the owners thought of everything! There is a fully equipped kitchen, where making meals was easy. Imagine sipping your morning cup of coffee, surrounded by the peace and quiet of the forest. What a treat! Not having modern distractions, such as television or Internet really allowed us to focus on each other. We are both outdoorsy people, and the Black Hills area has plenty to offer in the way of hiking, boating, swimming, etc. We brought along our dog, who also very much enjoyed the cabin and its surroundings.

Relaxing and unwinding by the fireplace at night, while playing board games was a great way to conclude our evenings. Rita and Tally, the owners, are wonderful people as well. We will certainly be back.

Loved the cabin and the surrounding area!

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed in the Log Cabin this past weekend and really liked the atmosphere and surrounding area of Silver City. It is a great place to base out of and there is so much to do in the area. We went to Spearfish, Mt. Rushmore, Keystone, Deadwood, and Custer State Park and they were all within a reasonable drive of the cabin. We loved the fire place and the fact that there was dry and cut wood ready for our use when we arrived. I also really appreciated the nice and new Weber to grill up our steaks for dinner. In summary I would say this place has very reasonable rates in an area that is sure to please with lots to do!

Amazing getaway spot for a great price!

  • 5 of 5

Take the scenic 5 mile drive off Highway 385 to stay at Happy Trails Cabins if you are ever in the Black Hills. The Tree Cabin was perfect for our family of six. Everything we needed for kitchen and bathroom was in the cabin. Playset in the yard kept the kids busy when parents were cooking or otherwise engaged. Quite centrally located - all the major Black Hills attractions within an hour drive. And plenty to do at Silver City - hiking trails right there, creek for fishing or swimming, bird watching, and more. Owners very welcoming and friendly. Will definitely stay there again!

Wow. That sums up the location and the experience. Located in the middle of nowhere atop a small mountain. Such a great little piece of heaven. I was unable to meet the owners but they were the nicest most helpful people over the phone. Secluded, Peaceful, and beautiful. If you love to hike and to explore you'll love this area.

unexpected fee for our dog

  • 2 of 5

We have rented here in the past and have brought our elderly, well behaved yellow lab. Upon our arrival this time we were informed that there would be a $15/night fee for our dog. No prior notice, have not seen any info on website saying a pet fee, no mention when we booked or when we paid our deposit. We we told that the $60 would cover cleaning.

Rita is a nice lady but we found this unacceptable. Paid the $60, but reluctantly since we really did not have much of a choice.

Owner's Response: I am unsure how to respond to this as this site clearly states there is a nightly pet fee for approved pets. I am unsure how to make it more clear that it is a nightly fee as VRBO does not have any way to change the cost listing. I am sorry for any confusion and for future renters with pets - we like to know in advance if you are bringing a pet and the listed fee is nightly.

Escape from the busy life

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I truly enjoyed this cabin. It was removed from the hustle of the tourist areas but yet close enough to them (make sense?). The cabin is very welcoming and well kept. The cabin had everything you need (full kitchen, deck, BBQ grill, towel, etc). I personally loved that fact your could go mountain biking/fishing right from the cabin. With no cell phone service or TV you actually can get your human batteries recharged here! My wife LOVED the claw foot tub and I loved the Osprey nest down at the bottom of the hill. What a great place and location.
