This cozy lake house was built by one of the original German Scientists who came to work in the space program with Werner Von Braun in the 1950's. A group of them built houses in this quiet cove of Lake Guntersville because it reminded them of their mountainous native land. They were known to spend hours working in their beautifully landscaped yards and then gather in the late afternoon to swim or float on rafts and visit with friends and neighbors in the quiet lake setting.
The house is perfect for accommodating a family who enjoys being together and entertaining friends of all ages. It is great for a family gathering because it has many open spaces for gathering inside and outdoors and plenty of comfortable beds. Great private boathouse (built in 2003) and party dock great for swimming, fishing or even star gazing. Nice flat manicured yard with jungle gym and rope swing for kids, ideal for backyard football.
The boathouse has one boat slip available plus one jet ski slip. The porch is covered and has an expansive view of the yard and lake. It is well protected even during rainy weather and in fact is very comfortable to sit and watch a storm blow by. The water is eight feet deep at the dock with a gradual slope to the shore making it perfect for swimming.
There is a large comfortable room for gathering around the fireplace in colder months, and a separate room for piling up and watching TV or movies. There is also a downstairs playroom/bunkroom for the kids with a separate TV. This abundance of living spaces make this a comfortable stay no matter your style of relaxation.
Lake Guntersville is world famous for its bass fishing. We have pulled in 5 pound bass right off the dock. Honeycomb is about eight miles west of the town Guntersville, and 20 minutes from Huntsville city limits. A public access boat launch is conveniently
located one mile from the house.
Bed configuration: Bedroom #one, King-size bed. Bedroom #two, King-size bed. Bedroom/sleeping porch #three, twin-size bunk bed plus one single. Bunkroom/playroom #4, 2 single beds and twin-size bunk bed.
Visit Cathedral Caverns 12 minute drive
Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Hampton cove 15 minute drive. And great shopping down town Guntersville along with great resturants.
We really enjoyed our stay. The managers are a lovely couple who went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The house is arranged a bit strange as it looks like it has had several add ons. But all and all is very comfortable and has great views of the lake. It is very spacious.
Upon arrival to the home we realized the driveway was incredibly narrow. Backing up four trucks and trailers was impossible without using the yard across the street. The front yard was unkempt, making the place look seedy. Inside was ok, but the floor plan is a little odd. Appears to have been a small house that got added onto over and over again. There's windows on the wall that separates one of the master bedrooms and the living room offering little privacy. The living room must have been a porch previously. The kitchen is large but the cabinet knobs are decoratively mismatched and have little pieces of metal on them, one of which i sliced my finger on. The washer is in the hallway, the dryer is out in the garage and the pictures on this listing are old. The big white sofa is now outside on the porch and the love seat is in the garage. The L shaped replacement is nice and comfy though. The backyard is ok, but there's an odd pond that is stagnant and breeds mosquitoes. The structure atop the pond does not look structurally sound, like it will fall at any minute. Oh, and the stairs leading down into the basement haven't any handrails which makes it easy to fall. There are two bathrooms but the one off the kitchen smells like sewer gas. Sitting on the back porch to enjoy the view of the water would have been nice except for the fact that the house next door is being remodeled so all you hear is construction equipment all day long and way past dark. I know that's not the property owners fault, but it really killed any chance to enjoy being outside. On one night of our stay it got really cold out and we turned on the heater. The next morning all 5 of us woke up sick. The vents are filled with mold and we are having to take antibiotics and $115 worth of meds from CVS to feel any better. Overall, the stay wasn't bad, but the mold issue makes me feel extremely upset that I wasted so much money and all my vacation just to be made sick.
I never give five stars because I believe there is always room for improvement, but this is one of the best by far!! 4-3/4.
We stayed three nights with our parents and were very comfortable. One son lives near and brought his boat and stayed with us also.
Our parents were born in the thirtys, comfort and accessibility are essential. They stayed relaxed and loved the back porch. They caught the morning sun to start their day and evening shade to wind down.
