About this property

Private Lakefront Home on Peninsula of Pristine Big Bass Lake

During summer months (June through August), we rent for full weeks only, with a changeover day of Saturday. No exceptions are made.

Pauls’ Guesthouse is a fully-renovated and newly furnished 1980’s split level home situated on pristine Big Bass Lake, approximately six miles north of Outing, MN in southeastern Cass County (approximately 150 miles or three hours north of the Twin Cities). Bass Lake is a stunning mid-sized lake, with amazing 20-foot water clarity; it consists of three main bays with virtually all shoreline being fully natural with mature white and red pines reaching down to water’s edge. The lake has public access and is perfect for pontooning and fishing. The Guesthouse sits on 2.5 acres and is located across the mid-section of the lake’s main peninsula; it is a private setting with no sightlines to surrounding cabins.

The location is ideal – the Guesthouse is situated in Land O’ Lakes State Forest with immediate access to snowmobile trails in the winter and ATV trails during the remainder of the year. The trail system offers routes to bars and restaurants in nearby towns including Emily, Outing, Remer and Longville.

The Guesthouse accommodates six people. It has three bedrooms and a large bathroom with walk-in shower on the upper level. Two bedrooms have queen-sized beds and the third has two twin beds; all are nicely appointed. The lower level consists of the kitchen, living room, dining room, laundry facility, half bath, and there is access to the attached garage. The Guesthouse was completely renovated in 2011 and all appliances and furnishings are new. This is a non-smoking facility. Pets will be considered on a case-by-case basis; no puppies allowed. We do not allow cats.

Amenities include a gas-fired potbellied stove in the living room, central air conditioning, dual hot water tanks, phone, wireless Internet, flat-screened TV with a full range of cable and local channels, screened porch with picnic table, propane BBQ grill, fire pit with lounge chairs, and a 16’ dock. The Guesthouse’s kitchen is fully furnished for all of your cooking needs.

For your convenience, Olds Lift & Dock Service of Outing rents pontoons, fishing boats and speed boats. Rentals range from daily to weekly and they’ll deliver the boat to the dock prior to your arrival. Also, there are several favorite local restaurants to sample: The Deer Haven Supper Club (great for walleye and ribs), The Pickled Loon near Outing (full bar and menu) and Red Pine Cookhouse in Emily (great Asian fare). Shop the shops and boutiques in nearby Crosby, Longville, Emily, Crosslake, Pequot Lakes and Nisswa; all are located within an hour of the Guesthouse.

About the host

Hosted by Paul Kirkman

Host profile image
I had been traveling to north central Minnesota for approximately 15 years and have fallen in love with this area because of it's exquisite beauty and the variety activities one can enjoy. In 2006, I purchased the peninsula of Big Bass Lake and ultimately made it my permanent residence in 2012. I own Itasca Leathergoods, a company that handcrafts moccasins, handbags, belts and other leather goods in Lake George, Minnesota. I also own Victual, a specialty foods store in Crosby, Minnesota, that sells house-made ice cream (full dairy and lactose-free), artisan cheeses, charcuterie, packaged gourmet, gifts, and a well-curated off-sale liquor store. My partner, also named Paul, works as an IT director of a small software development company.

Why they chose this property

The Guesthouse is originally the caretaker's house for the main property. It is the perfect get-away. Accessing the Guesthouse is easy via main highways and county roads and is located approximately 150 miles north of the Twin Cities with a travel distance by car of about three hours.

The setting is ideal -- we're located on a medium-sized lake and the Guesthouse's location on the peninsual offers stunning lake views and complete privacy. The lake itself is gorgeous with natural shorelines and mature white and red pine trees coming down to water's edge.

Come here to relax and get away from urban life. You'll be surrounded by peace and quiet, as well as natural beauty. We're adjacent to Land O' Lakes State Forest which has some of the state's best snowmobile trails, and we're also adjacent to the Moose River Trail system for ATV trails. Also, we're within a short drive of the ever-popular Cuyuna Range Mountain Bike Trails, and we're close to cross country ski trails and golf courses.

What makes this property unique

My favorite thing about the Guesthouse's location is the variety of activities at your disposal. If you're looking for calmness and serenity, the lake environment is quiet enough that you'll hear the wind wispering through the pines and the loons calling. If you're looking for snowmobiling or ATV trails, access to the state's main trail system is nearby and accessible directly from the cabin. If you're looking for antiquing or shopping, destinations including Crosby, Crosslake, Nisswa and Pequot Lakes are all within about an hour of the Guesthouse.
