The Honeycomb Retreat (Get-Away or Get-Together)

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

This cozy lake house was built by one of the original German Scientists who came to work in the space program with Werner Von Braun in the 1950's. A group of them built houses in this quiet cove of Lake Guntersville because it reminded them of their mountainous native land. They were known to spend hours working in their beautifully landscaped yards and then gather in the late afternoon to swim or float on rafts and visit with friends and neighbors in the quiet lake setting.

The house is perfect for accommodating a family who enjoys being together and entertaining friends of all ages. It is great for a family gathering because it has many open spaces for gathering inside and outdoors and plenty of comfortable beds. Great private boathouse (built in 2003) and party dock great for swimming, fishing or even star gazing. Nice flat manicured yard with jungle gym and rope swing for kids, ideal for backyard football.

The boathouse has one boat slip available plus one jet ski slip. The porch is covered and has an expansive view of the yard and lake. It is well protected even during rainy weather and in fact is very comfortable to sit and watch a storm blow by. The water is eight feet deep at the dock with a gradual slope to the shore making it perfect for swimming.

There is a large comfortable room for gathering around the fireplace in colder months, and a separate room for piling up and watching TV or movies. There is also a downstairs playroom/bunkroom for the kids with a separate TV. This abundance of living spaces make this a comfortable stay no matter your style of relaxation.

Lake Guntersville is world famous for its bass fishing. We have pulled in 5 pound bass right off the dock. Honeycomb is about eight miles west of the town Guntersville, and 20 minutes from Huntsville city limits. A public access boat launch is conveniently

located one mile from the house.

Bed configuration: Bedroom #one, King-size bed. Bedroom #two, King-size bed. Bedroom/sleeping porch #three, twin-size bunk bed plus one single. Bunkroom/playroom #4, 2 single beds and twin-size bunk bed.

Wonderful lake house with tons of character

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay. The house is large, sleeps lots of folks comfortably, has a large kitchen, multiple living spaces and this big beautiful wood burning fireplace. The view, the dock, the boathouse with lifts, and the stone pond structure in the back yard - it was just perfect. The place spoke to me, and I would love to go back someday soon when the weather is warmer.

Property managers were responsive and helpful. I would give this place six stars if I could.

House was clean and exactly what we needed for this trip.

  • 5 of 5

Everything was great, my only suggestion would be to put rugs inside the exterior doors to stop a little more dirt from coming in. Other than that we were as comfy as we could be. Thanks for making everything so simple. 😊

plenty of space, nice deck but not for luxury

  • 3 of 5

We just got done spending 4 nights and 3 days at the Honeycomb Retreat. We are a family of 8 and Both parties drove for 6-7 hours to meet up and enjoy family time that is stress-free and comfortable. So we look for a place that fits us and has all our needs and wants,as they should for the amount of $ we end up spending. We are there to have good memories not spend time getting upset or stressed out. This was not the case this go around, but we rolled with it and made the best out of it that we could. I will start off with the Postives. **Online Booking was easy. Jim,the owner, was responsive very quickly. Paul and Maria, the property managers, were very nice, when we arrived had to try calling them because her phone got left at the house.(By the way the phone # provided for the managers was not the right one, they happened to just show up as I kept calling the wrong one and I have to add that guy is NOT happy that his number keeps getting used and he let me know it lol,so I'd recommend making sure that it's switched to the correct one) but managers were nice and gave me their correct #'s to call if we have any problems. The house has plenty of space for large families. The deck is awesome! Fishing caught a lot of little ones.Kids had a blast swimming! (Watch for snakes we saw a lot!) Ac works great! There's grassy area in the back yard that was perfect to play washers on. Now for the Negatives* Both Queen beds are broken, sleep for the adults wasn't fun;appliances in the kitchen are old and suck;coffee maker broke 2nd day had to go buy one;the stove burns everything watch carefully;the fridge(small) didn't keep cold, leaked water;small charcoal grill outside;Bring your own pots/pans/dishes if you plan on cooking in kitchen! There's a small skillet and a small wok pan and they suck! Most glassware is broken/chips in the glass and Be careful in the kitchen the wooded floor is not connected and the pieces move while you walk. There's a lot of things that don't make sense in this house that's suppose to sleep 12 people. All things there should accommodate accordingly.Very disappointed for the amount of money we paid for 4nights/3days. This is an old house, one of the reasons it intrigued us to renting it,but it needs plenty of updates and it's not worth the priced charged at all. Unless a lot of things changed with this property, I would not recommend this place for a nice relaxing family vacation. I'm giving this 3 stars just because of the deck! Thanks

Very large space with character

  • 5 of 5

Huge space and loved the house's character. Having the dock and boat house available was perfect for spontaneous swimming or fishing. Plenty of kitchen amenities and having laundry available was very helpful.

Nice place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I and our family stayed in this house for a week in June and we enjoyed staying here. It is an older home that has some neat architectural features. It was very clean and spacious, has a large back yard, and a nice dock and boat house. The owner was prompt in responding to our inquiry and the property managers were very friendly and helpful.
