This is a life-long dream of mine to build a cabin in one of the prettiest places in Colorado!
Marble is a very historic town located 60 miles from Aspen in the Crystal River Valley. It is a beautiful 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Aspen to the cabin in the summer.
It is a place that offers backcountry skiing, fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, etc. and the best panoramic mountain views Colorado has to offer!
I own a fly fishing guide service in Aspen www.aspentroutguides.com and have brought many of my clients to my cabin over the years.
Most people really enjoy the quiet nature of of the valley and how relaxing it is to spend time in the mountains. There is a hiking trail, Carbonate Creek trail at the bottom of the driveway that takes you up a beautiful valley full of wildflowers and fabulous views.
If you have a 4WD vehichle you can go up Lead King Basin and take the Geneva Lake trail to a beautiful lake. I have two canoes at Beaver Lake which is 2.5 miles from the cabin and it offers some great fishing. There is a nice restaurant in Marble called the Slow Groovin' Cafe which is open in the summer. You can also visit the artsy, historic town of Redstone which has some nice art galleries and a few restaurants. Carbondale is a 30 mile drive from the cabin and offers some fine dining and shopping. I suggest shopping for food at Whole Foods which is 10 minutes from Carbondale in El Jebel.
My wife owns Bonnie's Restaurant on Aspen Mountain and is a private chef in the summer, we have a beautiful daughter, Annika who loves skiing and mountain biking.
We often take our fishing/ horse back riding guests to the cabin and she will prepare meals for the outing.
My permit in the White River National Forest allows me to take clients to some high lakes where we do overnight camping trips.
My favorite is Geneva Lake which is a one hour four-wheel drive ride from the cabin along with a hour hike to the lake.
It is fabulous in the summer for people who enjoy hiking for the scenery and looking for wildlife and the flowers are incredible!

Scott Nichols purchased this Cabin in 94
Why Scott Nichols chose Carbondale
I chose this property due to the beauty of the area and liked the idea of having a cabin escape from Aspen!
What makes this Cabin unique
It is the most relaxing environment I have been able to find in in all my travels! You have the ability to go for a strenouous ski, hike, bike etc. in one moment and then come back to the cabin and relax and read a book in front of the fire the next!
Sports & Adventure Activities
My husband and I are from Asheville, NC and were visiting family in Aspen for a few days. We decided at the last minute to try to find a cabin to get away from it all. Scott's place was the perfect setting. We loved every bit of it and were lucky enough to be in the midst of a brilliant fall weekend with the Aspen trees in full glory. The cabin is just delightful and though we all say it too much, "pictures don't do it justice" it was true here - it's better in reality. The kitchen is tiny but well stocked with cookware. Take note when he mentions it's "off grid" and don't be expecting to be able to get on your cell phone or on the internet. THAT was exactly what we were looking for and it was heaven. The beds were comfortable, the couches amazing and there are no words to describe the star gazing. The overview description on VRBO is exactly what you will find, so read through it first. If you want to ditch the outside world for awhile, this is the place!
Best Place in Colorado!!
Personally, this was my second time visiting the cabin. This time it was for a very small gathering on an off-the-grid bachelor party with my best friends. Having been to the cabin previously, I knew exactly what to expect. My friends however were blown away and couldn't believe the views and hiking from this cabin! The previous time I had visited was in March, this time visiting in late September. We had the most beautiful 70 degree day to start the long weekend, followed by two days of early morning snowfall and 40 degree afternoons. Beautiful!
Honestly, the views are what make this property so amazing. We spent our time hiking, playing poker, ping pong, and pool while enjoying home cooked meals, adult beverages, and much needed time relaxing to the sounds of the mountainside (and the surround sound of course). I'm sure there are amazing things to do within the Marble area, but once we reached the cabin we found our paradise and had no reason to leave. My buddies have already decided this will be a bi-annual or annual trip. The cabin is ready to be enjoyed upon arrival, and I highly encourage anyone to visit this cabin! Perfect set up for sure, I could honestly be very happy living in this location. Thanks again for an amazing trip and can't wait until the next time!
