Why margaret walker chose East Side
We fell in love with this historic treasure and renovated it to preserve its roots. When we bought the house it needed a lot of love - it had gone to disarray, but after a lot of sweat and restoration magic, it is now a treasure. The original house was built pre1900. The rest of the house was added in the 30s. It used to be a ranch (cows, sheep, goats) and a pecan orchard. There have been whispers of it being a stagecoach stop, brothel and popular spot during prohibition. The ruin across the street is what's left of Berg's Mill. San Juan, the mission next door was built mid 1700s. The ambiance of our property is seductively peaceful - we are so glad the house can continue to enchant visitors!
What makes this House unique
We have a fountain and a pond - our kids love looking for frogs, or feeding the fish. The birding on and around our property is spectacular. In the wintertime, we love having fires in the fireplaces, especially the fireplace in the master bedroom. Our property is surrounded by national park land so we are very secluded.

Like staying at your favorite aunt's home...very welcoming and so many interesting things in the home and yard. Margaret was very responsive and easy to work with. Alfredo, the caretaker, brought us fresh eggs and veggies in the mornings. We rented bikes next door at the Mission...the bike path is well kept and goes to several of the Missions as well as downtown. Our group also took Uber several times into town or the airport. Try Big Bib Barbeque at nearby Stinson Airport for breakfast or lunch!
What a beautiful house and property!
We can't say enough about how much we love this house. It is obvious that Margaret has put a lot of care attention and love into making it perfect for her guests. It has immense character and lots of nooks and crannies to sit and read one of the many wonderful books she has. The yard was delightful for our kids and they especially loved the tree swing. Sights and attractions of San Antonio were close enough but frankly we enjoyed the house so much it was hard to leave. Up of that there are so many beautiful areas to bicycle around the house. There were so many special touches and we can't wait to come back . Thank you for everything.
The property is beautiful and the owners were lovely to work with. Definitely recommend staying here!
We always have a wonderful time when we vacation at this home! Love it!!!!
The property is beautiful and the home has everything you would ever need. The location is great. Our kids that range in age from 19-7 all have a good time. We have stayed at the property twice and truly enjoyed both times.
Beautiful and serene
The stay was amazing!
Lovely and relaxing
We loved our stay! The house was clean as a whistle and filled with interesting books and maps on San Antonio. Lots of tile and beautifully decorated. We used two of the bikes and rode down the mission trail(right outside the driveway). The Missions are beautiful. Loved watching the chickens and rooster as they pranced around the yard, and flew up into the trees and over the fence. Swing in the back yard was another favorite thing. Kitchen is well stocked and beds extremely comfortable. Stress melted away! We can't wait to return.!
