Ellen Gaddy purchased this house in 2000

Look at the pictures, it was not hard.

What makes this house unique

What could be better than watching the sun set on the ocean, and watching it from your own balcony.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Hiking the dunnes and beaches, close encouners with hawks, beautuful forrests. We live on the east coast on a small harbor in Downeast Maine and appreciate being able to see the other coast.

Cape House was a perfect family get away in a wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5

Our family (5 adults) stayed here in early Oct. Cape House is very comfortable, it really felt like "home" and not an impersonal hotel. Everything we needed was there. The location is awesome. :-) We loved the walk down the hill and over the dune to the beach. It was beautiful! There are trails that go from the house right up over the big dune and you can easily walk to the top or over and down to Cape Kawanda or the Pelican Brew Pup. The weather wasn't the best when we were there so we weren't able to use the outside features of the property but we wanted to! :-) The sunsets were magnificent. We would very much like to come back to Cape House. :-) For us, it was just about perfect. Plenty of room for everyone.

Ellen was GREAT to work with! She made the whole experience very easy and trouble free for us. Highly recommend!

Probably not recommended for disabled or those with very young children as the trek to the beach requires a little exertion!

Fabulous location for special event with friends!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful, warm vacation home. Easy to find in daylight. Very clean. Ellen the manager, answered all our question quickly and was very friendly in all our communications. The house is so comfortable and all the special touches, art work and local novelty items were great. The views and easy trail access were great amenities. The hike to the beach is a little challenging, great exercise and well worth the trip to access the dunes, the beach and over to the Pelican Brew Pub. One evening we had a very pleasant fire in the indoor fireplace. Loved the campfire/wood stove in the backyard for get together's while chatting and watching the parasailers catch the winds! Loved the concept of the wood stove with the chimney pipe for a fire pit, for anyone who has ever spent time around a campfire being chased by the smoke, this is a wonderful solution! We are now looking for an old wood stove to set up in our backyard! The kitchen was well supplied, handy appliances and a good selection of spices and condiments. We had a fabulous weekend at the house and plan to stay again. Highly recommend this home.

Pacific City Beach House

  • 3 of 5

The management company was wonderful to work with and we got all our info, directions, keys, deposits etc. without a hitch. In reading the reviews they seem to hold true. The house was nice, not fancy but is showing some wear. The basement does smell like a musty basement but we were on the main and upper floors and there is a door to close to contain the smell. The kitchen was well stocked and it's great to be able to cook our own food and have all the amenities of home. We had 6 people in the house and never felt like we were tripping over each other. The beach view is distant from the hill but beautiful. It was a bit cool when we were there so we did not take advantage of the outdoor sitting area with fire pit. It was a cozy area. The indoor fireplace was a hit!

The bedspread in the master bedroom was very worn but the bed was adequate, not great, not bad. It was quiet, peaceful, clean and tidy. Overall our stay was very enjoyable. There are lots of stairs, 3 stories. The walk to the beach was up and down 2 hills where the sand took you one step forward and two steps back. Luckily we are in shape and found it fun. Not something I'd do with young children etc. You can easily drive less than a half mile and literally drive onto the beach for super easy access.

Cape Kiwanda House.

  • 4 of 5

House was a great, scenic experience overall. The view of the Cape from the porch is priceless. Watching the sunset was definitely worth the moment. In Feb the Sunset lies perfectly between the trees and you can watch it set into the ocean.

We towed our 18ft boat down to go crabbing for one of the days. The driveway is big enough for the boat and has a ample space to back in and turn around as a 3 point turn with little trouble. Even with the SUV and boat parked in the driveway, there was still more parking for another truck and more.

The only thing I could call a con is the outdoor lighting had some burnt out bulbs so it was a little hard to see when I had to get to the car at night. Kitchen light switch was having issues as well. It is a dimmer type switch that was flashing/blinking the lights intermittently. I had left a note for the property management and hopefully they can get these resolved.

The trail to the beach and Cape are rather steep. No problem for my wife, dog and I but it is a huff! We still enjoyed having used this trail but I can see how others might not get to use it if they have health problems or really young kids.

Bottom line, we will be back! Very enjoyable!

Cape House is my "home away from home"!

  • 5 of 5

I have been to Cape House many times over the years and I must say that it never fails to impress me. As soon as you drive into the driveway you notice a well cared for house and property. It is very clean and tidy inside and out, and has all the amenities that you have at home and more. The view through the forest trees from the back of the house and decks to the ocean is stunning! A charming little patio with backyard fireplace and Adirondack chairs is perfect for weiner and marshmallow roasts.

Cape House has become my home away from home. After a day of hiking, beach activities, shopping, or whatever, I feel the same comfort wash over me as I "come home" as I do in arriving at my own home after a long day. I have noticed more signs for activities such horseback riding, hang gliding rides, etc. than I have in the past, too. A quick phone call does it...no searching. Pacific City is becoming more tourist friendly without losing the charm and appeal that brings people here in the first place. Restaurants are abundant and Cape House is located just a short distance accessible by road or beach to several of them. Be advised that while Cape House is close, the walk does involve some uphill areas that may be difficult for some people. That being said if you have a car they are just a minute away, and several more are just a couple of minutes away along with many of the shops, gas, groceries, and a variety of other small businesses. I can highly recommend Cape House for almost anybody without limited mobility (lots of stairs). I, myself, keep coming back over and over again!.

Comfy retreat, but could use a few upgrades

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this house with our family, but I felt that I should mention a few things that I would have liked to know...

We have stayed at about 10 different rentals in Pacific City (we love it there!), but it was definitely a new experience to stay up on the cliff where this is house is. There are ocean views from the house for sure and the deck upstairs is quite lovely, however I think it is a bit of a stretch to call this house "oceanfront'. We had two young children and grandma with us, and only 1 of the 3 could make the climb from the beach back up to the house. There is a lovely path through the forest to the top of the dune, but the sandy path down to the beach from there is steep and not practical for young kids or anyone without good physical fitness. We have stayed in oceanfront properties before, and the beach access from this house was significantly more challenging than we expected. Giving a piggyback to a 3 year old up that dune was something you might only try once!

We definitely loved the open layout of the house. The living area/kitchen were so comfortable and access to the porch and trail was perfect. There is a great puzzle table and the lighting was lovely! The one down side to the open layout was that sound travels very well and nap time was a bit of a challenge because of that.

The nightly cost is lower than the rentals down near the beach where we have stayed before, and the trade off is that you have a good hike down to the beach (and back up!). However, I think there a couple of areas that could be improved to make this trade off worth it:

1) address the musty smell in the basement. I was the only person who could stand to go down stairs to the rec room/laundry area. Everyone else was grossed out by the strong mildew smell.

2) upgrade the bed linens and pillows. The pillows especially felt old and a little 'crunchy'

3) augment the dishes. We were only 6 people and we had to run the dishwasher after every meal.

4) reduce the amount of breakables and 'nicknacks' throughout the house. It feels a bit like going to grandma's house, complete with old pictures of cats and grandkids on the fridge! My children loved running through the house opening every drawer and rearranging the nicknack collections (seashells, glass beads, goggles, etc). The off limits toy car collection also required added policing that would have been nice to avoid.

Again, we enjoyed our week here! A few improvements would be lovely though!