I have to give a big "thank you" to Scott! My girlfriend, her sister, a best friend, and I stayed in the cabin. Beautiful cabin, amazing views, great communication, completely set up to enjoy upon our arrival! We were seeking a nice little getaway from technology and our daily grind, and we found just that. Hiking trails within easy walking distance gave us an amazing day of enjoying the Rocky Mountains at their finest. And the pictures don't even do this cabin justice. We spent most of our time relaxing on the front deck (mid 50's during the day) or cuddled up by the wood burning stove at night while watching movies or playing card games. And the stars! Such a change of scenery from our quiet nights in Kansas City. A bit of a drive from Denver, but the drive through the mountains just added to the experience for us. And I very much appreciated Scott telling us what cookware would be provided, where to do our shopping, and how to operate all of the equipment if necessary (and it wasn't necessary). Bring a case of your favorite beer, hook up an iPhone playlist to the amazing indoor/outdoor surround sound, and just relax on the deck with friends or family. You won't be disappointed. Our trip was in March, we ran into some deep snow on the hike, had no troubles getting to the cabin. We will definitely rent this cabin again (and I will improve my ping pong game beforehand!!).
We enjoyed this cabin - Scott was great communicating with us. It was roomy and comfortable. The BBQ in Marble is awesome and great atmosphere. This cabin is LITERALLY at the end of the road - but what a beautiful view from the deck! Truly a great place to hike, fish, and get away from it all
Wow!!!!! Breathtaking Beauty in Every Direction!!!
From the first inquiry, our host went out of his way to make sure everything about our much-needed, vacation was perfect Upon arrival, after a 15 hour drive, it was nice to have the house open and ready for move in. Our adventure started with a short hike up the Carbonate Creek trail directly from the cabin driveway. The creek was flowing strong which made for some great photos and a nice picnic. Later in the day we took the drive into Aspen for the “rainy” Jazz Festival. Though, we elected not to sit in the concert in the rain, we still enjoyed a great burger and some shopping in town.
On Saturday, we took the Jeep out on the 4-wheel drive road, Lead King Basin. And, yes, they do mean it when they say 4-wheel drive only. The six mile drive to the Geneva Lake parking area took over an hour. And, despite some harrowing bumps that forced this writer to get out and walk, the road was exciting and the views breathtaking in every direction. The hike up to Geneva Lake is not to be missed. After a nice lunch, a short hike back to the car (while watching the rain clouds gather) and another harrowing trip back up the Jeep road, we meandered into town for beer and BBQ at the Slow Groovin’. The owners were delightful and seemed to have the only ESPN connection in town.
Other adventures while we were there included a 10 mile hike, up the jeep road to the Crystal Mill and the town of Crystal. The Crystal Mill was dilapidatingly beautiful and all together fascinating. A mountain bike ride in Carbondale (which also allowed us to check email and voicemail), lunch at the Redstone Inn (the best burger in the area) and a drive up Old Marble Mill Road rounded out the trip.
The cabin itself has all the comforts of home. At the owner’s recommendation, we made a stop at the Whole Foods in El Jebel and had our provisions for the week. Bacon and eggs at sunrise started each day for us....we actually looked forward to the morning rooster crowing, something we city folk don’t hear too often. Grilling on the patio with a cold beer and a million stars was a highlight and a night of skillet lasagna (no cook noodles) also turned out great. When we weren’t playing ping pong, we enjoyed evenings by candlelight, giving a generator a bit of the break and enjoying the owner’s fabulous music collection.
The cabin and the area made a home in my heart and I know we will be back there for another visit soon. Thanks for a perfect time!!!
We are happy they enjoyed the beauty and relaxing nature of the cabin!
Great Rental...Privacy and Beautiful Views!
I you are looking for complete privacy and beautiful views, this is the place! This cabin is "off the grid" and ideal for romantic couples or folks who want to escape it all (and we mean "all"...no internet, TV or cell service!). It's located at the top/end of the road, so ensures complete privacy. We enjoyed visiting the towns of Marble and Redstone (both have very interesting histories), hiking, BBQ-ing (GREAT BBQ), and eating outside on the large deck.
Scott, the owner, was most helpful with the reservation process, and always available to answer any questions. He had everything turned on and ready to go on our arrival.
We had a wonderful, relaxing week and look forward to our next visit!
We have two canoes on Beaver Lake and plenty of hiking, biking, fishing 4WD and fabulous scenery
Rates & Availability
Additional information about rental rates
The cabin is fairly rural and remote and is off the grid meaning it runs on a solar and generator chargable battery bank. The water is from the well and is delicious. The generator, stove, oven, water heater and fridge and freezer all are fueled by propane. The heat is suppled by a wood stove upstairs and a wood pellet stove downstairs. Winter renters need to be able to start and maintain a fire.
I prefer a cashiers check for 50% prior to arrival and the other 50% upon arrival
