Overview

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-9)

The Sea Turtle cottage is located in the heart of exciting Gulfport within walking distance to the beach, parks, casino and Historic Downtown Gulfport's restaurants, shops and bars. The Sea Turtle is on the Mississippi Department of Archives and History covenant register and has been carefully restored to the charms of yesteryear. If you enjoy the ambiance of 'days gone by, then the Sea Turtle Cottage with its original hardwood floors, tongue and groove ceilings and comfortable and eclectic antique furnishings is the place for you!

Sleeping accommodations are great. The parlor bedroom features a four poster bed, antique chifforobe trestle table and flat screen TV. An antique full size burl maple bed with matching armoire and an antique single brass bed in the second bedroom is just perfect for the aunts and nieces. A French Provincial queen bed and trundle day bed in a third bedroom with it's nautical touches is seaside cottage chique.

Dining and entertaining for large groups is artfully easy. The graceful dining room table has two leafs for expanding to easily accommodate parties of ten. The kitchen is equipped with all the tools you'll need to make fabulous meals to wine and dine with friends and family.

Relax in the parlor living room where you and your musical guests and friends can have a fun night playing the spinet piano or guitar. Or gather in the sunroom where you will find a rattan love seat, two upholstered chairs and plenty of pillows and places to flop to watch your favorite shows or DVDs on the flat screen TV.

Two full baths make it easy to get up and get going. One bath includes a bathtub and shower combination that is great for the little guys.

This is a perfect vacation spot for family gatherings, and casino goers alike. The kids will love the splash pad at West Side Park located just a stroll around the block. And Jones Park with its scheduled entertainment events, (Gulfport Music Fest in May and the Fishing Rodeo returns July 4th weekend!), and picnic areas and playgrounds is so close you can walk to it. The newly constructed Gulfport Harbor will delight you with fishing piers and the offerings of fresh fish and shrimp from the boats (summer 2013). Or in season, take a ride on the Ship Island Excursion Boat leaving from the harbor to tour Historic Fort Massachusetts and leave you to do some 'barrier island' beach combing. The Beach Comber Trolley stops at Jones Park, ready to pick you up and carry you up and down the coast for even more shopping and dining fun. Even golfing! And the Island View Casino is a good neighbor living just across the street ready and waiting for whenever you're feeling lucky! Get in the car and you’ll find more fun with outlet malls, discount stores, golf courses and the Gulf Island Water Park.

Come and stay and play at the Sea Turtle Cottage. I just know you will make some great memories.

About Beth Swigris

My family and I have lived on this street just a few houses up from the Sea Turtle Cottage for 20 years. Our home was lucky enough to survive the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, but many other homes in our community were not so lucky. It is the love for the coast and the desire to help restore and rebuild our community that brought us to purchase the Sea Turtle Cottage. Thanks to the partnership between my mother and me, we were able to complete the restoration of this charming cottage and offer a delightful place for friends and families to vacation and gather in this exciting town.

I hope we can share our pleasures of the coast with you, our quests, for many years to come and that you will return time and time again.

Owners, Beth Swigris and Martha Sexton

Great house right near everything

  • 5 of 5

Beth was wonderful, and got back to us very quickly. We had to do some cleaning when we first arrived, but Beth promised to review things with her cleaning person. Great yard and stocked kitchen. Easy walk to restaurants and the beach. We used the gas grill, which was a great bonus. Plenty of room to have guests in.

Cozy, Quirky, Comfortable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Sea Turtle Cottage! The house is light, bright, and there was more than enough room for a family with two teenagers. I spent lots of time reading on the front porch, and we watched movies together in the evening in the sun room. The walk to the beach is really simple, and if you'd rather drive than haul your stuff, there is ample parking. It was also a pleasant walk downtown for a latte each morning. Beth has really worked to make this cottage just what you need on vacation--a nicely stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, plenty of towels, good showers. Don't be put off by the lack of view--it's a lovely, quiet neighborhood, and the breeze off the gulf will more than make up for being off the water. We would come back to stay at this cottage in a heartbeat!

Cozy and Comfortable Cottage!!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at the Sea Turtle this vacation! We had more than enough space for our family of 4 and really appreciated being able to bring our dog along as well. It was clean and the decor made you feel right at home as soon as you stepped through the door. We loved all of the antique furniture, the decorative 'beach' touches throughout, and the piano which we had fun playing every day. It was stocked with everything we needed for our week.

The area was great. We spent many days on the beach in Gulfport and Long Beach. We drove to the beach every day, though it would not have been a bad walk at all. It was hot and we had a lot of stuff to take and with plenty of parking it didn't make sense to lug it all when we could just drive and park where we wanted. The best beach was Ship Island. The ferry ride was fun, the beach was beautiful, and the water was clearer than the other beaches we were on. We searched for shells and it was fun to watch the blue crabs scurry away as you walked up to them as we had never seen anything like that before. Would recommend just renting the umbrellas and chairs they have there as it's a little walk to the beach from the pier where you're let off.

Tony's Brick Oven Pizzeria was excellent downtown and we appreciated the gift certificate Beth left for us when we got there. That was very thoughtful and was a nice treat after a long drive to get there! We also ate at Steve's Marina Restaurant one night (really good and sat outside on the balcony) and Shaggy's (sat on the balcony-fun, but we weren't as crazy about the food here..) We visited the Gulfport outlet mall one day and Beauvoir (Jefferson Davis' home) and the Katrina Memorial; both in Biloxi. New Orleans was a little over an hour away so that made for a fun and enjoyable day trip. I have always wanted to go there and it did not disappoint; food, music, shopping, and people. All in all, this trip was fantastic and there were so many different things to do and see.

And lastly, if you go, get up early and do not miss the sunrises' at Gulfport Harbor. They are beautiful and what a way to start the day........ No regrets! We would stay here again if we ever get back to the area. Thanks for creating such a relaxing and comfy space, Beth!

Cozy and Quaint - Felt like Home

  • 5 of 5

This was such a cute property. I loved the decor. Very eclectic. This property housed 4 adults and 4 children very comfortably. We enjoyed the front porch, the back deck, and the accommodating dinner table which seated us all. The Gulf was a 3 block walk, there is a casino across the street, and was a quite neighborhood. Thanks Beth!

Adorable house with all the essentials

  • 5 of 5

Great little house in a perfect location for a beach getaway. The house is adorable inside, decorated in a shabby-chic beach theme with plenty of space for our 4 families (10 people total) to hang out, cook and relax. The host has gone to great lengths to make sure everything you'll need is there - toilet paper, plates, utensils, spices for cooking, mini toiletries, hair dryers, laundry essentials, board games, books and movies. There is wifi powerful enough for tons of devices, but we weren't able to stream Netflix on the TV with the device we brought, so bring DVDs for the kids instead. Also helpful to know, one of the bathrooms is between two bedrooms - which could be tricky with late sleepers or napping babies - so having the second bathroom in the back was really great. Overall we are very very happy with our stay and plan to return to Gulfport again next summer! Thanks, Beth!
