Why margaret walker chose Southside

We fell in love with this historic treasure and renovated it to preserve its roots. When we bought the house it needed a lot of love - it had gone to disarray, but after a lot of sweat and restoration magic, it is now a treasure. The original house was built pre1900. The rest of the house was added in the 30s. It used to be a ranch (cows, sheep, goats) and a pecan orchard. There have been whispers of it being a stagecoach stop, brothel and popular spot during prohibition. The ruin across the street is what's left of Berg's Mill. San Juan, the mission next door was built mid 1700s. The ambiance of our property is seductively peaceful - we are so glad the house can continue to enchant visitors!

What makes this house unique

We have a fountain and a pond - our kids love looking for frogs, or feeding the fish. The birding on and around our property is spectacular. In the wintertime, we love having fires in the fireplaces, especially the fireplace in the master bedroom. Our property is surrounded by national park land so we are very secluded.

This home in San Antonio is pure magic. Every corner of this thoughtfully appointed space is full of eclectic treasures from around the world. The effect is cozy, unique, and utterly charming. Even though we were a convenient 10 minutes to the heart of downtown San Antonio, we felt like we were in another world. My friends and I enjoyed an unforgettable weekend sipping wine under the trees, taking selfies with the friendly chickens who live on the grounds, and looking for shooting stars while enjoying the plunge pool. The kitchen is fit for a master chef, and the beds are soft and comfortable. I would recommend this home for anyone looking to escape for a relaxing weekend or reconnect with family or friends.

Lovely and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay! The house was clean as a whistle and filled with interesting books and maps on San Antonio. Lots of tile and beautifully decorated. We used two of the bikes and rode down the mission trail(right outside the driveway). The Missions are beautiful. Loved watching the chickens and rooster as they pranced around the yard, and flew up into the trees and over the fence. Swing in the back yard was another favorite thing. Kitchen is well stocked and beds extremely comfortable. Stress melted away! We can't wait to return.!

Lovely Home Convenient to Mission Trail

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is perfectly located as a base to enjoy the mission trail. The walking/biking trail allows for easy access to the missions, or if you prefer to drive, the location is equally convenient to do so. The property is perfectly kept and quiet. We look forward to visiting again.

Country feel without having to travel

  • 5 of 5

Born & reared in San Antonio I’ve been to many points of interest however this one is special. A ten minute drive from downtown takes you to an oasis of charm, comfort, beauty, and history.

The main house is nestled between the San Antonio river and Mission San Juan. It’s character describes the families close ties to San Antonio. Every eminity from the decked out kitchen to the sip n dip will put you at ease. Highly recommended for a vacation even if your from San Antonio.