The home is very open and large. Beds are in good shape and not one complaint of a bad mattress. Never a problem with bathrooms, plenty of hot water and towels. Kitchen was roomy and large dining table for family meal. Cozy Living room with plenty of seating to pile up and watch movie.
The dock area is one of the best in area! I personally spent most of my time here, I love the water! Sunshine and fishing, and we did catch fish from the dock, bass and bluegill.
The dock is well lit with lights on every corner and inside dockhouse. It was a tad messy, keeping in mind this is a rental property, with only a few minutes of organizing it was the hot spot for everyone. Table and chairs on deck. Also four reclining sun chairs, 2 inflatable floats, two set of water wings, and a mop and broom inside. Three lifts with powered garage doors, one for jet ski and step down tie-ups all around. The steps into the water were slick but with a little elbow grease the winter algae was removed providing easy access into and out of the water. The steps go down chest deep into water, just walk out and walk in.
Landscaped lawn had just been mowed. Some over growth of flower beds but not a problem. Trees and beds gave privacy. Large lot with play area for children.
Plenty of parking once in but driveway but entrance is narrow,, One thing, there is a knee high wall in drivway/parking area, be aware.
Overall, a great time had by all. The home sleeps 12 and we were about half that. We are older and like our space, But a younger group would not be crowded in this large home.
We also found a great place for home cooking, great food, thanks to our son. It's called "Galen's", Reasonably priced, good friendly service with daily specials around $8.00. Take a right outta Honeycomb, about four miles on left. Dont be afraid of all the cars, they get ya in and out. We had no wait.
We hope to return to Honeycomb Retreat!
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and family vacation! Due to the close location to Huntsville, family members were able to come and go during our stay. Loved being able to bring our dog along too!
The house was clean and comfortable with a nice family room with TV, large dining room, great open kitchen, 2 large bedrooms, 2 smaller bedrooms and a wonderful porch overlooking the water. The a/c worked great too! WiFi helped tremendously since cell phone signal was non-existent for AT&T (ok with Verizon). We were very comfortable!
Unfortunately, the outside was another matter. The grounds were in a sad state of disrepair. Shrubs and all flower beds were very overgrown and full of poison ivy. The image that shows the outdoor patio no longer has that view due to large bushes. The jungle gym was questionable due to protruding nails and splintered wood. The 2 ponds were stagnant and overgrown. All this to say what used to be a pristine yard (according to neighbors) now needs lots of TLC. Until such time, probably not the best place for small children.
The boathouse was good. Our wake board boat was too large for the inside lift, but we were able to use the covered outside without the lift (lift only rated for 2500#). Both would work great for fisherman. Great water for swimming and water sports right off the dock. Boat launch was very close on Highway 431 and on-water fuel was available nearby at Sunrise Marina-Honeycomb.
The rental manager was super nice and accommodating. She worked with us on a late departure and we certainly appreciated her flexibility.
Loved the front porch with ceiling fan and room for all to sit. Beautiful property with shaded areas at house, pier & boathouse was awesome!!! Plenty of parking for 5 cars and a boat trailer. House was plenty cold in fact too cold. Except for bedroom next to kitchen seemed to get hot from the sun in the window and door going outside but we just bought a small fan. Knobs on kitchen cabinets had some sharp edges but kitchen was well stocked with items.
Only sad part was our arrival time was the same time as the Lawn Care Person was there to cut the grass & blow everything:( Thought his timing could have been better planned. Basement bedroom needs a table to put suitcase or a rod to hang clothes. Rental Property person was VERY FRIENDLY and accommodating on the overflow of garbage left from the previous renters and gave us longer hours on departure day. We will go back!!!
Overall we were very pleased with the rental. We fished all day everyday with two boats so the boat house/slips were very important. Great outside property/location, however, driveway was a little bit tricky to navigate with a boat. The outside property could stand a good day or two of maintenance (i.e. shrubs trimmed, etc.). Older house that has been added to over the years but has been maintained. Could use some updating/TLC. Boat launch ramp is less than a mile from the house. No cell signal is a pain. With that being said, it is a great value for the money and we would certainly stay there again. Great for someone traveling with a pet or a group on a fishing trip.
